What is so hard to figure out? It's straightforward country singing of the highest caliber. It tells a story plain and simple. There's nothing incoherent about it. It teaches biblical, old country moral values. As far as their voice quality it isn't meant to impress as so much music following them seems to be. It was genuine, melodic and soothing. At least this is my opinion.

Think the ambiguity in the lyrics is part of what makes the song great. It challenges your understanding. I don't think "coherency" is necessary at all to appreciate a song. That is part of the almost mystical beauty of art. I also disagree with the statement that the Carter Family was really not that good "by modern standards". Their music did what music was designed to do. If it doesn't make the grade "by modern standards" then I disagree with modern standards.
My daughter and I listened to this song over and over again a few years ago on a ride in my truck. Together we tried to analyze it but never really figured it out. We didn't figure it out, but boy did we enjoy it. I miss those times when this Dad had his daughter to share this kind of stuff together.
@FDosty You can't understand it because the lyrics they sing don't make much sense overall. The gender changes from verse to verse and it's sung with no emotion whatsoever. Later versions of the song are much better and more coherent. The Carter Family was really not that good by modern standards. It's not just the technology was primitive; they just didn't sing that well.
I love this song. One of my earliest memories is hearing this song on my grandpa's record player. That must have been around 1966 and this song was and oldie even way back then.
man ap had it goin on banging to hot gals singing on the road with them creating country history and gettin paid 4 it and writing the worlds greatest country lyrics ever........ this band was like the beatles of country folk blues my heroes =)
@buckbuck666 You are one stupid jackass, saying that about the Carter ladies, you don't know one thing about them, and still you run your mouth about them. Perhaps the women in your life, your mother, your wife, are loose women, who anyone could bang, and that is why you would think that about these ladies. Your heroes, - you don't denigrate heroes.
I almost think the Carter Family INVENTED Country music!
