Hmm well, there's this whole uproar going on over here about lipsynching. Is it even bad in the first place? Mariah has definitely proven that she can sing, and sing in a stellar manner. She has put up august performances before, eg. MTV Awards, Grammy Awards, Oprah's show, etc. So she lipsynches. Tell me why that's bad, I don't exactly comprehend. Lipsynching does not make a singer "fake", and it certainly doesn't mean Mariah is mendacious, since obviously it's been proven she isn't.

There was clearly something up with her on canadian idol. It was the same time she was on antibiotics... maybe she was in a TON of pain? they may have given her a sedative too to help the pain (certain sedatives that help nerve pain also cause lethargy)... think about it
She looks lost, tired and bored. The E=Mc2 Era was weird because in alot of her interviews she seemed so out of it that it looks like she OD on meds or something.
I love Mariah, and WBT is definitely my favourite song by her, but what happened at the end??? That was horrible. It looked like she was in pain and really struggling to get out those notes! She didn't seem very attentive either. She looked really tired and bored. Not a very good debut for Canada :P

Of course her voice has changed. She's getting older, like anyone else. But the best thing is that she knows how to work with her voice so that each of her fans or anyone listening to her music has to admire it. I used to wish to hear her singing "Without you" even just once but that's almost impossible ^^ Still love her voice and songs!!!

Voice change, yes. However, with proper care, your voice shouldn't deteriorate as much as to what's Mariah's voice presently. An example? Patti Labelle. At 60, she still has the power when she was in her prime.

You have so much to learn. If you use the whistle register properly, it will not damage your vocal chords. Without proper training, even when you are singing in your comfortable range i.e. middle range can still damage your voice. Mariah didn't do anything that can damage the voice except for the fact that she didn't rest at all from 1990-1995 and her I'm not sure what it was.. Daydream Tour? just did it.

MC's not young anymore, so she definitely cannot sing as beautifully as she used to at her 24. She herself admits that she still feels a little embarrassed whenever she sings live!!! I think she does what she's best at in the best way and she deserves what her fans save for her!!!
As i've noticed, people with husky low voice can be a really good singer with wide-ranging vocal. I like listening to husky voice, by the way coz it sounds warm. I love MC either when she speaks or sing. Nobody can get better.

Shes been lipsynching the harder parts since 2000, since her really severe deterioration started around that year. She has nodules and the more you sing with them, the more difficult is to control the voice. That is why she uses other takes that didnt make it on the album so people think its live. So her capability of belting those notes live is very debatable, she had great performances like the one with John Legend or You and I, though.
Notes in the 4th pctave would be her middle range why? She can go down to G#2 to the 6th octave. As well as this, most female vocalists also have this octave as their middle range. It seems like A4 is not in Mariah's middle range because her body movements and facial expressions make it that way.
On a very very good day she wil be able to hit A5 lol.
Of course, if she lost her voice completely she would be mute. Any notes outside her speaking range are gone, thats all. Thats why she has to go from the "growl" sound to reach some higher notes.
In 1997 its where her SEVERE deterioration started. If you listen closely to her records in order, you can hear that her struggles tarted in late 1994.
Its called otorhinolaryngologist. Its not crazy how fast it deteriorated. It would be crazy if she hadnt had the nodules. As I said before, her voice first experienced struggles in late 94. You actually listen how her voice changed gradually through the years. And then you are singing with nodules, your singing is not healthy. You can have all the technique in the world, but you will always be strained. The more she sings the more the nodules damage her voice.
Mariah is not hiding a medical condition. All that deterioration are normal symtoms of vocal nodules, thats all. Specially if she never removed them. ALso she is aging so that is also a factor.
Yes, she does love her music, you can tell when you listen to any of her songs. And it is really really sad and tragic what happened to her voice. And all the crazy fans say "ohh, you are a hater, ohh you are jelous"

On her latests albums shes been composing songs that are even more difficult to sing than her previous work. The new Memoirs album is composed and arranged in a more appropriate key. I dont care how succesful she is, I just care about an honest artist instead of a fraud.

One thing she does is singing the song in a lower key and then the sound engineer raises the key (song Mine Again)

She did it also on the Butterfly tour. And from that moment on its been bigger and bigger. Vocal rest only delays the consequences, the ultimate solution is surgery.
About what you said that maybe the doctors butchered the job, I honestly dont think so. If you listen to all of her albums, from the first to the last, you can notice some vocal changes even in Music Box, even though they were small changes, they are still evident. For example, on Musix Box you can hear her voice crack and sometimes sound strained. Same on the Xmas album. The thing is that the big change was around the time of the Butterfly tour.
It was a slow process. But year by year you can listen the difference. Even if you watch performances from the Musix Box era, you can see that she strains a lot more compared to earlier performances, for example performances of Anytime you need a friend, without you and hero. The belting is different, it sounds more strained and actually you can notice the strain in her face and body inflections.
All those little changes in her voice that you've noticed might be related to her nodules but the drastic change happened in1997. That makes me think that maybe around that time she had a surgery gone bad... I mean how is it that whithin less than a year her voice all but dissapeared? I think this was the real reason for her so called breakdown in 2001. She's been acting all slutty and crazy since her voice deteriorated. Did she lose her mind along with her voice?

