  • In this day and age, I'd rather make concessions for a season-long dream from one of THE greatest television shows in history than sit through the nightmare that are the reality show abominations that are rapidly killing television! The Bachelor/Bachelorette, Real Housewives of ___, Big Rich Texas, Jersey Shore, Jerseylicious, anything Kardashian, Hoarders, Teen Mom, 16 & Pregnant, all the sickening list goes on and on and on... I would take a post-dream 'Dallas' in a heartbeat!!

  • The dream season was number 6 in the ratings, the following season fell to number 11 and the show continued to fall. The quality of the show nose dived after the dream season. Phil Capice had a difficult job producing a season without Patrick but he kept the show in the top 10, something that did not happen after his forced departure and the return of Bobby. The show became a parody with the fake Jock story line, the forced departure of Susan Howard, and Pam's less than dignified departure.

  • It would have been far better for them to keep Bobby in a coma during the entire season and then have him wake up the next season. If Duffy didn't return they could have killed off Bobby then. Duffy has even admitted in an interview with Wogan that his decision to leave the show was dumb.

  • This is why, especially on soap operas, when you kill somebody off, don't leave a body for us to see. Have them die in a plane crash, fall off a cliff, perish in a fire, etc. This way, you can always bring them back without making it too tricky.

  • so a evil twin is ridiculas but a dream season makes sence...yeah right. Hell they had a fake Jock Ewing (which was a great story) so why not a evil double for Bobby Ewing.

  • Bobby should have been rescued and saved by B&B's Prince Omar ! ;-)

  • My soloution - keep it a dream but Bobby's coma induced dream. dream season ends with us seeing Pam walking in a hospital room and kissing Bobby' whilst in his coma. The next season opener explains Bobby been in a coma for an hour and Pam has been visiting him eveyday and talking to him. The best story lines of the dream season can be kept and explained as Bobby dreaming what Pam was telling him. The season opener could also of used flashback scenes to fill in the gaps of the past year. Fi

  • @ajb1tic1tac Sounds good. 1 basic problem with that, though: Knots Landing acknowledged Bobby's death too

  • @tabbypappy Exactly. And how could Pam be telling Bobby what was going on in Knots Landing? With the exception of Gary & Valene, Pam never met any of those people.

  • @ajb1tic1tac Absolutely perfect! Your solution was great in that it makes sense while giving acknowledgement to what happened that season. A wonderful scenario. What should have been.

  • So why did Patrick Duffy leave the series in the first place? If the guy wanted a break then request one but to allow the character to be killed off then somehow return him was ludicrous. Other factors were also happening which explained the ratings decline of Dallas. TV viewers (particularly females) were tuning into the more camp Dynasty with its high priestess of bitchiness, Alexis Carrington. Obviously the producers of Dallas panicked, how else to explain the introduction of Angelica Nero.

  • Thank you for sending this clip to me.In my opinion season 8 was the bomb. Ray & Donna adopted a son and was happy together. Sue Ellen hitting rock bottom not to mention blown to hell, lol.. I loved Patrick's character of course and glad he returned but lost interest in Dallas season 9. I caught the season 9 and till the finish on Soapnet reruns in late 90's..

  • @RememberingKnots It's so strange when we get caught up in these story lines that it can make us crazy with some of the choices they made, for instance Knots Landing, loosing characters, Laura, Lilimae, Ben, almost the same year and then adding strange characters to upset the flow..lol... Oh yea then the worse, loosing the character Abby... Well this was about Dallas I totally turned it..lol... Thank you again for sharing with me. Jim

  • I can think of a much better way than a dream. From when he was a senator they should have made a way where the gobverment had to make it loook like bobby was killed to protct himself and his family from the mob or something. all ij all the dream idea was not too bad..

  • I agree that if they were going to bring Bobby back, that a dream was really the only way they could do it, but at the same time, the show really lost a lot when they did that. It lost it's credibility with the fans and it was never the same the last few seasons.

  • The show jumped the shark with the way they brought Bobby back, and it messed up the "Knots Landing" story line as well.

  • @vccstudents Precisely. I don't remember seeing Gary Ewing on Southfork after this.

  • @tabbypappy You don't remember because he never was unless you want to count JR's dream in the last episode.

  • @vccstudents

    It jumped when bobby "died"

  • They should have had Katherine fake her death in the car rundown and bribe the hospital staff to fake Bobby's death, and she could have held him captive for a year, make him be her sex slave or whatever, then he escapes and crashes Pam and Mark's wedding. Whatever it took to keep Katherine on the show, she was great.

  • Stranger things have happened in programmes since and many are actually copying this sort of idea now. This was in no way the worst idea. Sad to see some of the good elements of the dream go though.

  • One possibility was to say that Bobby didn't really die, that he wasn't really that seriously injured but the hospital staff drugged him and told him he and his family that he was dying because they were bribed, let's say by Jeremy Wendell, to take over Ewing Oil. Wendell's people then held Bobby captive for most of the next season. Bobby escapes late in the season and makes an appearance at Mark and Pam's wedding.

  • Perhaps they could have had Bobby emerge from a coma ... then you could possibly keep some of the story lines from the previous season. Some were worth keeping.

  • Whatever the feelings are/were, We still have a connection to the Ewing Family which means they were an awesome bunch. PPL never cared about the characters on the other soaps but DALLAS was THE show that started it all and speaks volumes.

  • There was no other way to bring him Back! So real fans had to make concessions.

  • Interesting but I still don't agree with the 'dream solution.' There were other options. The writers chose a cop out and it permanantly damaged the credibility of the show.

  • jksonny, I agree that the writers chose cop out and it permanantly damaged the credibility of the show. I liked a lot of storylines during the infamous dream season minus Angelica and the mineral minds storylines.

  • Great video clip. This documentary made you stop and think about the dream season and the dream solution. Can you PLEASE more of this documentary?

  • Great video clip. I really enjoyed this documentary about how they justified the dream solution.
