• Didn't they use this on an episode of "Absolutely Fabulous" ?

  • This is very, very difficult to bring off. A great performance

  • Man's man.

  • BRILLIANT. BRILLIANT. BRILLIANT.

    Songs today are shit.

  • Another great version by Scott of a great song by Jacques. The english adaptation is good i think.

  • i live marc almond version better

  • One of the best songs ever performed! the intension is very interesting....

  • Mate, That's what Dads" DO!! Mess with your head, as a son God Knows what crap goes through wimins heads

  • The first time I'd ever heard of this song was when i was watching Absolutely Fabulous, lol

  • Comment removed

  • Scott Walket did a great job by spreading Jacques Brel's music throughout the English speaking countries. Brel was a genious in many ways, as a lyrist, composer and performer.

  • wat a showman

  • What ever happened to Scott? Does somebody know?

  • @spikeysmum Scott is still going, Some of his music is hardwork these days ,But can be very rewarding . Try his 90,s L.P. TILT, initially its unlistenable yet you have to keep going back to it, The musical equivalent of olives. Try it one night lights turned down strong drink in hand, you won,t regret it, Good Luck.

  • Brilliant, chanced on this clip, thanx for downloading this. Awesome

  • Yet another French song (by Jacques Brel) ripped by the Brits.

  • @Rachegotter Do you mean Belgian? Aim to distinguish European countries.

  • @Rachegotter And Scott Walker's American, right?

  • @Rachegotter And on the basis that Scott's American, presumably your comment should read: "Yet another Belgian song (by Jacques Brel) ripped by the Yanks", right?

  • @TheDiamond2007 Matters not. Anglophones are to me a deformed and uneducated groveling mass that spews but crap. As for the Belgians, they're French when they have talent. It's a well-known fact which even anglophones don't ignore. Sur ce, bon vent.

  • @Rachegotter You're right. It matters not that you're completely, and wholly, factually incorrect. There's deformed and uneducated for you. I'm truly sorry that the French have such a huge inferiority complex when dealing with the English.

  • @TheDiamond2007 "The French". I'm honored that you would declare me as representing my 67 millions fellow citizens. As far as "inferiority" is concerned, English is nothing more than an offspring of French. 70% of your words come frome mine. "Dieu et mon droit". Et honnis sois-tu si tu mal y penses...

  • @Rachegotter So where does this leave us? You're completley wrong on the subject of Jacques Brel/Scott Walker and I'm 70% French. This is most unsatisfactory.

  • @TheDiamond2007 It leaves us at the point where a francophone song was ripped off by anglophones. Further examples include "somewhere beyond the sea", "the autumn leaves", and "my way". And then the anglophones go around mocking and dismissing French music. Ignorance is a weed ; it dies hard.

  • @Rachegotter "Anglophones go around mocking and dismissing French music". Interesting that you should now speak on behalf of the entire English speaking world. I've never heard people mocking and dismissing French music. In fact, I very, very rarely hear people mention French music. Why would that be? I think that's your real gripe.

  • @TheDiamond2007 I've said it before, anglophones all look alike to me. I can't distinguish them from one another. It's just as if there were only one (obese, balding, with bad teeth, bigoted with an overly pronounced taste for money and materialistic stuff, uneducated, speaks at most one language, afraid of everything, eats crap). I think this is an accurate description.

  • @TheDiamond2007 ...and you mention 3 French songs covered in the English language - let's be charitable and include Scott Walker covers of that "French" singer, the Belgian Jacques Brel - for each mentioned, I could list 1,000 classic English songs. The truth is, French language music is nothing more than a odd little curio in a very small corner of the occasional record shop.

  • Oh Yeah ,Scott Walker is God.

  • Germans probably should'nt gear their song choices towards ones that have Lyrics involving boots.Just saying?

  • Real music

  • like it

  • the woman singing Boots is smiling too much... this song should be sung with a pissed off look...

  • The guy in 4.29 is surely John. You can see Gary, too.

  • scott walker the best!

  • lol what a wide imagery he's formed with the help of his gestures hahah..

  • That was fun! Enjoyed the Nancy Sinatra at the end too. Must have been fun to be young then! I'd've been right there man!

  • awesome!

