I love ice fishing as well but why the heck did ya throw your fish back? That was a decent sized salmon guys, humans need to eat same as anything else on earth and you got it fair and square,so ya just throw it back in again?! ...I don't get it.

The beauty of ice fishing is that anyone can do it. The only thing you need is a plastic Barbie fishing rod/reel, some cheap line, a randomly-selected lure and a hole in the ice! No skill required! Even a five-year-old can do it!
If your kidding, funny! If not you have no clue what your talking about! Ice safety, tip ups,tip downs, good line is a must, certain lures fro certain fish, depth of where fish are,bait............
do you know what the survival rate is for fish that are caught and released under those conditions? Depending on the air temperature, a few minutes out of the water can result in significant damage to the eyes and gills.
Yes, I know and I agree. That's why were only fishing C'n'R when the wind is calm and it's above -5 degrees Celsius. I have read a lot of surveys in this matter. Its important that we know these things when fishing.
Best technique-Once you start jigging try different jigging rhythms until one works. Start with a 1-2 foot lift and fall rhythm. Then let the lure settle and remain still for about 20 seconds in between the lift/fall rhythm. Vary the speed and the length of the 'jig' rhythm to try to find one that works. Sometimes when nothing seems to work try 'thrumming'. This is the process of rapidly 'wiggling' the rod tip so that the lure quickly jigs up and down within a 1-3 inch vertical movement.
I the first shot of the guy by the fire with deep snow and birch trees reminds me of when I was a kid ice fishing in northern Michigan. It looks the same. My feet would get cold and I'd hold my boots to the fire and the bottoms would melt. :) My mom didn't like that.
Sweden*. I went fishing in Sweden in 2006 during Summer and I caught a really nice Pike (Gadda). We went fishing in this man's lake (He is the tour guide that we will travel with on sleighs) and he said to me "Cast over there!". I did what he said and I caught the Pike/Gadda! He is an awesome guy.
In a couple of years I'm going to Seweden in Winter and a guide (Like the Swedish Steve Irwin (R.I.P Steve)) is going to take us on a three day journey. We will travel in sleighs with deers pulling them and we'll go fishing. It will be heaps of fun.
Yes, we eat salmon and trout. But I think that you only should keep what you're going to eat that day. We catch a lot of salmon and sea trouts every year, most of the times that we're fishing and guiding. This means that most of the fish will be returned to the water. In this way you will ensure that that generation after you also will be able to fish for salmon and sea trout.
Sorry for removing your comment, I didn't mean to. We have some good pike water here too. Bart from Holland were fishing here and in 2 days we did catch 5 pike over 100 cm. The biggest one was 117 cm.
that's big, I don't catch that big ones here, but I don't visit real big waters, as I got no boat. Here I catch like 70cm average, some bigger, some smaller. But Sweden, Finland and Norway are very interesting, and I really want to fish there at least once in my life! :-)
The salmons are bright, but NOT runners. The salmons are running the River Lule from July-middle of September. From September to December the salmon will be in the spawn colour (black, brown) and from the end of January the salmons will be bright again. Some salmons stay in the river to the end of May and some of the will go back to the sea in December.
I love seeing level winds on the ice. I have a medium/heavy rig for Pike and Musky. Lift and wind, I love seeing that on the ice, it's a totally different way of fishing for those that have never tried it.
That salmon looked like a good fish to take for food. What's the standard size of fish you keep? Or do you generally catch and release?
The hard this is to find the fish. LuleRiver is a very big river and the hot spots is few during the winter. So the knowledge you need is to know where the hot spots are. Else you will be fishing with out a strike for weeks.
OK, I am sorry I didnt realise that. I am just used to fly fishing which takes a lot of practice. But I also understand that knowing were to fish is important. My apologies.
PS thats a much bigger salmon than I have caught!
Why do all say that norrbotten is in lapland? Norrbotten is a landscape and Västerbotten is a landscape and Lapland is a landscape But the are in Norrland, so you cant say that boden and luleå is in lapland because it is in norrbotten
Swedish Lapland is an area that's located in the landscape of Norrbotten and Västerbotten (northern Sweden). There also an Swedish Lapland in Härdedalen (fjällen=The Swedish Mountains).
First thing I've learned about icefishing, never release a fish which was out of the water. just because the blood and water in his gills freeze instantly when taken out to freezing cold air, and the fish will die later. Other than that, pretty nice fish.
I agree, I think that you have a point. But there's also some more factors to consider, like the abount of time the fish is out of the water, the wind force, the temperature and how you handel the fish.
For an example, research show that the fish do well when it's only -8 degrees Celsius. This particularly day is was -3 degrees Celsius.
True, I agree with you in everypoint. It was more a comment at all. I go icefishing in the swiss mountains, there we never have temps more than -10°. Still nice fish :)
Yes, C'n'R is one of the most important tools for fish care and the future. We can't take all the fish we catch, it's no point. We need to secure the species and the future.

Generallt we catch and relsease.
I only keep about 10 (out of > 200) sea trouts every year and about 5 salmons (out of > 100).
Best size sea trout to ceep is 50-60 cm and for salmon it is 70-100 cm.
When it comes to pike we release all the pikes. My guest is that I catch about 300-400 pikes every year, some seasons even more.
ArcticFishing 4 years ago
yikes! how much time of the year do you fish for? I think a more important question is how much time of a day do you fish for? :P
