  • Good rendition..and the clothes are right for Japan, too!

  • Thumbs up if the tall guy kinda scares you

  • I wish "I've got a little list" was posted as well!

  • I actually ran into Richard McMillan today! What a lovely man!

  • The best Poo bah.

  • @Minoushe15 Forget best Poo-bah, they actually have a Pish-tush!

  • To...

Sit in solemn silence in a dull dark dock

in a pestilential prison with a life-long lock

awaiting the sensation of a short sharp shock

from a cheap and chippy chopper on a big black block

  • What a wonderful Pooh Bah is Richard McMillan. I was brought up on Kenneth Sandford but RM brings a different dimension to the part - his movement is so amazing and is a refreshing change for a me as a traditionalist.

  • @oakwoodbank Totally agree - I'm not familiar with any of his other work, but his sense of physical comedy is great in this, and combined with that deadpan-serious expression, he's fall-down-laughing funny

  • This is great - the cast is outstanding. One quibble with these productions - why was it necessary to add to Sullivan's orchestration. The temple blocks and xylophone add nothing and detract. They did the same thing with their otherwise brilliant production of Iolanthe - the harp makes it almost bearable in places.

  • @oboewizard I agree. The xylophone is particularly weird.

  • Bravo!

  • We saw them bring this performance to NYC in the 80's. Just brilliant, and FUNNY!

  • This is amazing

  • I got linked to this when I memorized the "to sit in solem silence..." little bit. I can do it twice in one breath.

  • Best performance I've seen.

  • i was actually at this performance, Allen Stewart-Coates is my Father!

He was as surprised as i was that these videos are on YouTube!

Thanks to those responsible for posting these!

Now, where can we get the entire show???

  • @chrisstewart42 OMG RICHARD MCMILLAN IS MY DAD

  • I had the privelledge of playing Ko-Ko. It's such a great role. Probably one of the best male roles written for stage.

  • I'd have to say, of all ther versions I've seen of Mikado and this song, this both has the best performence and best costumes.

    Thanks for posting

  • I watched this when I was very young but I remembered it and it is honestly the best version I've ever seen. So well done.

  • Loved this since I was little....ah, such good memories!

  • Mcmillan as Poo-Bah is hilarious!

  • Thank you SOOO much for posting this!! I have searched everywhere for this version, and I finally got in on Amazon. Thanks for putting it on here, I think this is the best version.

  • gah, this all just looks so fun. words cannot describe my love for G & S

  • It's just so good. I don't think I could ever get sick of watching this.

  • Very good performance, but I feel the bass (Pooh-bah) sounds more like a barytone.

  • Love G&S and have to agree this is the best ever. It is, or at least was available on DVD. I had the good fortune of seeing the Stratford performance live in Detroit back in the 80's. I have seen other G&S performed by Stratford as well but none had the genius of this one.

  • This version of The Mikado is by far the best version ever.

All other versions on YouTube are EPIC FAILURES.

This is the only one worth watching.

  • Oh...you should watch the one with Richard Van Allen and Eric Idle. It's not traditional, but it's HYSTERICAL! I know that "I am so proud" is on youtube.

  • @gamgee87

I don't know. No disrespect to Eric Idle (God knows I love him) but this production overall has been the best I've watched. Saks and McMillan are incredible.

  • I definitely prefer Richard Van Allen better than RIchard McMillan... but I think the most brilliant thing about "I am so proud" in the recording with Van Allne is Pish-Tush--he really milks the role for all its worth. I think it's probably just a matter of taste, but you should definitely check out the other one. Even if you don't like it better, I'm sure you'll enjoy!

  • @gamgee87 whoa dere that's my dad you're talking about

  • Can you post the entire thing? I once had this on video tape, but it is long since ruined. This has always been my favorite version.

  • this is one of my favorites. ever.

  • The Best Mikado ever!
