@dundonrl F-14 should never have been discontinued. Faster and cooler looking than the F-18 and if i'm not wrong it can carry a much higher payload. Sure it was aging but it was still a great aircraft!

I understand what you are saying, because it was a great aircraft, but it was also supposed to be doing ground attack and it wasn't configured for that until the end of its service life. The Hornet is more capable and much cheaper to keep in the air.
