I am a great fan of Renee and I enjoyed this interpretation. However, if one goes to the site of Divina Records and on to their online "Callas Museum", they will find a live Callas version of this adorable aria (downloadable for free) which makes all other versions truly pale into insignificance.
I usually don't like to hear Renee sing....but this actually sounds very nice. Maybe its a repertoire issue with her. Some things just sound...ugh......But this is great!!!!!
This is joy that fails explanation; so selflessly yet emotionally experiential. At first viewing and listening to this, I was struck at the beginning by the conductor's behavior. I sensed from his appearance that the venue's physical environment was "right" and this was confirmed progressively as the Renee moved toward first interlude. Supported by the fine orchestration, she was then off, radiant, floating, the complete embodiment of what Charpentier saw and felt.. Mon Dieu... I cried.
Very difficult aria to sing--your voice is very exposed--LONG lines. Better have good breath control--which Ms. Fleming has in spades, of course, in addition to her incredible artistry and personal warmth...And she looks like a very nice person too--very un-diva-ish!! Brava!
Renee, sort of owns this song, doesn't she. Magnificent tone, breath control, color, emotion--everything is perfect. Now when are we going to hear the rest of this lovely opera oh Met directors??!!
I cannot stop listening to this aria Renee Fleming is superb and and voice control is so beautiful and so very very polished I have heard many versions but this one is my #1 favorite....o(^▽^)o
Renee Fleming is wonderful in this aria- I find her very convincing in many French opera roles, - the Met should mount this for her- it was once very popular in NY. Gorgeous phrasing and dynamics. brava!
CHORUSINGER, just to say that whit the miriads of singers we have on this planet why quarrel on about there differences, the more the better cio and thanks
chorusinger, the amazing detail that one must pay attention to is her legato supported by her french ,la diction est quasi parfaite, the warm tones in the medzzo part of the aria , yep, indeed merveilleuse, et sans faille.i will just add this i also love almost if not for completly different reason CALLAS VERSION OF THE SAME ARIA ... thanks and are we the luky ones.....
Again, I agree completely. I loved Maria Callas also for many reasons, and her legato was one of them. It seems to me that we are pretty much on the same page, which is quiet refreshing to post, after you read so much bickering about "who is the better soprano, tenor" or any singer for that matter.
I totally agree with you. Renee belongs among all world renowned sopranos, past and present, I think she is that fabulous. There is another recording of her with the same aria. It's on the same page send in by tpham390. She was lots younger there, different in sound, but terrific as well.
Exquisite! Very expressive and sung with such meaning. One of the very best versions you'll find. And it's a beautiful aria as well - a bit of Heaven!
WOOOOOOOOOW! Renee, you by far are the BEST interpreter of this piece. It fits you like a glove. Gosh and what an inspiration to sing with such a supportive orchestra. When you are blessed with such a backing the voice just takes off, become easier to sing on the breath, to project, phrase, the whole ensemble, singer, conductor, orchestra become one instrument.
What makes Fleming the kind of artist she is are her looks and that vocal talent along with her immense intelligence and ability to detach herself from what she does and work it through on a mental plane. It has always been an above-average intellectual intelligence that has turned a great talent into a complete artist e.g Maria Callas, Bevery Sills and Leontyne Price to name just a few. Something people like Netrebko and the like are lacking. Brava Renee!
This version of 'Depuis Le Jour' by Fleming is indeed much slower than many of the greatly famed renditions (i.e. Price). However, Sir, if we were to be technical, Charpentier wanted this particular aria to commence at a tempo of fifty-four to the quarter, gradually increasing throughout the aria, finally returning to a similar tempo. This is the way it is marked in music. If you were to set a metronome to Fleming's rendition, you would see it is much closer to the original tempi intended.
I love Renee singing this, and of course her voice is just fantabulous, but personally, I believe that Maria Callas' version of this aria is to DIEE for.
@roweman2 ah of course callas! no one can compare with her for passion and drama - but fleming's voice is voluptuous and sensual.... i think i hear a touch of the kind of richness i associate with mezzos... there is more joy in fleming's rendition - in callas you can feel the drama, and you feel a little afraid for the future of this young girl's love.... callas makes you listen to what she is singing as well as what she is suggesting. fleming gives us the full impact of this moment of joy.
That's the perfect comment! She is absolutely spectacular when she sings the right stuff. She owns this, Rusalka, and much of the Strauss Lieder. Stay away from Handel Naynay, and just show your best face!
the look on her face is a mix between: " I can do whatever I want with my voice, watch this!" and "this song is amazingly perfect for me me me." I just dont see the innocence of the character. THis Louise has been around the block. Im just being honest. I learn a lot from renee when I watch but I like the met performance of this aria more.
You say: """the look on her face is a mix between: " I can do whatever I want with my voice, watch this!" and "this song is amazingly perfect for me me me." """. This is YOUR impression, she sings thus because she CAN
@rafbilza - In case you do not understand what this aria is all about, Renee is singing about the joys of newfound love - everything has blossomed/ the first kiss/ she is happy / love has extended its wings over her/ the garden of her heart sings a new song/ all is alight with joy/ a charming souvenir of the first day of love/ Ah! I am happy and tremble with delight at the charming memory. ... So Renee has every right to express her joy in such a beautiful melody. It's a masterpiece!
