The great Louie Bellson on drums for this event, must have been an honor to play with Benny. Louie's playing a little subdued since this is Benny's band and music and not him leading his own big band. Would have loved for him and the band to have played Sing, Sing, Sing.
I think as many people do, 60-80's are the best years and never be the same.. also people who lived in these years are the luckiest ones and now, the miserable ones can feed their souls from there.. Thank God, there is Music..!
Damn...... I played the trumpet and clarinet all through junior high, high school and into college. Played in a jazz band for a few years but man I could NEVER play like Benny.....
Really love that "big band" sound! What a delight to hear music of this quality. Just grand; I also love all the footage of the orchestra, naturally, but also of all those people dancing and having a great time. Thanks for the post. :)
@saltyblond95 Because this music--and this bandleader and drummer--date back to the 30s, when these "old people" were young, probably teenagers. I don't know your age, but when you're in your 60s or 70s and go to see some group or artist you currently like in 2010 perform (if they're still around then), then you'll be an "old person" at their concert. And someone who'll be your age all those years from now (who's not born yet) will probably ask "What's with all the old people?"
@SONOR4 Even though removed, your comment is appreciated. The "old people" in this video are/were part of the generation that took a stand against both Communism and the Nazis. They made America and the world a far better place than it would've been otherwise. Someone's gotta take up for 'em.
Doesn't get much better than to have Louie Bellson on drums for this gig. Playing a little subdued because Benny is the leader and this is his music, and not Louie playing with his own big band. Shows that you can swing and not have to be spectacular.
Benny's original recording of this song went to number one in the first week in April 1938 (in record sales, juke box plays and radio station requests). Great piece for Lindy Hop/Swing like the dancers do on BigBandsAlive

I really love jizz. Benny Goodman was by far the master of jizz, and swung around with jizz and made great things out of it. When people saw him and his men play, they had probably never heard of anyone doing the things that he did with jizz. I write this as a tribute to the master of jizz.
ahhhhh...benny goodman is my hero...and rolll model...every picture you see of him with his clarinet you can see happiness in his eyes....this is only 8 months before he did....and look how happy he is.....I LOVE YOU BENNY GOODMAN !!!! ...i would give anything to get to meet him
Good musicianship is never out of fashion and these guys swing like mad in what is a 1930s arrangement. BG is as magnificent as ever. Saw him playing classical at Snape Maltings along time ago and that was awesome too.
@nrlsky Of course: The signature tune is in E flat major; Then the Don't Be That Way is: D flat major, F major (clarinet solo), A flat major (next chorus with trombone solo) and finally D natural! major (last chorus and ending). Do you have(play in) a band? I can make an arrangement for you, not expensive, sounding just like them. Am a retired professional.
These recordings are, in my opinion, some of the best BG has ever made. This band is unbelievable - tight, exceptionally accurate, swings like hell - no wonder BG applauds them! What an evening it must have been. Does anybody know where I can get a copy of a DVD of this concert?
awesome. yeah I play death and black metal but my heart is in jazz. i really love the swing kings dorsey, goodman, miller, etc., but louis armstrong and bix biederbecke from the 20s/30s will blow your mind. intense shit that no one had ever heard before that time. unlike most music these days.
Hey Ulysses61 are you an idiot or what!!! This aint swingin? You think Mr . Goodman didn't pick these guys or at least check them out? Oh another thing don't ever say Mr Bellson don't swing. Dummy!!!!!
Anyone who knocks this band, obviously is not a musician. Some great players, Dick Hyman, Bob Haggart and Randy Sandke still one of the best trumpeters today.
Check out the piano players name in the video description. Dick Hyman? Man what an unfortunate name. Oh yea, and Benny is the poop! I just wish I could have seen him preferably at the 1938 Carnagie Hall concert. I would give anything to have been there.
For the Benny newbies posting here.. though Benny was still great here, the band was abysmal. If you want to hear PRIME Benny Gooman, check out his mid-30's band with Harry James, Ziggy Elman, Teddy Wilson and Gene Krupa. The musicians here are awful with the exception of Benny himself.
Wow what a band, i think one of the best in BG's long career. Just the rhythm section is a thrill, there must be 1000 years of experience sitting together on this stage. Luckily i had the chance to see BG in a concert in the start of the 80s, even not with such a big band.
I would have loved to meet benny goodman. especially when he was younger kuz i thot he was cute am i the only one who thinks he was cute when he was young?
Just listen to this....it is unbelieveably wonderful to hear REAL MUSIC in an age of utter garbage.
