I am a history major and have taken courses is History of Early Christianity and Religious Diversity In the U.S. The history of all major religions is fascinating, the factual history. Not what they state is their history but what they've actually done. I don't need to be a devout member of these religions to judge them. I only have to look at what they have done and continue to do. P.S. I grew up Catholic.
Being a history major is a far cry from what it takes to being able to understand religion. I was once agnostic as theoretical physics major until I started my second major, philosophy. I became christian after I had done some philosophical theology, much of theology has been lost to anyone outside it's discipline.

Actually catholics never considered the earth flat. I mean it was just another theory that it held out of a number of different scientific theories and this theory was equal to the theory of the earth being round.
And in addition, beyond those 2 official declarations, there would be a mountain of investigation from all angles religious or otherwise and by the time they would want to declare it 'fit for the faithful', it would be another 50 years gone by, as evidenced by a simple example of canonisation of saints.
Maher shld have re-checked his sources, or perhaps, it was an intended tv parody fit for the average joes and janes.
If it was an approval from the Vatican, there would be a Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur, official declaration of a phenomena/event being recognised as valid in the eyes of the Church but there's none other than comments from a Vatican News agency made in their personal capacity. And the Pope hasn't even come out with it, so what's the big fuss? Pious private declarations do not amount to an official Church approval.
