I remember this from a PBS broadcast I recorded from T.V. as a kid. They did this and CC Rider, both of which just killed. Mitch is giving his all, and Johnny Badanjek is a god damned killer. If you have that version of CC Rider, post it up, man. Also, I noticed the discussion of the term "cats". I picked it up as a kid (I grew up around a lot of musicians. I play, too.), and I never thought twice about using the term. Funny how words just fade out of use. Doing my part to keep that one alive:)
I went to a Halloween party once as a "devil with a blue dress on" complete with red satin horns and tail, and no one got the joke! sad.... lol... there were musicians there!
I played this in marching band. it was way back, in about 9th grade, it took me this long to hear it. I liked what we played. It sounds like it. Not with the good golly miss molly song.
Saw this guy in Chicago World Of Wheels on a Saturday night. He was really wild then and the band was great. Time goes on, where did all the fun go to?
5:07 YouTube video: Mitch Ryder singing his "Devil With A Blue Dress On" and "Good Golly, Miss Molly"
February 26, 1945: birth of Mitch Ryder, American musician (The Detroit Wheels); recorded several hit records in the mid to late 1960s, most notably "Devil With A Blue Dress On" [flip-side was "Good Golly, Miss Molly"], their highest-charting single, #4 in 1966.
@Rockinghorserider1 I don't know about Hub Kapp & The Wheels. It isn't listed on their page at Amazon. "Devil" was co-written and recorded by Frederick "Shorty" Long on the "Soul" label in 1964 and its here on YouTube. Mitch added Good Golly Miss Molly & rocked it. Grateful Dead did the same medley several times on stage in 1987 and it is available out there amongst the Dead Sea of unauthorized "Dead" recordings.
@davcnslt I gather that YouTube doesn't allow posting URLs in their comments postings. I wanted to add links to the info above. For a listen to Shorty Long's original recording of "devil w/ a blue dress click on my name. I've added it to my favorites. For a link to the Amazon dot com reference to Hub Kapp & The Wheels go to "dubya dubya dubya dot amazon dot com / Hub-Kapp-Kollektion-Wheels/dp/B000AQH71Y" Sorry I couldn't just link it due to the moronic luddites that run this site.
rentatrip - I don't have a clue what the water is about, but it does look freaky in the video. I searched the web for any reference to using water in a snare head or any drum for that matter, and couldn't find any reference. I went to Badanjek's site, and no reference there either. Dropped him a note through the link on the site, but no answer.
I think Hub Kapp & the Wheels did this song in the early 60s. Then when I heard Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels do the same song later, I thought maybe Hubb had morphed into Mitch. Am I mistaken on this? I was on a lot of other things in that era. Will appreciate any answers.
One thing about your lyrics... It's "She walks real cool, catches everybody's eye, the cat's are too nervous they can't say Hi... Cats was a slang term for guys (Cool Guys. or Cool cats) Just showing my age now. ha ha
@Jazzy9964 - I can dig it man. Even Elvis talked the talk. My cousin, a musician his whole adult life, as well as producer, engineer, teacher, collector, is 12 years older than my young 64 years, and still talks the talk (and plays!) I hope it never dies so say it proudly man. The lingo comes of of the Hipster sub culture of the 40s. Kerouac called it jive talk. Mitch Ryder was definitely a cool cat.
@davcnslt it's funny, I mention this EXACT same thing to someone else about a year ago, who posted these same lyrics (they cut and paste from a lyric site) and they said " That doesn't make sense, why would a cat be nervous?" I failed to enlighten them about the history of Slang and jive...I just gave them the correct lyrics.
@davcnslt Hey Thanks for that... I'm just 46 but playing bass with alot of guys 10 - 20 years older than me.. you pick up on that great hipster slang..
Sadly one of the most under-rated vocalist in rock history. Personally, i think his version of Lou Reed's "Rock and Roll" one of the most kick-ass songs ever.
In high school we used to play Devil and Pretty Woman alternately at the box non stop at full blast. After about 15 minutes of that as we went outside could not hear anything for about 5 minutes !!!! WOW,
I have Linda Sue Dixon. I just have to work out how to place it YouTube. It will come. I think it is the greatest song of all time. I remember Reverend Black @ the Swingin
Vickers used to play it at Wollongong. Man they were good days.
this song is as good as it gets. these guys set the standard for rock and roll then and now.this was in the 60s and these dudes were recording video and audio at the same time. almost unheard of in those days.excellent video.
this the real dude.he's the one that made this one of the best songs to come out in the 60s. guys put a lot of work into playing this with audince particpation.
I remember dancing to Mitch Ryder and The Detroit Wheels Band at a Club called Action City in the Flatbush Section of Brooklyn back in the 60s. We liked to do the skate dance! Mitch Ryder is cool.
one of my favorite bands/ song from the best era for music - the 60's!! yaaaaah!! I'm a baby boomer & this song still makes me wanna get up & shake my thang!! lol Love you Mitch!!!~~~<3
@wannnagback Yeah I always digged this record & Mitch is still a cool Daddy-O. I'm Gen X & I just saw two devils 2 day, one had on a blue dress & the other a red dress & man o man did they look sweeeeettt! I wanted to play devil's advocate on both of those fine babes but my saintly angel side said, "Now behave boy!" LOL
i love this song i ngo to a dance school and i am doing a solo to this song aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa bye
@lavh93 the little E string at the bottom is under a LOT of pressure, it's got the tightest wind and is really easy to break in a concert. Happens a lot. This is one reason most guitarists keep at least one extra guitar on stage.
I totally agree, as a 10-year old, listening to CKLW (AM) Detroit radio was unbeleivable, Motown ,kick-ass rock n roll. johnny B and Mitch set the table for the Boss and others who used the Detroit/Cleveland fan base to get their carrers rolling. BTW Mitch is 65!
When I was a kid growing up in the UK, he was a name you just about knew, but you never heard any of his music. Really only got to hear his stuff from YouTube - really great performer. The old TV clips also show what talent he had as well. Really loved this clip.
If you are interested I own the orginal 33 1/3 record Album of Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels. Let me know, it is for sale make me a offer.
Also I am 69 I can also shake it to Mitch Ryder - Rock and Roll Will Never Die. I play guitar and drums and we are having a JAM Session on Halloween - I am going as a blues guy.
Its a shame Mitch Ryder is forgotten by many.He should've been huge. When I first heard of his song I thought I was listening to James Brown! The scream is so much like him!
I was pottering around here, thinking about all the old songs when I found this. I had it on 45, and grew up through the sixties. This brings up a lot of memories, thanks for posting it.
Saw this on a cable show many years ago. It was an oldies reunion that featured a lot of artists. I think they did Litlle Latin Lupe De Lupe on the same program.

This is a little different version then im used to hearing but still he sounds good. Some songs no matter who sings them you still get the same feeling not this one only Mitch can give it justice.
