  • PS: Brian Matthew says Ray Davies wrote this song to Dave Berry, this must explain why the kinks didn't released it officialy.

  • "melancholy and depressive" And that's why i didn't like it =D [is Hooverphonic an emo band?]

But the vocals are okay, removing the background (it's a kind of annoying, and you can't listen to the real rythm) and it'd be good

  • Brian Matthews is the BBC guy talking in the original version, he removed his voice (he sais something like 'And now, the kinks blablabla' in the begining.

[i had it in a The Kinks at BBC version, or something like that]

  • Original Version = 10k views

    Cover = 300k views

    =S

  • Am I the only one who got a commercial about the Kaiser Chiefs??

  • am i the only one who thinks of james bond when you hear this song?

  • Chameleon eyes

  • Great song I love it!

  • LA FEMME NIKITA On Borrowed Time. i like this music

  • Love this song

  • new nikita season finale reappearance of actress who played madeline leads me to youtube vid tribute to madeline and old la femme nikita which leads me to one of my favorite groups and albums.. hooverphonic, blue wonder power milk. pow.

  • @barmak9

No one do a Peta Wilson or Roy Dupuis for sure :)

  • simple slow and has great depth - a deep melancholy feel good likey kind of trip

  • @KultOfNikita YEEEESSSSS! I just finished watching that episode, On Borrowed Time, which resulted in me looking up this song...AGAIN! I LOVE La Femme Nikita with Roy Dupuis and Peta Wilson!!!

  • @KultOfNikita YEEESSSSSSS!!! I just finished watching that episode "On Borrowed Time" and it made me look up this song...AGAIN....LOVE La Femme Nikita with Roy Dupuis and Peta Wilson!!!

  • from album ABDUCTIONS AND RECONSTRUCTIONS of THIEVERY CORPORATION :) GREAT

  • Oh lawd. This choon. THIS CHOON! My lover showed this to me. It means everything to me. EVERYTHING!

  • not as good as the original or Steve Wynn's cover but still very enjoyable.

  • @gonzax wow, better is out there, who did the original? i shall broach this observation, thanks for it - dave berry?

  • @gonzax hooverphonic KILLS wynn and berry... what the hell are you thinking?! you like dumbed down and trashy better than ethereal and trippy? so what is the original?

  • @gonzax now if the KINKS had done this song (they wrote it originally) instead of this dave berry guy doing it, now that might have been something!... HOOVERPHONIC is by far the best i've found for this song... but you know: music and "best" and quantifying the subjective... taste is a matter of opinion, even though i think science and empiricism could prove my point...

  • @glorp896

ok, we'll have to agree then that music is just a matter of opinion, it is! this cover is great but I still prefer Steve Wynn's cover.

  • @glorp896 watch?v=mKyjHhsbAtg

    Isn't it The Kinks' version?

  • @missurunha1 not sure what the details are as to spanish... Brian Matthews? so in any case i still think hooverphonic is the best so far, after hearing at least 3 versions now... 4 actually... so without ray davies singing it, its not kinks to me

  • @glorp896 It's Ray Davies, it is on a The Kinks album and sounds like him..

I do preffer that version =D, idk why, i think the 'better one' is almost aways the one you've listened first..

  • @missurunha1 i know the bias u speak of but this clearly is not it for me... i'm convinced hooverphonic nailed it better than anyone so far...

i really wasn't sure if it was ray davies, was some mention of another... so ray wrote it but the kinks didn't publish it - they might not even have put it to song first - definitely didn't put it on wax first... ok, thanks for brian matthews explanation...

some covers are HUGE upgrades - ALIEN ANT FARM'S "SMOOTH CRIMINAL" kills michael J.

  • @missurunha1 774,681 more views for ALIEN ANT FARM and their version compared to michael jackson... that might say it all?

Korn may have one upped METALLICA in ONE

hooverphonic adds an etheric feel - greater sophistication away from the more basic versions of old rock and pop... not to mention alot more instruments and sound effects... more melancholy and depressive is this one as well... which works - i find the video bothersome, confining and not the strange effect i wanted

  • @missurunha1 ? not sure who song this, must be ray davies?

This Strange Effect Written by: Ray Davies Published by: ?

so i looked it up, DAVE BERRY was the first to have it on vinyl and record it, ray davies of the kinks wrote it but didn't get it going until ? actually they never got it going, i'll send u the discography

  • is it me or do they have a thing for tunnels and corridors? it seems to be a recurring thing in their clips

  • I fell in love with you with this song T_T now we are not together... and we won't... Miss you my L-Limón ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

  • luv luv luv this song it took me FOREVER to find out who it was by.

  • I dont remember where I was when I heard this for the first time being that it was maybe 4 yrs ago but I remember it being exactly how I felt... and I couldnt exactly put it into words myself....

