well the fact that you have .395 to hit a baseball even coming at that speed makes it way slower than hitting it at .350 so in the long run hitting a softball is much harder than hitting a baseball.
Standing closer makes the hitter have less time to react. This is a great scientific discovery. If it wasn't so biased in their approach setting up their research it would have been ok. yo have to understand that when a baseball is pitched it goes in as a down angle and when a softball is pitched is is straight so a softball players battting tecniques are different then baseball players so of course its going to be difficult to hit.

To make this a much more accurate test I think the "scientists" should have thrown in a major league pitcher and batter, for both softball and baseball, and not make it the apparently one sided test that this is.

Can you please tell me how you arrive at "She may be 35 feet closer"? By my math (and most conventional methods of mathematics), the difference is 17.5 feet.

The ball that jenny finch pitches is a 47 core softball. Those are the hardest balls they play with besides senior league softball players use 50. A baseball is made of string. Of course a softball with break the glass...it has a hard core. The baseball is string. And that isnt nolan ryan pitching either.
iv played both sports. Iv played baseball every sence i was little till my 4th year in the Minor leagues. Then i traveled around playing Mens fast pitch. The hitting style is the same. Everything about the hitter is the same. One swing for both sports. Iv came to the conclusion,Hitting a riseball is hard. But hitting a small baseball is much difficult. Softballs are much bigger and easier to hit. point being-90mpH slider=much harder to hit then a riseball. 100 Hardball-harder to hit then a sball

softball is a harder sport to play then baseball. in baseball there is no itch that can't rise, so every pitch in baseball, the movement is always downwasrd. in softball the ball can either drop or it can rise, making it harder to guess if the ball in gonna be dn ir up. and if the pitcher can throw between 75 and 85 mph then it's quite hard to hit.

And about the upward and downward motion....a baseball can be pitched high and low. it doesn't matter about if it drops or comes up. either way its the height of the ball that matters.
Why is it harder to hit a softball for a baseball player? Easy, the baseball goes from high to low, the batter is used to that. The softball goes from low to high (or stays the same, whatever) but the batter is not used to getting a ball like that.
Whenever a baseball player really trains on hitting a softball pitcher, he'd easily be able to do the same as against a baseball pitcher..

@BIGwurm13 - She isn't anywhere near the best softball pitcher in the world. It says in the video that she can throw 70 mph. The pitcher on our midget team can throw 70+ mph. In the ISC's (some of the best softball in the world), pitchers can throw upwards to 85 mph.

its not about being sexist. Like I wrote before avg MLB salry is almost $4M dollars, avg SB salary is $50K. If softball players can hit the more difficult SB then simple economics would mean that they would be recruited to hit the "easier" baseball.

@billywms its possibble for under hand to be 60 feet we could do it i have done drills from 60 ft to home plate its easy (to bulid speed) but it takes away from the game and the point. softball and baseball are practicly comepletly diffrent.

fyi people jenny finch is not the best pitcher thats is on (was on ) team usa. she was better a first base and i played base ball and i have played softball verry diffrent its harder to play softball becuase of the angle the motion and the fact that there 43 feet away. First of all, this was a weighted experiment. They got the best softball pitcher in the world to face some guy named Bryan Byrne(who's that?). Secondly, Mr. Jorgenson weakened the plexi-glass or "force plate" as they called it with a ball made of twine and cowhide. Then, they got Miss USA to throw a pitch 30 feet closer, with a ball twice as large and harder than a baseball. She may be 35ft closer but that just means that softball players have less reaction time to hit the ball like 20% less. Not to mention that we have to go against gravity in order just to make contact with the ball. A baseball comes in on a downward motion a softball in an upward motion so in order to hit a softball one has to raise their hands unlike baseball where you have to drop your hands which is much easier. Hitting a softball is no easier than hitting a baseball. try it for yourself

some of you need to understand simple math before attempting to analyze laws of physics. 60.5 feet, is the distance from which a baseball pitcher delivers a pitch. 43 feet is the distance from which a softball pitcher delivers a pitch. Can you please tell me how you arrive at "She may be 35 feet closer"? By my math (and most conventional methods of mathematics), the difference is 17.5 feet.

The ball that jenny finch pitches is a 47 core softball. Those are the hardest balls they play with besides senior league softball players use 50. A baseball is made of string. Of course a softball with break the glass...it has a hard core. The baseball is string. And that isnt nolan ryan pitching either.

iv played both sports. Iv played baseball every sence i was little till my 4th year in the Minor leagues. Then i traveled around playing Mens fast pitch. The hitting style is the same. Everything about the hitter is the same. One swing for both sports. Iv came to the conclusion,Hitting a riseball is hard. But hitting a small baseball is much difficult. Softballs are much bigger and easier to hit. point being-90mpH slider=much harder to hit then a riseball. 100 Hardball-harder to hit then a sball

1. No softball player hit against a baseball pitcher
2. It was the best softball pitcher in the world against an average prospect
3. Force has nothing to do with how hard it is to hit a ball
4. A 95 MPH fastball is the average speed for an MLB Pitcher. Have a guy who can throw 100+ and it's harder
5. In baseball there is the opportunity to throw at any arm angle so a rise ball is possible if the pitcher threw submarine

softball is a harder sport to play then baseball. in baseball there is no itch that can't rise, so every pitch in baseball, the movement is always downwasrd. in softball the ball can either drop or it can rise, making it harder to guess if the ball in gonna be dn ir up. and if the pitcher can throw between 75 and 85 mph then it's quite hard to hit.

And about the upward and downward motion....a baseball can be pitched high and low. it doesn't matter about if it drops or comes up. either way its the height of the ball that matters.

Why is it harder to hit a softball for a baseball player? Easy, the baseball goes from high to low, the batter is used to that. The softball goes from low to high (or stays the same, whatever) but the batter is not used to getting a ball like that.
Whenever a baseball player really trains on hitting a softball pitcher, he'd easily be able to do the same as against a baseball pitcher..

@BIGwurm13 - She isn't anywhere near the best softball pitcher in the world. It says in the video that she can throw 70 mph. The pitcher on our midget team can throw 70+ mph. In the ISC's (some of the best softball in the world), pitchers can throw upwards to 85 mph.

its not about being sexist. Like I wrote before avg MLB salry is almost $4M dollars, avg SB salary is $50K. If softball players can hit the more difficult SB then simple economics would mean that they would be recruited to hit the "easier" baseball.
Just because people need time to adjust to something doesnt mean that they cant ultimately do that thing