@goldie0800 I agree completely. Well .. My comment is to address someone who said: "the look on her face is a mix between:" I can do whatever I want with my voice, watch this! "and"this song is amazingly perfect for me me me. " As if Fleming's strutting and singing well
About me all is smiles, light and happiness! And I tremble deliciously at the delightful memory of the first day of love! What a glorious life! Oh, how happy I am! Too happy!... And I tremble deliciously at the delightful memory of the first day of love!
Since the day I gave myself, I seem to be dreaming beneath a fairy sky, I seem to be dreaming beneath a fairy sky, by that very first kiss! What a wonderful life! My dream was not a dream! Oh! I am so happy! Love spreads its wings over me! In the garden of my heart a new joy sings! Everything resonates, everything rejoices in my triumph!
Yes all dynamic is respected. Some sopranos famous and fat sing piano when they feel at ease and they don't respect the score. BRAVISSIMA Renée. To note the high B natural when she star singing Pianissimo
but little by little crescendo. This is the score....the real one.
Exquisitely and impossibly lovely. As if it were written for her voice and temperament. It must have been pure delight to have witnessed this performance. What a joy this woman is!
renee is amazing in this aria.i have never heared renee singing so good before.because i thought she was very bad in another aria on youtube : n'est ce plus ma main from manon massenet.but here congratulations renee tou were amazing !
I think she's superb in the full lyric roles. She has a creamy voice that reminds me of Te Kanawa. She should concentrate in the lyric roles more than dramatic. She has unfortunatly been trying more dramtic roles whic is a loss at here lyric beauty.
Just to follow up. As Flemming ages she has even taken on some of the *minor* faults of the aging Price. She occasionally hits a false/flat note right after a gorgeous high note or long held phrase. She at times swoops into pitch as later Price did. But ALSO like later Price, her technique and sound remain relatively unimpigned. I imagine Flemming will be able to sing at 80 with the same quality Price did a few months ago.
I think each artist really has their own vocal qaulities and each interpetation has its own beautiful qaulities. While its true Ms.Leontyne Price has some gorgeous floating qaulities Ms. Fleming makes this her own with her with her intensity and passion. I wish all singers felt every word and showed it with their eyes and technique like she does. So, I think each performer did a beautiful job and each can't really be compared.
Leontyne Price sings this music absolutely wonderfully! However, so does Flemming. If you listen to Flemming she models ALOT of her bluesy, swingy technique on Leontyne and both have preserved their upper range better than ANY sopranos with similar vocal heft. You show a lack of musical history to use one great lady to discredit another. I think these two singers understand this music both. They are not a threat to each other. But rather a compliment. Brava Price AND Flemming!!
Ravishing! She owns this aria. I never thought anyone would sing it more thrillingly than Ileana Cotrubas. It seems as if it were written for her. She soars and rocks!
Is it my problem? I detect Renee's difficulty in reaching some high notes. Also, her voice seems a bit dry. By comparison, Leontyne Price's voice is rich, creamy and effortless in singing this. I don't think this aria is for Renee.
Renee is in my opinion also the best for this aria and in this aria. She doesn't sing it worse than with Levine, but the problem is in this conducter, who doesn't follow her, and she is obligated to sing it differently tahn then. And yes, word perfect is too small for her.
Renee es una gran cantante. Además de una técnica vocal que la hace dueña de un registro homogéneo, tiene el don de expresar sentimientos a través de su voz.
I've heard Renee sing this better, but that being said, this is still a beautiful rendition. Some people who've commented here seem to think that singers are machines, whose voices never change or get affected by Life. Singers at Renee's level travel frequently, perform regularly and are under constant pressure to be "great". Well, I believe that Renee is great, but even more, I believe that she is a true artist.
I am not sure I know what is "cooing flat" that urgrad03 talks about, but it must be something Wonderful! Now I wish I could "coo flat", as she does, all day long!!
Just to add to my previous comment... it's so disappointing to hear someone you've admired so much in the past come to a point where her singing is so off. She's cooing, without doubt. But not only that, she's not making the pitch and considering that poor technique floating a note... float a note if you can and will, but please be sure it's the correct note and not flat, Renee:o/!
Today, I listened this aria sung by Ms. Chikako Osumi at New Tokyo National Theater. Chikako's voice was much more smooth and vivid than Renee Flemming's. Renee's way of singing seems to be a little bit monotonic.
Mother Leontyne comes first, and Renée a close second. Great command of French, amazing breath control, a shimmering timbre that blends sweetly with the lush orchestration. This is probably the most perfect aria for Renée. She made the world sit up and listen spellbound at the Levine Met Gala some years ago. There she goes again! Thanks for posting this!
Does anyone have Ms. Price singing this aria? Renee's intonation is very peculiar, but the B at the end is perfect. Ms. Price (The Queen) is the best I've ever heard sing this aria. If you havn't heard it, make it a priority. I have the audio.
I completely agree!!! What is particularly special about the Price recording of this aria and Ach, ich fuhls is her ability to color the voice to sound like a young girl which- for me- gives real dramatic resonance.

