That's really a black rat snake. Eastern kings have solid white bands going around them instead of those little white specks. Rat snakes also have a checkered belly like that one had.
@Snakesrock15 it actually IS a Black Kingsnake. Black Kings are a subspecies of the Eastern King. Black Kings are almost solid black on top, with faint speckling on the sides, whereas Eastern Kings have a distinctive 'chain' pattern running the length of the body. Black Rats and Black Kings could be confused because Black Rats do have some white appearing between their scales, but Kings are a more 'cylindrical' bodied snake while Rats are like a loaf of bread in cross-section.
@Snakesrock15 ;) no worries. i can understand for more than one reason how the 2 could be confused. they look kinda similar, at least from the dorsal view sometimes. and the scientific names are pretty close, too - 'nigra' and 'nigrita'.
The ones around my house are either very skittish and run away, or they shake their tail in the grass to make you think they're a rattlesnake. I've never seen one to be feisty like that one!
So do snakes like to sneak into houses? Last night I went into my parents bathroom and there was a black snake with it looked like a white patch on its back. It was pretty think and long. It was just sitting there. I didn't get the best look at it seeing as I'm terrified of snakes and I spent most of the time crying lol. But this has happened twice. Not in the same year but still. Is that odd???
King Snakes are the ones that you want around; too bad that not too many people know the difference between them and poisonous snakes :(. The black one's are my favourite; there's a huge one that comes up my driveway every now and then; he's pretty calm and collected, he even let's me pet him for a while when he comes to visit and he'll stay by my side until I leave :)
@ez2ciwin I live in SC and you can find them in some pet stores (I've seen several). You could also catch a king snake because they tend to become accustomed to being pets fairly well as opposed to other snakes (only recommended if you know what you are doing). If you are looking to buy a snake in SC though lots of places carry corn snakes and Ball pythons which are both pretty good options.
we call those guys black snakes, or black ret snakes.....are they really considered king snakes? if you google images for 'common black snake maryland' you'll see the same snake i am pretty sure.
@reptilewranglers thanks, good to know. i had known for years that they ate other snakes, but i just thought they ate whatever they could catch and overpower.
kings are not to be played with, the ones here in KY will eat you alive. I got one out of a corn crib once and I lost count on how many times it bit me lol
Cool find man, honestly i thought it was a black rat too but a closer look he absolutely has the thick kingsnake neck and fat face like the kings. keep the vids comin man
This definitely a black rat snake. Even the strike position is all rat snake. The banding pattern may make you think king snake, but compare it to the gray rat snake and you will see.
2 thumbs up for not handling the snake in front of the camera and stressing it out. always nice to have shots of the animal as they are. I know it's hard to resist handling them. good to see Kings in Indiana
strange, i live up in vermont saw a snake exactly like that, had the checkered belly too, i thought it was a black ratsnake, but i cant see how a king snake would be up north where i am. i have a california king snake also
5 Stars Dude! I love king snakes. We just get rattle snakes here, but then again, I don't go looking for them, they just come up on us. They're AWESOME just the same! That was a gorgeous King!
well suprisingly i never see anything over here in cali( i moved here 6 months ago). ive seen a DOR glossy snake, a couple striped racers, and a southern pacific rattlesnake. i go hiking every morning, and the day before yesterday i heard a rattlesnake in the brush, and then my bro and mom heard it on the way back. but compared to florida, this is practically nothing compared to what i caught everyday :(
That is an awesome snake. All we have are garden snakes and racers here in south BC its lame!

looks like a black rat snake, we get those up here. the only dif is that the rat snake has alternating back and white belly, king snakes don't.

It talks about a new bill called HR669
If this bill is passed not only will it ban parrots reptiles but it will ruin the economy even more.
Help out, watch the video and copy and paste this comment on other videos to help the bill NOT pass