  • A brilliant reworking of the original version by the kinks.

  • Love Hooverphonic's class a lot. They're so fit for refined and elegant mood in songs.

    Love her aerial voice.

    So perfect.

  • Does the James Bond movie follow this video?

  • @rolandrog I agree, I've always thought this sounded like the perfect song for a James Bond intro. The guitar really gives it a spy-like feel.

  • i remeber first hearing this on that phone commerical i think for the razor

  • Can't believe Ive had this for 9 years...so good!!

  • This song is totally amazing, I'm dedicating it to a special dude named Robert.

  • Excellent !!

  • Everytime I listen this song Hooverphonic makes love to my brain trough my ears.

  • ouch

  • Love it

  • To all of you who love this song, it was written by Ray Davies of the Kinks. Not by Hooverphonic.....who do a really great version. It was written by Ray for Dave Berry-UK singer in the 60's-it was one of the biggest selling singles ever in HOLLAND!

  • Comment removed

  • If you're selling in Holland you are BIG. Nederlanders zijn gierig. :P

  • Or "worldfamous" in Belgium ;)

  • Japan is the second largest music market behind the US. So, no... it's not.

  • classic hooverphonic song,love it

  • Spectrum Winterguard (colorguard) uses this song (clips of it, and of 'Magenta' and 'Battersea') in their 2009 show, and so the songs give me the shivers. I love that show with a fiery passion, and hence these songs! I cant not think of thier dance work, and Casey doing the evil glare to the stands at the beginning, and the sexy dance in the corner, and the twins and and and.......*fangirly scream*

  • casey is my instructor, well not anymore since i kind of am graduating in june, but yeah i love spectrum too

  • Toch nog beter dan Sliek de Zeesterre ;-)

  • The song is very unique and impacting.

The video is wierd though comparing to the song.

  • This song is utterly addictive.

  • I think i heard this song before in a commercial or something.

  • Yes it was in the commercial for the original Razor phone.

  • Actually, it was the SLVR, not the RAZR. :]

  • Yeah. Good music isn't necessarily popular musit. My dead dog could make a rap song. And I only say that because I have made a rap song. It's easy nowadays; one doesn't even need to use real words.

This music is amazing. Heavenly in every way.

  • You are so right. I remember downloading this awhile ago not even realizing it was the same group that realeased one of my favorite songs- 2wicky!

  • It's like 'Wall of Voodoo' meets the 'Cocteau Twins'. Kinda sorta. But I like this the more I hear it.

  • the perfect song for some kissing action. haha.

  • the cell phone commercial after i heard that i had to find it

  • Same here, it was the Sliver, wasn't it?

  • EXACTLY

  • just... WOW

    Sexy...

  • "..and I like it"

  • sounds like a bond theme song, they should do one

  • fucking amazing :D

  • I love this song!!!

  • wooow, great instrumental

  • coolest song i've ever heard

  • Comment removed

  • The melody and those castanets... oh man, I gotta go take a shower!

  • a remake from Dave Berry! not bad ,the first version is better on my eyes, but it is nice !

  • The Belgian trip hop / downtempo trio created this LUXURIANT song, which is the ninth on "Blue Wonder Power Milk" (1998)...

Geike Arnaert is the lead singer of the act, that CAN`T be absent from yr chill out collection!

  • Cocteau Twins fan? my favorite by them is "Song to Siren". I have to admit that I like their version better than Tim Buckley's original - even if that's sacrilege to say.

  • Real unique sound to it. Need more original music of this sort. Terrific stuff!

  • Great Song!

  • Great audio too - thanks for putting it up for us!!

  • Bloody hot with a hipnotic twist!

  • The first song I heard of them. In that time and even now It's kinda hipnotic... Great!

  • yeah. me too! i heard it on the motorola razr commercial and searched for the lyrics to find them. they are great. if you like them, also try portishead.

  • I'm very fan of trip-hop, shoegaze, dreampop and similar. If you want to share music jus write me ;)

  • i am more into industrial, and goth. on the goth side of soft music is ethereal - like dead can dance and this mortal coil. i always knew about hooverphonic and portishead but only recently looked into them. i dig it.

  • me encanta como suena este grupo. ALICIA

  • A mí también. Me enteré que esta canción es muy antigua, o sea que es un cover, pero suena excelente.

  • Great song

  • bonobo socks!

  • her voice, the eery feel about the video... a masterpiece!

  • Isn't that a tunnel under the Schelde?

  • i heard abt this group through a verizon commercial.

  • Actually, this song was used on a commercial for the Motorola SLVR.

  • This song has a strange effect all it's own one me. It has that James Bond feel to it, and it's just the coolest little song.