such disparate comments and feelings toward the singer!

Ravishing! She owns this aria. I never thought anyone would sing it more thrillingly than Ileana Cotrubas. It seems as if it were written for her. She soars and rocks!

I'm a Callas fan but Fleming's justification of this aria is just impeccable- great control and intonation!

LEONTYNE PRICE IS DEAD??? Where are you living? There will never be another LEONTYNE PRICE!! I like Renee, but she doesn't come close to Leontyne.
THEMAN200711 4 years ago
Where can we go to listen to her performing LIVE?
She performed in the 50's, 60's and 70's and did a GREAT job, but the life goes on, younger and better singers are coming...
Callas, Leontyne, Sutharland freaks should "open the window"!
God bless Renee Fleming NOW, and in 10-15 years from now there will be someone else. Fact of life!

I just love her!!!!
hwhap13 4 years ago
Is it my problem? I detect Renee's difficulty in reaching some high notes. Also, her voice seems a bit dry. By comparison, Leontyne Price's voice is rich, creamy and effortless in singing this. I don't think this aria is for Renee.
whaleback1 4 years ago
No comparison! Leontyne Price is dead.
Enjoy while you can: Renee is alive and is singing better and better as the years go by.
Cheers

Leontyne Price is not dead.

I think the best version of this aria goes to Dorothy Maynor, then Leontyne.

I wish somebody would post Maynor's version -- I've heard about it, but have never heard it:). Price's version is quite lovely --

The Greatest Artist...

CONTESTAR 4 years ago
Just to add to my previous comment... it's so disappointing to hear someone you've admired so much in the past come to a point where her singing is so off. She's cooing, without doubt. But not only that, she's not making the pitch and considering that poor technique floating a note... float a note if you can and will, but please be sure it's the correct note and not flat, Renee:o/!
urgrad03 4 years ago
Oh no... she's doing that flat cooing here. Check out the Levine gala performance on YouTube (you'll see and hear a difference).

what a pronounciation! in all french divas who sung it, no one managed to have a text that clear... oh dear, i love you

Today, I listened this aria sung by Ms. Chikako Osumi at New Tokyo National Theater. Chikako's voice was much more smooth and vivid than Renee Flemming's. Renee's way of singing seems to be a little bit monotonic.

Um, you're simply wrong!

Montsi and Leontyne just fine... (Montsi screams too much).
But Renee... I doubt anyone will ever sing this aria better than her... the word Perfection is too small for her singing here :)
Lohengrin33 5 years ago
Mother Leontyne comes first, and Renée a close second. Great command of French, amazing breath control, a shimmering timbre that blends sweetly with the lush orchestration. This is probably the most perfect aria for Renée. She made the world sit up and listen spellbound at the Levine Met Gala some years ago. There she goes again! Thanks for posting this!

BRAVA!!! When her voice gets to soar on arias such as this one, magic is made!

listen to Montserrat Caballé's rendition of this aria... then die!
tvtop 5 years ago
who¨s the conductor, listen to the part, "tout se rejouit de mon triomphe", she can¨t hold on the breath, this conductor is killing her!!!
cantanteporsiempre 5 years ago 2
The conductor is Christoph Eschenbach and
he's essentially following her. This is
the same tempo that she took this aria at
the Levine gala at the Met. She likes to
take things very slowly in some pieces and
this just happens to be one of them.

Does anyone have Ms. Price singing this aria? Renee's intonation is very peculiar, but the B at the end is perfect. Ms. Price (The Queen) is the best I've ever heard sing this aria. If you havn't heard it, make it a priority. I have the audio.
gmitch06 5 years ago
I completely agree!!! What is particularly special about the Price recording of this aria and Ach, ich fuhls is her ability to color the voice to sound like a young girl which- for me- gives real dramatic resonance.