  • The guy in 4:29 is Scott ??

  • Its John Walker. If you YouTube "Walker Brothers - The sun ain't gonna shine anymore 1965" You'll see him performing with Scott. He is also at the tail end of this clip after "These Boots" which leads into "The sun ain't gonna shine anymore". Its part of the same show.

  • No but he kinda looks like John Walker...

  • He could actually probably sing me into bed.

  • Never seen this until now!

Wow - some fine and expressive hand gestures there.

    What a lovely clip!

  • HOLY SHIT that was one of coolest things Ive ever heard

  • definitely lip-synching. This is exactly to the note the recorded version of the song. Was the done thing at the time, no big deal.

  • scott walker is one of the few great, powerful singers, although he is still making music today,he seems to cater for a less mainsteam market.i admire the power and drama in his cover of this song originally sung in french by jacques brel, and as a singer myself i do this version as it is a real "singer's song"although,i dont think marc almond did a half bad job of it either, but for me,scott's version is best,if he re-releaed it, he would show the current talentless r &b "singers" how its done !

  • Damn sixties. He IS lipsyncing. Nobody can be that dramatic and sing......

  • Yes he was that dramatic and he could sing. I saw him live in 1966 with the Walker Brothers and there was no lip syncing then it hadnot been invented there is no one with a voice as good!!

  • Jacques brel could...

  • rod mcuen did alot of those songs.

  • Does anyone know who translated from the original French lyric to the English as sung by Scott? I don't have the record sleeve but would be happy if someone could enlighten me.

  • Mort Shuman translated all of Scott's Brel songs except for "If You Go Away" /"Ne Me Quitte Pas" (lyrics by Rod McKuen).

  • Thanks guidofski.

  • I'm pretty sure that it was Mort Shuman he did 'Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris' his translations were far closer to the originals than Rod McKuen's sugary versions

  • jackie rules!!!

if you like this i'm sure you'll love the last shaddow puppets

  • I love this song but can someone tell me what it is actually about?

  • The original was by Belgian artist Jacques Brel and in French. This version loses something in translation. Basically it is about being able to live with all your childish wishes through out your whole life but with a heap of poetic licence thrown in to describe what you want to be doing in your life. I could write you out the lyrics but it would take 3 or 4 posts.

  • I bought the 45 in London, still got it....It was banned by the BBC cos it has the word ASS in it, how things change. IN fact got all the original lps, 45s, and eps

  • yeah jacques brel!

  • Happy Birthday Mr. Engel (better known as Scott Walker!!)

Wishing you good health and a lot moments of happiness. May God bless you on your special day!

Stay as beautiful as you are!!!!

  • The Original (with translation) by Jaques Brel is a must-see after this. It's on youtube.

Brel is truly a chanseur- very emotive, very funny!

    Check it out!

  • It's a shame Scott Walker isn't better known in Belgium and other french-speaking countries, since he can sing Brel far better than many other foreign artists !

  • correct

  • AWESOME ;)

  • Esse cara é genial!!!

    Muito bom!

  • One of the finest songs ever made whether the Brel orginal or this one. Just the greatest lyric ever spat out.

  • Brilliant. Bowie owes heaps to Scott Walker...

  • @ajdunning63 and Sid Vicious

  • @ajdunning63 Brilliant. Walker owes heaps to Jacques Brel...

  • Jackie is one of the greatest songs ever.

    Who's Eileen?

  • Great. Jackie is fantastic, such a 'grown up' pop song. However Eileen is the star of this show...I love the audience as well, they are so hip they could be out of central-casting, good work. Fantastic post.

  • Just bought the album Scott Walker sings Jacques Brel and i can now see where The Last Shadow Puppets got there influence from

    Brilliant album

    Thanks for the post

    Cheers

    JB

  • And by influence we really mean nicked it wholesale.

I don't think that Scott Walker or indeed Jacques Brel would begrudge them though.

  • Very clever cynical lyrics great song by scott walker.

  • you mean J.Brel

  • I stand corrected Jacques Brel`s cynical

lyrics, but sung well by Scott Walker.

  • I forgot... THIS VIDEO WAS TAPED BY ONE OF MY FRIENDS IN BARCELONA

  • This video was taped on Spanish TV end 1979. First shown in 1972 on Spanish TV together with the song WORLD STRONGEST MAN and a week later JAMIE by John Walker.

