Powertubes(el34, 6l6s, el84,6v6) not unless your amp is capable of handling different power tubes or you get some sort of modification done to your amplifier. Even if the amplifier is capable it would need to be re-biased and such
That was one o the best amp demos i've ever seen on YouTube, wonderful playing man. What are you playing from 1:00 to 1:20 and from 4:05 to the end? plllleaaase!!! i have to know.
@hendrixgeek The tube is made by Groove Tubes, but I'm told the older vintage ones, if you can get them, are even better sounding. It cost about 20 bucks new.
@lesyellowcabs Sorry to get back so late, they are, believe it or not, stock Fender Indonesian lower end pickups that came with the guitar. I've since put 57 62 pickups in it which are great !!
hay man, i have just got a 63 Vibroverb with 2 x10'' jensen speakers i have re-valved it with the 5751 and with GT 6L6GC Tubes as well as re-biased to be safe and it still don't sound like yours
@LukeCathanDoherty Dude, thats a completely different amp - different circuit, different power stage, different everything. it will never sound like this one, ever.
I have a vibroverb 64 reissue love the amp loud as hell though, im using the attenuator otherwise nobody else could stand the volume. also a maxon compressor and zendrive 2 the best overdrive i have. among many. did you have to re bias the amp and what preamp tube did you replace there are several i believe? Nice playin too thanks
Is the Stock Speaker Faithful? I mean, is it decent or a Dud? I was thinking about the JBL...Can you give me any insight on the Vibroverb...I just ordered a New One In the Box..I GOT LUCKY!
I don't use the stock speaker, I put a vintage Jensen in it instead, they came with these or JBL's when new from what I'm told. It sounds good , just way too loud. My favorite amp to use now is the Fender Pro jr., small and loud too.
Killer tone btw and awesome chops! You got the SRV thing down pretty nicely....true pleasure to listen to! Yeah this amp is crazy LOUD though. I've got a couple of Analogman modded TS9/808's I use with the VV but the breakup isn't the same as the amp being pushed by itself. I could never get that tone with an attenuator either. I was thinking you must have biased the tubes hot to get an earlier breakup without all the volume because at 8 my amp is still super loud and squeaky clean.
Any idea how this amp was biased? Had to be super hot. I have the exact same amp with a JBL D130F. I removed V1 and placed an RCA 5751 in V2 and its still incredibly LOUD! I'm hoping there's a way to lower the headroom in this amp and breakup like it does in the video around 4-5 as opposed to 6-8 as mentioned without having to use an attenuator.
I don't know about the bias, I put the 5751 in the V1 spot with a 12ax7 in V2 in the video, and as I point out in the video, it is REALLY loud. In fact, I can't really play out with this setup unless I use a tube screamer and lower the volume, I get told to turn down. It sounds good with a tube screamer too.
sounds great !!! I have a vibro but the tubes are dull where do you have the volume @ I live in an apartment and I use a mxr ocd to keep er close to the floor don't want to blow thye doors off
Just to mention after watching your video, and looking for relevant informations on several sites, I swapped the V1 & V2 Ecc83's in my HotRod Deluxe with Ecc81's(or 12AT7's), and this is an incredible, non-destructive and easy-to-make improvement to smooth out the "Drive" Channel.
Instead of a far too aggressive and definition-lacking tone, you get much more clarity, while remaining overdriven enough (to my tastes of course).
How can I make an original '64 Vibroverb breakup at lower volume? Will that tube mod and tube removal work? I'll check the web but like your answers to previous questions. 5 Stars on your video.
Yes, this tube mod will work, it is reportedly what SRV did with his. To answer your question about breaking up earlier, I would take out the first preamp tube and leave it out, and use Groove tube 12ax7M in the second position all by itself. You will love the tone you get, let me tell you.
I was looking at the vibroverb custom because there's one at my local store for about 1800 USD, which is a decent markdown from the MF price. Do you know how this compares to other amps in it's price range? have you compared it next to an original blackface?
I'm asking because if I am dropping that much cash on an amp, I want to make sure it's a darn fine one.
Thanks - You know, that's a good price for this amp. I think that you really have to want this tone to buy this amp, it doesnt' have a lot of versatility, and its VERY LOUD. That said, if you tweak it like I did with tubes and such, you might get the tone you are looking for. The guitar in the video is a 99 dollar Squire import, pickups and all. I put the Fender 57 62 pickups in that guitar and the new tone is unbelieveable now, really good sounding.
Oh, and I love the tone you're getting too. It's very SRV-ish. Not perfect, but it has that mojo going on. I have a peavey classic (or, I may get a ceriatone trainwreck or marshall clone if I sell it) for crunchier/british tones.
Plus, I have some bareknuckles on my strat, and it'll probably sound even better.
And i'm used to loud, my peavey classic 50 410 is incredibly loud.
Thanks alot. You know I think the 5751 tube substitutions will work in your amp too if you want to try them out, do a websearch of Fender blackface tube stuff and you'll find a lot of information about what changes you can make.
I had the volume on about 7 or 8, the treble on 7, no bass, there is no middle tone knob on this amp. No Diaz modification on, just the stock Vibroverb setup with a 5751 tube in the preamp. Without this tube, the tone is terrible, very, very harsh and shrill.
You know I've never even seen a regular vibroverb, so I'm not sure. I have read that the 5751 trick came from articles about Stevie Ray's mods. I know that the Reissue I have has a unique sound for a Fender amp, it doesn't sound like any other I've played, Bassman, Super etc.
Awesome tone. What do you have the volume at on your amp? Also, would it be at all effective putting a 5751 in my Fender Hot Rod Deville? Does it make quite a substantial difference in tone?
Thanks for the comments. Yes, it will make a huge difference in tone if you change to the 5751 tube in the first tube position. I'm not sure if the HR Deville is the same as fender blackface circuits, I think it is but check with an amp tech at a music store before changing anything. The volume in the video is on 7 or 8 without the Diaz mod circuit.
