What a wonderful Pooh Bah is Richard McMillan. I was brought up on Kenneth Sandford but RM brings a different dimension to the part - his movement is so amazing and is a refreshing change for a me as a traditionalist.
@oakwoodbank Totally agree - I'm not familiar with any of his other work, but his sense of physical comedy is great in this, and combined with that deadpan-serious expression, he's fall-down-laughing funny
This is great - the cast is outstanding. One quibble with these productions - why was it necessary to add to Sullivan's orchestration. The temple blocks and xylophone add nothing and detract. They did the same thing with their otherwise brilliant production of Iolanthe - the harp makes it almost bearable in places.
Thank you SOOO much for posting this!! I have searched everywhere for this version, and I finally got in on Amazon. Thanks for putting it on here, I think this is the best version.
Love G&S and have to agree this is the best ever. It is, or at least was available on DVD. I had the good fortune of seeing the Stratford performance live in Detroit back in the 80's. I have seen other G&S performed by Stratford as well but none had the genius of this one.
Oh...you should watch the one with Richard Van Allen and Eric Idle. It's not traditional, but it's HYSTERICAL! I know that "I am so proud" is on youtube.
I don't know. No disrespect to Eric Idle (God knows I love him) but this production overall has been the best I've watched. Saks and McMillan are incredible.
I definitely prefer Richard Van Allen better than RIchard McMillan... but I think the most brilliant thing about "I am so proud" in the recording with Van Allne is Pish-Tush--he really milks the role for all its worth. I think it's probably just a matter of taste, but you should definitely check out the other one. Even if you don't like it better, I'm sure you'll enjoy!
Good rendition..and the clothes are right for Japan, too!

To...
Sit in solemn silence in a dull dark dock
in a pestilential prison with a life-long lock
awaiting the sensation of a short sharp shock
from a cheap and chippy chopper on a big black block

@oboewizard I agree. The xylophone is particularly weird.

I had the privelledge of playing Ko-Ko. It's such a great role. Probably one of the best male roles written for stage.

I'd have to say, of all ther versions I've seen of Mikado and this song, this both has the best performence and best costumes.

Very good performance, but I feel the bass (Pooh-bah) sounds more like a barytone.

This version of The Mikado is by far the best version ever.
All other versions on YouTube are EPIC FAILURES.
This is the only one worth watching.
