A quiet m30 535i is not a healthy car, it's supposed to sound like an old singer sewing machine. All of you that said get something thats not a piece of sh*t don't know older bmw's.
Anyone know what a broken manifold sounds like? My car sounds really loud, and I can often hear the individual strokes. While driving home from work, i was hearing light puttering noises and then as i got near home, suddenly it went "Clunk!" and then I started hearing "Bangs" and the engine was REALLY loud. The noise was coming from the engine. I assume this is a broken manifold? Please respond! Help would be much appreciated!
a broken manifold would not be that loud more just a ticking noise, unless is has a very large leak. but most likely where the collector connects to the y pipe has separated

That's how my Z28 sounds. I have a leak right on the connection from the passenger side header to the y-pipe. It's annoying the piss out of me, but I don't have any money to fix it right now.
actually the high tech way of finding an exhaust leak that a saw the guys at muffler masters use is a rubber hose to your ear and the other end on the exhaust system feeling around :)
climb under the car with the engine going and feel around the pipe and joints for any blast of exhaust which will indicate a leak DON"T TOUCH the pipe for obvious reasons.
Sounds like my corolla. It has a bad hole in the flex pipe between the manifold and the catylic converter. Feel around the flex pipe and feel for a hole or in my case a big gash.

yeah, my jetta sounds like that. as the engine speeds up the "ticking" speeds up as well.