Thanks alot !! I turn 55 years old tomorrow, I got my first guitar exactly 40 years ago on my birthday and have enjoyed playing ever since. Still chasing the elusive tone and blues styles of my heros, Albert King, SRV, Freddie King.
Believe it or not this is a 99 dollar Indonesian import strat with stock pickups. I have since replaced them with Fender 57 62 reissue pickups, MAN what a difference. I would highly recommend them for a strat.
Thanks for the compliments - Yes, this is the Diaz equipped reissue, I don't use the Diaz mods though. It sounds a little dirtier and a whole lot louder if you do use the Diaz mod.
Sounds nice, the tone and sound you are getting is to die for. What pedals are you going through? what guitar and pickups are you using and string size? how is the amp setup? volume..treble..etc. You Rock Sir.
Thanks for comments. Believe it or not, there is no pedal in use , the amp is on about 7 or 8 and is just distorting from the guitar signal (very loud though) The guitar is (no joke) a 99 dollar Fender Indonesian Squire import, pickups and all. I put a Warmoth neck on it with bigger frets. The tone is on 6, no bass, no reverb. I did raise the pickups closer to the strings to make it sustain without a pedal.
You make a very good point. Lets cut to the chase on guitars - find one you like, get the pickups, kneck and frets that you prefer and you are set. I did this with a cheap washburn, replaced the kneck, put in jumbo frets and Texas special pickups - what a screamer it is through a 62 Ampeg ReverbRocket
Either way is an option - putting the 5751 in V1 calms the amp down a little bit, putting ONLY the 5751 in V2 and leaving V1 empty significantly reduces the volume of the amp. To add to the confusion (I hope not) you can put a 12AX7 in V2 by itself as well. This last option gives a good balance of volume and breakup for use without a pedal of some sort.
Wow, great tone and even better playing. Might be the best I've heard. I have been on the fence for some time about this amp. Please tell me, is it really worth it? I mean REALLY worth it?? Your comments are greatly appreciated.
You know, this is a great question that you emphasize. Even though I've tried to make this amp have the tone I'm looking for, I would have to say NO it's not worth what it costs. I bought this one on Ebay a little cheaper, but I just don't think it is worth what it costs.
In my opinion, a far better amp for tone is the Fender Pro jr. (Yes, thats right) For the money, you can't beat the tone on that little amp. I will post a review of the Pro Jr. soon.
You have an original !! Awesome - what speaker do you have in it? I have a Vintage Jensen in my reissue, I'm thinking that the JBL would be better, or a Weber California. Is your amp all original?
Thanks alot. I had the amp volume on about 8 without the Diaz mod switch in this video. Since this was filmed I removed the first preamp tube V1 and only run the 5751 tube in the V2 second position, much nicer tone, and not as loud.
Thanks for the kind words. I hoped to share with others what I've learned about this amp that may help them get the tone they are looking for, I'm not sure it does it as it comes from Fender.
You know, I haven't used the mod features on my Vibroverb lately, I use the stock settings for the channels and the tube rectifier as well. It does get much louder with both mods turned on, so I've been moving away from that to try to find a lower volume, less brittle tone for playing in smaller clubs with it.
can you tell me more about these tube replacements? how many do you buy, and where, and now do you go about installing them? replace all? or what? I would appreciate it.
You can learn a great deal about these tube substitutions on the web by doing a search on "fender blackface tubes". Most fender amps use a similar tube setup which can use different tubes. A music store with a good technician can help you as well. The 5751 tube takes the place of the #1 12AX7 tube and reduces the gain in the preamp system, making a sweeter, less biting tone from the Fender amp.
There are other tubes and tube combinations you can try, the web has lots of information.
I appreciate your comments. I wanted to add that you can take the #1 preamp tube completely out in most Fender blackface amps and use it, it reallys cuts down on the power and volume the amp has to make it a little "tamer". When used with a good pedal, like a tube screamer, this setup is really nice for small club type playing, not too loud.
Thanks for the Demo Rick. I love the Vibroverb. I demo one at Guitar Center with my Custom Shop Strat with noiseless pickups and didn't get any hum. Try it see what you think, to me its a perfect match.
Guitar Center also sells a power reducer for all 6L6 tube amps that drop the wattage for all us basement Rock Stars.
THD also sells what they call a Yellow Jacket that you screw your tubes into to drop the wattage. If you looking to sell let me know.
Wow Ricky that is gorgeous tone!!!! And I'm pretty picky about tone. On a cheap guitar too, that really says a lot about the tone of the amp. Two questions though: which brand 5751 are you using here? what are the other tubes, pre & power, that you were using? Gorgeous tone man!!! I,ve gotta' get me one of those RI Vibroverbs.
Sorry not to get back to you sooner. I am using the Groove Tube 5751, a Mullard would be better. The other tubes are stock Fender 12AX7's and Groove Tube 6L6's the amp came with. I also run it with the #1 tube position taken out completely, a trick I learned on the web. The amp just uses the #2 tube for preamp and makes less volume.
rick i bought this amp because of you.. i dont understand what u mean.i thought the 1st tube was the 5751?and which tube should i take out?could you send me a message please..
The amp volume was on 7 for this demonstration, without the Diaz higher power modification or any boost pedals. The 5751 tube replacement for the 12AX7 in the preamp allows the amp to have a lower volume with a better tone. This is a great improvement for these reissue amps, I was ready to sell this amp, it was way to loud and brittle sounding.
Beautiful tone, my friend. Beautiful tone. That amp is unbelievable. What model strat is that and what type of pickups? Thanks much for posting your video.
This strat is a cheap import from Indonesia that I put a Warmoth neck on and sanded down to look vintage! It has the cheap pickups that come with the imports, even more testimony to the tone of the amp, in my opinion. I am going to buy the 57-62 pickups for it in the future, should sound really good.
it' s my dream's amp!!