In We Belong Together, everything is lipped except for the very end when she belts. You can tell at 7:43 when the track almost goes off, it's clearly lip synched. She's trying to save her voice for the end, but it didn't go that great...
She is definately lipping I'm That Chick, but you can tell that she's not lipping We Belong Together. If you listen to any of her recent songs in this time then you can tell that she has the breathy parts of it right. The last part of We Belong Together is definately live, it didn't sound all that because of her belting. Her belting is getting MUCH better than what it was and I think that her belting being much higher than normal caused the rough ending of We Belong Together. [My suspicision]

There was clearly something up with her on canadian idol. It was the same time she was on antibiotics... maybe she was in a TON of pain? they may have given her a sedative too to help the pain (certain sedatives that help nerve pain also cause lethargy)... think about it

I love Mariah, and WBT is definitely my favourite song by her, but what happened at the end??? That was horrible. It looked like she was in pain and really struggling to get out those notes! She didn't seem very attentive either. She looked really tired and bored. Not a very good debut for Canada :P
I've watched many performances of her do this song so I know she can do it much better, but everyone is allowed an off day :)

Of course her voice has changed. She's getting older, like anyone else. But the best thing is that she knows how to work with her voice so that each of her fans or anyone listening to her music has to admire it. I used to wish to hear her singing "Without you" even just once but that's almost impossible ^^ Still love her voice and songs!!!

Voice change, yes. However, with proper care, your voice shouldn't deteriorate as much as to what's Mariah's voice presently. An example? Patti Labelle. At 60, she still has the power when she was in her prime.

You have so much to learn. If you use the whistle register properly, it will not damage your vocal chords. Without proper training, even when you are singing in your comfortable range i.e. middle range can still damage your voice. Mariah didn't do anything that can damage the voice except for the fact that she didn't rest at all from 1990-1995 and her I'm not sure what it was.. Daydream Tour? just did it.
I'm only a fan of her vocal abilities not her music. =/

MC's not young anymore, so she definitely cannot sing as beautifully as she used to at her 24. She herself admits that she still feels a little embarrassed whenever she sings live!!! I think she does what she's best at in the best way and she deserves what her fans save for her!!!

Shes been lipsynching the harder parts since 2000, since her really severe deterioration started around that year. She has nodules and the more you sing with them, the more difficult is to control the voice. That is why she uses other takes that didnt make it on the album so people think its live. So her capability of belting those notes live is very debatable, she had great performances like the one with John Legend or You and I, though.

Notes in the 4th pctave would be her middle range why? She can go down to G#2 to the 6th octave. As well as this, most female vocalists also have this octave as their middle range. It seems like A4 is not in Mariah's middle range because her body movements and facial expressions make it that way.
On a very very good day she wil be able to hit A5 lol.

Its called otorhinolaryngologist. Its not crazy how fast it deteriorated. It would be crazy if she hadnt had the nodules. As I said before, her voice first experienced struggles in late 94. You actually listen how her voice changed gradually through the years. And then you are singing with nodules, your singing is not healthy. You can have all the technique in the world, but you will always be strained. The more she sings the more the nodules damage her voice.

I'd have to agree, her career is technically short, and her voice gave out so fast. But all that belting, and recording and the constant use of the whistle register helped none with maintaining her once VERY strong chest voice. I feel bad.. Hopefully this coming album that she will be releasing will have some better or stronger peformances than the E-Mc2 era.

Its been like almost 10 years that Mariah cannot sing her songs completely live, and thats one of the reasons that people and the industry dont respect her. Plus the image that she wants to show to the public. Until 1998 she was an adult singer, from then on she has become this teenager who refuses to grow up. The main issue here is that she tries to fool the industry and the public by lipsynching the difficult parts of her songs, as she refuses to accept the fact that she cannot sing like she used to. On her latests albums shes been composing songs that are even more difficult to sing than her previous work. The new Memoirs album is composed and arranged in a more appropriate key. I dont care how succesful she is, I just care about an honest artist instead of a fraud.

Since she has lost her voice she has refused to be honest about it and chooses to tweak her voice in the studio. The first time I noticed her doing the half&half thing was in 1997 on the British "Top Of The Pops" where she was promoting her first "Butterfly" single "Honey" and then she pulled the same trick at the World Music Awards and then at the Nobel Prize Concert she lipped both "My All" and "Butterfly."

She has nodules indeed, she said it herself. I am quite sure that she does not want to have surgery because she is afraid of losing her voice, like Julie Andrews. The fact is that JUlie had really bad luck. Vocal surgery is a minor procedure, lots of opera singers had it and several times. About the half&half thing, you are right. She did it also on the Butterfly tour. And from that moment on its been bigger and bigger. Vocal rest only delays the consequences, the ultimate solution is surgery.

If you listen to all of her albums, from the first to the last, you can notice some vocal changes even in Music Box, even though they were small changes, they are still evident. For example, on Musix Box you can hear her voice crack and sometimes sound strained. Same on the Xmas album. The thing is that the big change was around the time of the Butterfly tour.

It was a slow process. But year by year you can listen the difference. Even if you watch performances from the Musix Box era, you can see that she strains a lot more compared to earlier performances, for example performances of Anytime you need a friend, without you and hero. The belting is different, it sounds more strained and actually you can notice the strain in her face and body inflections.

If you listen to any of her recent songs in this time then you can tell that she has the breathy parts of it right. The last part of We Belong Together is definately live, it didn't sound all that because of her belting. Her belting is getting MUCH better than what it was and I think that her belting being much higher than normal caused the rough ending of We Belong Together. [My suspicision]

She looks so warm and down to earth. And very very pretty.
But I can't help but think she's a bit under the weather during this performance. She seems a bit tired maybe.
But she looked like she enjoyed her Canadian debut. She got some enthusiastic fans in the audience, and she got everybody real excited. =D
