Avoid One Thing is one of the best and most under-appreciated punk rock bands to ever come out of Boston. I saw them at the Muddy River Smokehouse in Portsmouth, NH in 2005 with a handful of people and they were absolutely incredible. The Souls are legends and easily one of the best punk bands today, if not ever, but there always will be something special about this version of the song, at least for me. It's a shame they're not together anymore...
I think these guys are like the Dylan of punk, think about All Along the Watchtower, an amazing song but everyone prefers Hendrix's version even though Dylan basically laid out the meat and potatoes of the song. I love this version and the bouncing souls version it's one of my favourite songs.
i think its funny how everyone gets upset when another person disagrees with them, lets face it the bouncing souls version is more produced and sounds better, but this version is great cuz they made the song first. so its a win win right?
You guys should actually listen to Avoid One Thing's other stuff before saying The Bouncing Souls are better because The Bouncing Souls were around for 20 years longer then Avoid One Thing and Avoid One Thing still influenced them.....
hmmm great song BUT the bouncing souls one is more rockish though this is amazing too :) ive gotta friend named sheena so its even cooler i got both on itunes :)
Well yes The Mighty Mighty Bosstones are a big influence on The Bouncing souls but without this song The Bouncing souls would still be The Bouncing souls both great versions of an amazing song long live Ska and Punk!
Wow, the beginning sounds so weird... I never would have guessed it's the same song by the music... but when the rockin starts you can tell it's the same... Just some parts are weird... But you can tell they made it the same... Like retained the elements of the original... :P Good song, though I guess cause I heard Souls first I just prefer their version of the song!
this version is fucking sick. and it's not off beat at all. the drums are exactly the same in both songs... they are basically the same song, with picked guitar with effects in the verse. i love both versions!
I prefer the Souls version, but that's not to knock this song at all. Obviously there would be no Souls cover if not for this original, and besides, this is a great little number.
I prefer the Souls version better but this isn't bad. Just different styles, maybe if people weren't so musically narrow minded they would see that both versions are great.
this is bad, the the souls took this song and made it amazing. they took and pumped it up and made it better. i just saw them again on august 20th..AMAZING<3
i like this version more in away, something about the cheap tacky drum sounds, makes it more intimate. thw raw versions always kick ass. dont get me wrong, the souls version is incredible, helped me through my first couple of weeks of uni when i was really homesick
i'd much prefer the bouncing souls version. its more punk. but u do got to give these guys some credit to for writting it, but i like the bouncing souls version way more.
Thank you for putting this up - I've only heard snippets before. I prefer the Souls version better, but I'm definitely biased towards my favorite band of all time. Of course, this is still a great track, and it's cool to see the differences between the two styles.
I love this song and the cover by the Bouncing Souls is just as amazing :D

Avoid One Thing's album, "Avoid One Thing", was released in 2002.
The third track of the album is Lean on Sheena.
Bouncing Souls' "original version" of this song is the eighth track on the album, "The Gold Record", which was released on June 26, 2006.
Look it up, kid. Avoid One Thing is obviously a group of time travelers.
Also, this version is fucking badass, even though I love the Souls' version, too.

This is terrible.

I would have been happy to drum this album so they didn't have that lame soul-less machine undermining the pathos of the song.

This i an even older version than I remember hearing from AOT. I don't remember the flanged guitar picking or the drum machine.

I just learned that the bouncing souls covered this song
I haven't heard this song since around 2006, and I wanted to listen to it for nostalgia
also, I quit listening to the bouncing souls before the gold album came out
I don't have anything against them, but I was never a big fan of theirs
I respect them more now that I know they covered this, though

are either or, when or what ska or punk? labels have got me down. just sounds like a rock song to me!
blackfrancis55 2 years ago
Both versions are completely different and I think the Bouncing Souls just made it sound like a much different song...and they did a sweet job.
But obviously if it wasn't for the original song there would have never been a cover.
I do like the vocals on this version, but I like the music in the BS version.