Reducing the preamp tubes gain factor makes the power section work harder, for a better tone !
12ax7/Ecc83 = 100%
5751 = 70%
12at7/Ecc81 = 60%
Watch out for compatibility !

1957fenderstrat 3 years ago
This reissue amp has a selector switch in the back for either a 50 watt solid state option or the 40 watt tube option. I use the tube option.
It seems louder and cleaner with the solid state selected, so I prefer the tube option.
I also put a vintage Jensen speaker in this.

Thanks alot !! I turn 55 years old tomorrow, I got my first guitar exactly 40 years ago on my birthday and have enjoyed playing ever since. Still chasing the elusive tone and blues styles of my heros, Albert King, SRV, Freddie King.
Thanks a million !!

what pups are in the strat?
philphie 4 years ago
Believe it or not this is a 99 dollar Indonesian import strat with stock pickups. I have since replaced them with Fender 57 62 reissue pickups, MAN what a difference. I would highly recommend them for a strat.

Thanks for the compliments - Yes, this is the Diaz equipped reissue, I don't use the Diaz mods though. It sounds a little dirtier and a whole lot louder if you do use the Diaz mod.
Good luck, watch Ebay, that's where I got mine.

Sounds nice, the tone and sound you are getting is to die for. What pedals are you going through? what guitar and pickups are you using and string size? how is the amp setup? volume..treble..etc. You Rock Sir.
welshtimd 4 years ago
Thanks for comments. Believe it or not, there is no pedal in use , the amp is on about 7 or 8 and is just distorting from the guitar signal (very loud though) The guitar is (no joke) a 99 dollar Fender Indonesian Squire import, pickups and all. I put a Warmoth neck on it with bigger frets. The tone is on 6, no bass, no reverb. I did raise the pickups closer to the strings to make it sustain without a pedal.
Thanks

You make a very good point. Lets cut to the chase on guitars - find one you like, get the pickups, kneck and frets that you prefer and you are set. I did this with a cheap washburn, replaced the kneck, put in jumbo frets and Texas special pickups - what a screamer it is through a 62 Ampeg ReverbRocket

let me see if I get it rigth, no tube # 1 and the #2 tube is a 5751 ??? or v1 is the 5751 and v2 12ax7?? By the way nice sound bro
cheers:)
gwoonk 4 years ago
Either way is an option - putting the 5751 in V1 calms the amp down a little bit, putting ONLY the 5751 in V2 and leaving V1 empty significantly reduces the volume of the amp. To add to the confusion (I hope not) you can put a 12AX7 in V2 by itself as well. This last option gives a good balance of volume and breakup for use without a pedal of some sort.
Thanks for the comments.