John Walker is dancing on THESE BOOTS ARE MADE FOR WALKING

  • Don't forget the truly magnificent orchestration of Wally Stott. His arrangements complement Scott's voice perfectly.

Go out right now and buy Scott 1, 2, 3 and 4.

  • Listen to Tommy Wallach perform this song. He's great!!

  • walker had to rely on rod mckuen's translations of brel, which are for the most part pretty weak. but mr. engel sings the hell out of them, even matching brel's rapid fire delivery. to to hear them in this voice in french would be tremendous.

  • The 'arm waving' is a dedication to Jaques Brel's original performance of Jacky.

  • The actions are inappropriate and distracting. The song is strong enough to stand on its own without all the arm waving.

  • arm waving= woop

  • its hard to believe this song is so old, truly origional material

  • haha am i the only not hearing his influence in Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas?

  • pdevine, i was thinking that, i always imagine that skelington singing 'montague terrace in blue' too :]

  • 'strongly recommend' scott 2,4,..fuck it all of them!

  • "cute cute in a stupid ass way"

THIS SONG IS INCREDIBLE....Scott Walker is a genius...

  • Pure Genius!

  • can really hear how the last shadow puppets are using scott walker as a major influence, pretty sweet!

  • oh really ? tell me bout it

  • well there album has real simalarities to him

  • great song

  • Sublime - the guy is a genius. The Walker Brothers were amazing but Scott himself just got better and better and those four solo albums he released were brilliant. I love the epic, cinematic feel of his performances. Tremendous!

  • 'a singer with a Spanish bum'! hahaha

This is fab, so dramatic, gloriously debauched and decadent.

I saw a documentary about him a while ago - his music now is very experimental and not at all commercial, and has been so for many years. He eschewed the mainstream music scene and celebrity because he is one of the rare ones who has integrity, amazing talent and hasn't destroyed himself with drugs!

  • he has completely lost the plot,i think he was just to intelligent for his time.

  • Hah, I love his movements. As well as the song.

  • I love Jacques Brel. When was that show ? in 60's ?

  • no hes very much alive and well.

  • my dad played it to me a few days ago and now its in my head!! lol

I love him!! I he dead????

  • oh no, he's very much alive. He had a new album out a few years ago, but the music he makes now is nothing like this.

  • thank you

  • If I were growing up at the time that this had aired or been filmed, he would have been my teen idol.

  • alex turner without the asbo

  • you know x

  • simply beautiful

  • amazing voice and an amazing talent still today, poet musician, producer ,singer.

this guy is an icon for sure. they dont make scott walker's anymore an even if they did Simon cowel wuold not recoginse the talent.

  • I watched a film about him last night on BBC 4. I've always liked the Walker Bros. but some of his later stuff was awesome.

  • 4 Men With Beards (yes, a record label!) is reissuing the first 4 on vinyl very soon!

  • Legend. simple as that

  • Scott Walker was the most gorgeous man in the 60's. And he talent too, but he let his personal problems and insecurities overcome his talent.

  • yeah i mean, he seems like he would have been huge- good looks, beautiful voice-- but at the same time his songs are dark and almost overtly weird. he rules. a long time favorite.

  • WOW, he is to die for!

    Sorry hate his stuff now

  • prefer his stuff NOW...lol

  • Absolutely brilliant!

  • haha, i like his impression of a grandmother.

  • Me too. And I don't know why because I've never seen any old lady do that. But for some reason it works.

  • Hehe. I worked in nursing homes in the past, and if they're that decrepid, they usually can't reach their hands up that far, but I've seen similar body movements, yes. He has the right idea.

    ;-D

  • britain certainly was a lot more liberal back then.

  • is this really video of someone singing on 1960s tv? i wouldn't think they'd use phrases like "stupid-ass way" in the '60s. lol that's why when i heard the song, i thought it was joke, recorded by someone recently. and this video was an extension of that joke... making it look at all rat-packish 1960s. lol

  • This performance was probably on British TV. Scott Walker was much bigger over there than in the States. British TV is/was much less puritanical than American TV.

