To answer your question about what Sonic's world is and where it is.

The Sonic comics and earlier Sonic games depicted Sonic on Mobius; an 'Earth' that is in an alternate dimension from our own 'Earth'. Instead of humans, they have anthropomorphic animals like Sonic, and then there's Eggman/Robotnik also. The comics go REALLY in depth about it and create a whole multi-verse out of it. Then as Sonic games become more modern, it's more common to say he and his friends are just on Earth.
