It's interesting to me how little there is about this, but I've had histo for yrs (in my right at 11, left at 19) and I've just recently started doing my own research. It's interesting to read about it after having it for so long. Getting it the 1st time really wasn't that bad, but that's because my eye doc at the time thought I might have a tumor :) The second time broke my parents hearts I think, but I didn't get why, I'm healthy, can still see a bit, and there are worse things in the world :)
I have Ocular Histoplasmosis as well. One day I was looking at the computer and all of a sudden I lost vision out of my right eye, just half and my left eye was like a fuzzy TV screen. I googled (worste thing you could do) and I saw the deattached retina) called the eye dr, they got me in right away. They said it was probably from high blood pressure or stress. the following week i went to my family dr for a check up.
i told him and he flipped out. he said it was possibly i had a stroke, I am only 25. so i flipped out...but told him i dont have inscurance for an MRI so he said he would send me to an eye specialist. i went and he said he thinks i had have ocular histoplasmosis. he wasnt in the office where he could take the pictures so i had to go to the other office the next day...
that is when i found out both eyes have scarring. the right eye had the hymorraging (sp?). shot of avastin, it has cleared up, that was 5-6 months ago. I am due to go back in 2 weeks for a check up. I am so scared and nervous though. I do not see spots really and my wavy lines are no longer since the shot. i do however need glasses and just pray my vision is bad and just realizing how bad i need glasses.
I never connected until know, but these floaters materialized also not long after we moved to a new house with lots of bats. Often these guys would escape the attic and end up in the house, when they weren't crapping from the eaves above my window.
I can actually read and see better when I close my left eye, but the Dr says that will only make it worse, and now that the right is as bad as the right was ten years ago, it has become intersting.
@patobrocks Wow, very interesting....I had major problems with depth perception when this was all going on for me. Luckily, my retina doctor was able to help me. Good luck to you!
When I get these flare-ups I want to ignore them, but while driving I am terrified that some kid on a skate board will dart ou in front of me. to be honest, I don't know if I worry more about the guilt of killing some kid, or facing the prospect of taking showers in a prison.
I've noticed that my eyes become more impaired as the day goes on. I can still legally drive, but I really don't trust myself and have quit drivng. I still have a driveres license and would still use it in an emergency. A major factor of the impairment is the floaters that come and go. I've had them since I was a kid and just attributed them to intermittently recurring LSD flashback. Consequently, I keep seeing things move in my peripheal that are not really there.
thanks for the posting. I've had problems for a while, but never got diagnosed until 2004, when I noticed 2 simultaneous far-off horizons, and then with each eye, I noticed two akward angles.
I was given the injections, and they helped, but I had a bad reaction to 'em and they were removed from my possible options.
When I look at the grid, with either eye now, besides the gray areas, I have major line distortion. I've also lost much of my depth perception.
@icegirl152 Thank you for asking and the dr decided to give me Avastin injections instead. That was 5 days ago and I hope I see some results soon. I have to have the injections once a month for 3 months. For anyone preparing for the injections, the injections aren't painful, just stressful.
My eye doctor did not recognize this said could do nothing about it.....the bleeding ended up scarring so badly it destroyed the fovea in my eye thus taking out my central vision in my left eye. Couple of years later my right eye was effected by diabetes with macular degeneration causing ischemia not enough oxygen to the eye because of poor blood flow. Now I am legally blind.
my 8 year old was just diagnosed yesterday we found out she has already lost her sight in her right eye. thank u for the video nice to know what she is going thru.
I wasdiagnosed with atypical histoplasmosis in both eyes about15-20 years ago. Histoplasmosis infects about 80% of all people in the midwest, the majority of whom never experience anything more than what seems to be a mild cold. The eye institute that treated me took photographs of both retinas and had me return every six months for two years so they could watch it. No changes yet, so I don't worry too much about it.
I was diagnosed with OSH around the end of last year 2009 in both eyes. My docter didn't really know anything about it, besides handing me the eye chart and to call a specialist. I was told its not active and and to contact them when theres any change in vision. Most of what I've learned about it was online and my familys in denial that I'll go blind, without knowing really anything about it. It's scary when you don't really have anyone to lean on. I really appreciate your video, Thank you.
