hey jack remember when you said to rince the knife? when you use the the blade for the scissor and the last knife wont the the metal shaving get on food when you use it over the cutting borde
The Santa Ana joke was the best joke you've ever made!! I literally laughed out loud, very loudly in fact!! I think it's something only us Southern California people understand, soooo funny!!
you know, in the commercial, see when the person is cutting a sponge you can see that person used the BACKside of the knife for the first attempt then turned the knife around while the hand was out of the screen and then cut the sponge
jack, if you want to learn about sharpening search "cutlerylover spyderco sharpmaker" he teaches you how to use one of the best sharpening systems around. Every chef needs to know his knife. Also, stay away from these types of carbide sharpeners, they tear off metal from the blade roughly and don't give you a great edge. Nothing beats free hand sharpening. At the very least get a $5 sharpening stone, anything is better than this cheese.
You should never use this kind of sharpener on your knives, they scrape away a lot of steel and makes your knife last a lot shorter. Just buy a cheap dual side stone wit one coarse side and one fine side, and do a coulple of passes on it with each side of the knife.
my mom and i were watching this and the "concern" you have, mom says it's normal. when you sharpen a knife you are taking a whole side off. so the shavings on the shark is normal. that's just what my mom said
@jakatak69 Ha ha, thought you were gonna say something else. "tell your mom fk off!" jk. Love your vids man. i just got engaged so i need to learn to cook with my future child.
Unbelievable. Pay $12 and vandalise your knives. As the presenter said at the end, do not use this on good knives, see a professional sharpener and ask first. Watch their face as you show them the sharpener, and be prepared for a genuinely horrified response.
Billy mays was almost always on point with the things he was hired to promote/sell rumor is he wouldnt take the job if the product was junk or didnt work for the sake of his name ....rip Billy mays
@jakatak69 Better for your knife would be using a ceramic sharpener. If you don't wanna fork out a load of money for a good ceramic use the bottom of a good coffee mug! You'd be surprised how well it works, when I say a good coffee mug I mean make sure the bottom is very smooth ceramic with no chips or dirt. These special sharpeners usually remove a lot of metal from the blade edge, quite often changing the blade profile.
Sorry Jack. I have my knives picked up by the local knife company rep and they hone 'em for free. If need be, they'll regrind the bevel, then re-edge and hone 'em.
BTW, I have my initials stamped on all the blades near the hilt, so I can say there's never been any "knife swaping" going on by the company. ;-)
The Shark looks like something I'd get for all my el cheepo knives I have around, so I'll pick one up for them. :-)
On the serrated blade I saw you only did one side, if the scallops on the serrations are on both sides you should do it on both sides or your going to kill the bevel on the blade.
its good stuff i know i use it for getting my knife ready ... its more like a wisker but it trap the blade in it .. remember those witshire stay sharp knife that comme with a stand for the knife .. thats the same thing and remember what appened with those old knifes they where off after a wild ... so one piece of advise with knife is always buy them in double and use a soft surface that will not damage your edge ..
weird if you see the commercial when he tries to cut the sponge. 1st cut he presses down the sponge but the 2nd time he doesn't. thats a trick to buy the product
Hey there Jack! I was on the edge of my chair hoping you wouldn't cut yourself. You didn't though, thank goodness. I would like to see a review on the OrGREENic pans. Aparently nothing will stick to them and you don't have to use and oils or butter. For some reason I don't believe it's possible. Lol. :)
Jack, buddy, I am SOOOO proud of you! I practically held my breath through this whole episode, just waiting for you to lose a finger or something. But you did GREAT! :D WOOHOO!!! Also, it was a very good review. You used the sharpener on a good variety of blades, you used the blades on a variety of thicknesses and textures......very informative. I'm actually thinking about picking one up, so I can slice up some veggies for some Brunswick stew! ;)
Just a thing that everybody should know, only sharpen your knives once every 6-12 months depending on the quality of the knife and if you use proper technique, because every time you sharpen it you lose a little bit of the edge and after some time it can render your knife useless, also most of the times people think their knives are dull, they aren't the edge is only bent so you are better off honing the blade.
BTW Jack have you tried a ceramic knife? It works wonders and never gets dull. =D
Hi Jack! I have an idea for the 100th episode. Chicago Style Hot Dogs! I saw a vid on Youtube and I made one myself, I must say it is quite tasty! Different as well. Check it out there are videos of it everywhere.
Also I noticed in another of your vids that you preferred that knife at 9:40 It's because of its serrations. When people have dull knives, they find that they always have to slice rather than cut. Serrated blades were designed for that purpose. Plain blades though are designed for shearing cuts and a bit of slicing and push cutting. Straight edge blades are designed for push cutting. Thus normal people prefer serrated blades to, say, an usuba because the usuba wasn't made for slicing.
The samurai shark takes advantage of people's gullibility. It will get your knives kinda sharp but not to the razor sharpness as shown in the commercial. It will be sharp enough to get your knife to cut through most things with enough effort but never to the point of being able to push cut. You'll always be stuck slicing and thus your cutting will always be slow. Considering you seem to be into culinary, I'd suggest you start learning how to sharpen knives on a stone/sandpaper.
Oh Jak, another thing about in the PM when you look in the magnification, that's after cleaning it. Those little teeth can easily break off, and you'll be eating small pieces of metal with your food. A properly honed blade will have almost a mirror finish on the edge, and one way to tell when you have a really sharp knife, is the edge should feel "sticky" almost. Like it bites into your skin.
Thanks for showing my omelet! It would be neat if you compared this to a "regular" knife sharpener to see if it works any better. I am also curious about the ware on the knife after frequent use.
if you keep using that jak it will eventually stuff up your knife not only are you getting wrong angles you are lossing metel everytime you do that and also will make you wanna keep sharping more offen and Thor Maxx its a honing steel which is used for just that honing. not sharpening just honing. for all anyone who wants good sharpening system and very easy to use and cheap google in Spyderco 204MF Tri-Angle Sharpmaker System or check on youtube for some videos great product Spyderco 204MF
With the steak knife test I almost exited the video because I've used the same cheap dull paring knife I bought from wally world for 4 years now and it's not that hard! Just poke the skin of the tomato with the point and then cut!
Hey jack, greetings from Miami! I went once to sacramento, california as well as san fransisco. in san fransisco there is this burger chain called red robin's. They are amazing and im dying to go there again. the only problem is that its far away. It would be a good jack-on-the-go show if you havent gone there thanks!
just one comment, i know this is just a demonstration, but sharpening the blades over the cutting area kinda defeats the purpose of rinsing the metal filings off the blade afterward
@aric126 yeah. pretty stupid of me. I was told that by a few people. Normally I do it over the sink but I was filming so I stayed in front of the camera. sorry.
Jack: The shavings are essential for sharpening. Sharpening is basically, creating a new blade for the knife, because the blade originally on it has corroded, or acid has eaten it. If it is bent, Then you would use the steel blade ting (called a "Honing steel") to place it back into place. But the shavings are definitely supposed to be there, and is perfectly normal. Besides, knives aren't supposed to last your whole lifetime.
@smartcheetah1 you poured the eggs in to fast which cooked the eggs and the rice should not have sticked together at all unless you weren't stirring constantly. Try tempering the eggs in next time. This is when you take a bowl of rice pudding from the pot. Blend the eggs into that bowl mixture first then put the whole bowl mix back into the pot with the rest. This is called tempering. That should blend your eggs better.
@death8796 I will look at it. That's why I mentioned the warning for people to consult with their local knife store. Does it work? yes. Is it good for high end knives? I wasn't sure.
aww i miss the days when i would watch my tv guide channel to see what was on and hearing BILLY MAYS HERE WITH MIGHTY PUTTY now i have to listen to vince offer
Jack, are you no longer affiliated with the Best Sauces? I've noticed your apron is either turned around or a different one without the logo, and you don't have the commercial in your show anymore. Either way, I love the videos. Next time I make my spaghetti sauce I will have to take pictures and share them with you.
@azbobbybooshay10 I don't promote the sauces all the time. viewers will get irritated. I own the company, so I am not leaving the best sauces soon. :D
Man I love your vids Jack, its just a shame that we don't get like 80% of the products here in the UK... but then we have Irn Bru so I guess its a fair trade lol
Don't let one person stop you from doing your "regular guy" product reviews Jack. I find them all entertaining, useful, and informative, becuase a lot of stuff you get comes off the TV, and a lot of times its hit or miss, but it looks like the Samurai Shark is a winner.
@22694nayeem really? I have only mentioned that on 10 different episodes. I will be doing an episode on Knife skills where someone will teach me and everyone else how to use a knife properly.
i have used pocket knives with this with good results. i used to do it wrong and thought it didn't work but this video helped. thanks