  • This performance was actually on Spanish tv, although he did perform it at least twice on British TV before the BBC banned it

  • where can you find this song anywhere- or any of his music i cant find any on itunes

  • Hi; Apologies if this info is too late - Scott's albums (Scott 1, 2, 3, 4) contain Brel songs. but there is a compilation 'Scott Walker Sings Jacqes Brel' which has then all. Suggest you have a look on Amazon.

  • Scott 4 Is all originals actually.

  • Oops! - Quite right - I really must re-visit these albums.

  • damn! never thought I'd ever see him perform this!

  • ween6600 - Do you enjoy Scotran Walker?

  • The God-Like Genius Of Scott Walker is here for all to behold.

  • Great Virile Voice.

    Very surprising.

    Cool hommage to Jack Brel.

  • I remember all these Scott songs as my Mum was a massive fan - in fact this song was banned by Radio 1 if I remember correctly.

  • love it!

  • Scott provided the soundtrack to my very tearful adolescence which sounds corny but I remember lowering the volume of my record player so my parents wouldn't catch the lyrics!! I was about 14 when I fell in love with Scott singing Mathilde and its a relationship which still survives...I still listen to him regularly, just don't tire of good music.

  • truely amazing

  • absolutely brilliant. gorgeous too.

  • How did he get away with singing such baudy lyrics on TV in those days? Including the hand gesture, just to emphasise "yes I did just sing the word queer".

  • Scott Walker is the MAESTRO - great JB song - well performed - such a good voice - THANKS for sharing

  • omg he is so cool

  • truly fantastic

  • Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "every little movement has a meaning all its own", doesn't it? Fantastic performance of a fantastic song. Scott was a class act (and damned hot!!)

  • Love the gestures.

  • Good eh? Sad that he seems to have lost it of late.

  • You are kidding??

Beau beau, beau et con a la fois! Listen to "Farmer in the City" off Tilt - it'll knock your socks off.

  • Sginzburg, I gave the version of the Farmer on YouTube a couple of minutes but my socks stayed definitely on! It was difficult to listen to and sad to see that the vicacity and "oomph" had gone. I hope it will return. Tuneless dirges is not the way to go.

  • just saw your comment, i listened to " Farmer"..do I hear 21 21 21?..no I hear a load of shit...he's lost it bigtime.

  • that eileen girl looks like the girl from the all girl summer fun band

  • I haven't got the superlatives to describe this.

  • Has he said "spanish bomb" ??

  • Noo! The line's 'a singer with a spanish bum'

  • great song..one of the best

  • This is a Jacques Brel song. I think it was banned from the BBC for a time(?) I do know it was considered quite risqué, and never even made it as a hit Stateside!

  • cute cute ... in a stupid ass way

  • LOve the hand gesture for the "Authentic Queers" line LOL. Wonderful performance.

  • I love this song.

  • Scott Walker's "The Drift" is the album of the decade. (And "Tilt" was the soundtrack of the 90's)

  • He introduced me to BREL

I have all Scott walkers lps

  • Well, if that's not "cute cute in a stupid-ass way" I don't know what is. :D I think I'm in love.

  • if I could be Scott Walker for just one hour

  • What an ignorant comment. Scott Walker was a superb interpreter of Brel songs.

  • he doesn't even understand the humor and irony of the song---he dishonors Brel---what a bore

  • complètement d'accord avec toi. Brel était provocateur, irrévérencieux, drôle. Ce scott fait de la soupe.

  • The Scott Walker clip...that's totally not my kind of music, yet it's so strangely compelling, esp all the hand gestures. I keep watching it over and over again.

Not sure what to think of the chick singing the Nancy Sinatra song.

  • What a pleasure it must be to rightly, realise the camera loves you. Now I see why all those eighties pop stylists like Cope and Almond thought Mr. Engel was a god like Genius. Superb song. Superb Singer.

  • This is fabulos. Scott has the best voice. But get aload of Marc Almond delivering the performance of a lifetime on live BBC TV with the same song circa 1991. Someone out there has it!

  • Wonderful cover of the original song by Jacques Brel ...

    Five stars without hesitation ...

  • He was really enjoyeing that, wasn't he? I hereby pronounce The History Of Pop Music royally changed.