Thanks for your comment. Do you use the Amsler grid daily? That will easily help you tell if your vision is changing. I use one, but not daily. Take care of yourself, and thanks for sharing.
My son was diagnosed at 4 months with disseminated histoplasmosis whis caused him to have heptospleenomegaly. I have hoped that he would not develope ocular histo. I almost lost my son and due to the amphertercine b and itroconozole his growth has been severly delayed. They thought he had luekemia but then discovered it was Histo. They say that he should not develope ocular histo but I am not sure. thanks for sharing your story
I was diagnosed with OHS last October. I have it in Both eyes. My right eye was misdiagnosed a year ago, and now has a big black spot in it. The Left eye started the distortion--I went to a new doc (one that wouldnt say "Nothing can be done") and I will receive my 5th Avastin injection next Friday. We're just trying to get the bleeding under control. I'm ready for this to be Over--needles in the eye ball are SO not fun.
Thanks for the comment. I had the misdiagnosis of optic neuritis a year before the little blood vessels started bleeding. I'm glad you went to a new doc. I didn't until the blood showed up in my eye. Then, I was referred to a retinal specialist. He is the one that saved my vision!! Yes, needles in the eyeball suck!
I have these thing too since many years ago a few decades actually before the surgery existed, my left eye is pretty much gone my right eye is ok, they gave me a shitload of steroids when i got it, i have gotten it back a few times i tink when my inmune sistem is low it can come back but i have been living a healthier life for the past 9 years and it has not come back, if it attacs my right eye i will have to have the surgery ouch i better keep eating healthy food and exercising to keep it awa
I was diagnosed with histoplasmosis in Dec of 2008. It is only in my right eye. My retina specialist actually recommended an injection of Avastin. I received the injection in Dec. of 2008 and my vision has not improved all that much since then. Although it has not gotten any worse either. My doctor did not even mention sub-retinal surgery.
I think the sub-retinal surgery I had was a last ditch effort back then. There weren't too many options like there are now. I'm glad your vision has not gotten worse. Thanks for commenting!
i got the shat from chickens. have small blindspots in both eyes. just noticed the right one last year. got floater that never went away. really bugs. got mine treated real early. hopefully never come back. 2 live in fear is a bad thing. so dont dig in dirt, yes it and leprosy is in dirt. stay away from caves and chickens.
the smsler grid is how he found out he had two new spots one in each eye and it seems always to get worse in the inter time. thank you for replying to my post it is just hard.
he is doing alright we are finding out alot of things from the institute for the blind and they are helping us get things all set up learning brail and using a cane it going to be a long and hard prcess but we will be doign it together. he is doing okay just trying to adjust the best he can
my hubby two years ago went for the sugery and now it came back two new spos so they will be doing the surgery again and the doctor said evenually he will be blind totaly iwas woundering if you know how long this process takes cause the docs said all they can do is slow down how fast he willgo blind so he will have his sight longer. he is only 26 years onld and it hard alot of the times and heis goin for the srgery on thursday and want to know all i can to help him.
Oh, dear angelfire818, I wish I had the answer to your question. I think each case is different. My retina dr. said that the bad blood vessels could grow back at any time, or they may never grow back. I just know that I need to check my vision regularly with the Amsler grid. You and your husband will be in my thoughts and prayers.
Thanks for the video, i too have histoP, and have had complications for years now, I found out i had a blind spot in one eye, but no one has ever suggested surgery.
Weird thing is my other eye, hurt tremendously and was red all the time, it took a long time for me to receive the correct treatment just to stop the pain.
I was finally and definativly diagnosed in late 2007, but had experiences major problems since 2002.
So thank you for your video, it is nice to have you share your problems. =)
yikes! that's a lot of big words in this video here! hehe. i'm glad your vision got worked out tho. i had a problem with my eyes when i had a bloodclot in my head when i was 19. it was called a 6th nerve palsy which meant that the nerve that made my left eye move outward was paralyzed. that was fun. i saw double & triple of everything. it was trippy. the fun thing was that i got to wear a pirates eye patch for a while until it got better. :) hehe