Wow, great tone and even better playing. Might be the best I've heard. I have been on the fence for some time about this amp. Please tell me, is it really worth it? I mean REALLY worth it?? Your comments are greatly appreciated.
edpfleger 4 years ago
You know, this is a great question that you emphasize. Even though I've tried to make this amp have the tone I'm looking for, I would have to say NO it's not worth what it costs. I bought this one on Ebay a little cheaper, but I just don't think it is worth what it costs.
In my opinion, a far better amp for tone is the Fender Pro jr. (Yes, thats right) For the money, you can't beat the tone on that little amp. I will post a review of the Pro Jr. soon.
Thanks for you kind words. Good question.

I swear that sounds better than my original 64 vibroverb. The playing helped mind. Excellent video and thanks for taking the time to show it to us!!
TheBeeste 4 years ago
You have an original !! Awesome - what speaker do you have in it? I have a Vintage Jensen in my reissue, I'm thinking that the JBL would be better, or a Weber California. Is your amp all original?
rickyk353 4 years ago
I love this amp, what are your settings in the vid? Great tone and playing!
crossfire1 4 years ago
Thanks alot. I had the amp volume on about 8 without the Diaz mod switch in this video. Since this was filmed I removed the first preamp tube V1 and only run the 5751 tube in the V2 second position, much nicer tone, and not as loud.

could u do a follow up video and show us what u did... that would be helpfull

Thanks for these very useful infos and demo, so little is known about this amp.
And really nice bluesy tunes too.

Thanks for the kind words. I hoped to share with others what I've learned about this amp that may help them get the tone they are looking for, I'm not sure it does it as it comes from Fender.
Thanks

Hello! what diffences do the mod switches on the back of the amp make? Tube rectifier? diode rectifier? stock? modifed? If you have the time!
Thanks
alomanum 4 years ago
You know, I haven't used the mod features on my Vibroverb lately, I use the stock settings for the channels and the tube rectifier as well. It does get much louder with both mods turned on, so I've been moving away from that to try to find a lower volume, less brittle tone for playing in smaller clubs with it.

Thank you for the info and taking the time to write back. Take care

That was an excellent demonstration! Inspired me to try out something similar on my vibroverb.

can you tell me more about these tube replacements? how many do you buy, and where, and now do you go about installing them? replace all? or what? I would appreciate it.
SRSattern 4 years ago
You can learn a great deal about these tube substitutions on the web by doing a search on "fender blackface tubes". Most fender amps use a similar tube setup which can use different tubes. A music store with a good technician can help you as well. The 5751 tube takes the place of the #1 12AX7 tube and reduces the gain in the preamp system, making a sweeter, less biting tone from the Fender amp.
There are other tubes and tube combinations you can try, the web has lots of information.
Good luck
rickyk353 4 years ago
I appreciate your comments. I wanted to add that you can take the #1 preamp tube completely out in most Fender blackface amps and use it, it reallys cuts down on the power and volume the amp has to make it a little "tamer". When used with a good pedal, like a tube screamer, this setup is really nice for small club type playing, not too loud.

rick i dont get it...help..5751 and take out what tube

Ghostman1229 4 years ago
Sorry not to get back to you sooner. I am using the Groove Tube 5751, a Mullard would be better. The other tubes are stock Fender 12AX7's and Groove Tube 6L6's the amp came with. I also run it with the #1 tube position taken out completely, a trick I learned on the web. The amp just uses the #2 tube for preamp and makes less volume.
rickyk353 4 years ago
rick i bought this amp because of you.. i dont understand what u mean.i thought the 1st tube was the 5751?and which tube should i take out?could you send me a message please..
djteleboy 2 years ago
in what volume you are on the amp ?
richiepowa 4 years ago
The amp volume was on 7 for this demonstration, without the Diaz higher power modification or any boost pedals. The 5751 tube replacement for the 12AX7 in the preamp allows the amp to have a lower volume with a better tone. This is a great improvement for these reissue amps, I was ready to sell this amp, it was way to loud and brittle sounding.
Thanks!!

Finally someone posts this amp! lol How bout a lil Diaz Mod sample?

Wow,,, SRV tone all the way. I really want that amp bad.

Beautiful tone, my friend. Beautiful tone. That amp is unbelievable. What model strat is that and what type of pickups? Thanks much for posting your video.
Tornado0fSouls 4 years ago
This strat is a cheap import from Indonesia that I put a Warmoth neck on and sanded down to look vintage! It has the cheap pickups that come with the imports, even more testimony to the tone of the amp, in my opinion. I am going to buy the 57-62 pickups for it in the future, should sound really good.
Cool posting name you have.
Thanks