Jack, are you no longer affiliated with the Best Sauces? I've noticed your apron is either turned around or a different one without the logo, and you don't have the commercial in your show anymore. Either way, I love the videos. Next time I make my spaghetti sauce I will have to take pictures and share them with you.
azbobbybooshay10 1 year ago
@azbobbybooshay10 I don't promote the sauces all the time. viewers will get irritated. I own the company, so I am not leaving the best sauces soon. :D
look forward to pics. thanks.

Don't let one person stop you from doing your "regular guy" product reviews Jack. I find them all entertaining, useful, and informative, becuase a lot of stuff you get comes off the TV, and a lot of times its hit or miss, but it looks like the Samurai Shark is a winner.

maybe you should clean your knifes bevore sharpening them..

22694nayeem 1 year ago
@22694nayeem really? I have only mentioned that on 10 different episodes. I will be doing an episode on Knife skills where someone will teach me and everyone else how to use a knife properly.
jakatak69 1 year ago
@jakatak69 looking forward to it!
22694nayeem 1 year ago
those people in this commercial-vid are so funny haha.. i bet they have never used a knife before
zastyla 1 year ago
Those Sharpening tools arent bad. But please NEVER use them on high quality knives.
You definately gonna chip the edge of the blade. For most people its not obvious, but if your a "knive freak" like me, you gonna notice that.
Only sharpen those with a knive sharpening stone.
Also never use the rods for real high quality knives.
High quality starts for me at 80USD for one knive !
I can't do a video of how to use the rod and the stone, but want some pictures jack?
