when I put regular eyeliner on it always looks like i have dirt under my eyes! I can't get it close enough to my upper lash line either!

Hi, um I have really long eyelashes and I just started wearing eyeliner, how do I go around my eyelashes. This may seem like a really stupid question but its always bothered me. Oh and how do I do that smoky look around my eyes.
