This totally brings me back to the days when I was like 7 or 8 and my older brother and I were into Project A-Ko, Video Girl Ai, Ranma, Fushigi Yuugi, Riding Bean and Tank Police. I remember the Derive and the Two Robots shorts the most from this. I feel bad for those who grew up too late to catch these back in the day when Sci-Fi channel was cool.
Adored this movie since i was 12 back in 93 when i saw this on TBS in november that year with Heavy Metal, American Pop, Rock and Rule and Vampire Hunter D
Did you ever watched Mysterious Cities of Gold, Voltron, Warriors of the Wind (the 1985 New World butchery of Nausicaa), Thundercats, Last Unicorn, Unico 1 & 2 etc.?
@Johnlindsey289 All but Last Unicorn and Unico, but Last Unicorn sounds familiar. When I knew what anime was, though, I started picking up vhs tapes when I could and watched the hecks out of Toonami.
But you do remember Warriors of the Wind right? that 1985 New World chopjob of Nausicaa that had Hal Smith in it and the names were changed? every 80's child's introduction to Miyazaki
Oh yes i remember that when i was 5 and that was a cool game plus i rented the anime when i was in high school when Streamline distributed it. I also remembered renting My Neighbor Totoro the same year i saw this and Vampire Hunter D on TBS after hearing great reviews and became a miyazaki fan and i rented Akira when i was 13 as it blew my mind and left an impression on me.
A great anime short. :) I really like the character designs and animation in this anime short. :) A nice ending as well where the Girl finds Mr Right. :)
damn this is old, i'm 26 and i swera i saw this sometimes in the early 90's or even late 80's like as in '89 or something. been a long time. Robot Carnival was my intro to animes
Sleeping beauty castle, Mr Tom Morrow (the robot), with backdrop of the carousel of progress. Main Street Electrical Parade is there too!
I am pretty sure the theme park is Disney inspired. But a really really good anime. I was too young to watch and understand it when they showed it on TV. I switched it off at "Cloud"!
I loooove this!! The first time I watched the movie was about 17 yrs ago when I was 6, and when the SciFi channel (cooler back then) showed Saturday morning Animes... it was the best thing ever!
@ToruKun1 well the director of this piece directed episodes of Zeta Gundam and Gundam ZZ, and did character designs for Char's Counterattack, so maybe that influenced the ex.
I love how most of these if not all of em (been super long since I saw the whole thing) have no words. They let the music to all the talking. It truely is way ahead of its time. So bummed I can't buy this on DVD.
Thank you! What a beautiful piece! Humans always dream to make robots who are like them, and in stories, non-humans(robots, mermaids, etc) always dream to become like humans with deep feelings. And those good non-humans are usually more single-minded and beautiful-hearted without malice and deceit. The male robot reminds me of beautiful Marina in "Little Mermaid anime."
watch?v=khj9jyNvhpQ - watch this while this s.o.s. band song is playing in the background. 80s overload.

The tune in the beginning sounded like the final fantasy theme, the park looked like Disneyland

@Johnlindsey289 Yes, that was my first anime. Many years later I finally watched the original with subtitles, thankfully.

@Johnlindsey289 Unless they happened to play the Castle Of Cagliostro arcade game; Cliffhanger, 2 years prior.

sacapalpavo 2 years ago
@sacapalpavo It is, according to its wikipedia article. Some of the staff involved went to work at Square.
SalocinTEN 1 year ago
@SalocinTEN really? hahaha well that make sense, back then Square made good games, now...well...=S
sacapalpavo 1 year ago
@sacapalpavo Because I see some of the same names being involved in the games they produce.
But yes, their games have begun to loose substance, despite their ever awesome graphics.

Very shoujo!
What many viewers don't get is that the robot at 6:07 is supposed to represent the girl's ex-boyfriend who jilted her for her bestfriend.
