Because slavery was the worst of them. Also because all the others stemmed from slavery, since that was the genesis of how blacks arrived here-- how the culture clash and the problem of integration arose in the first place.
Of course there were going to be growing pains in a newly interracial society, but to act as if white people (on the whole) have not acknowledged past injustices is just ludicrous. Whites have since done right by black people whether you appreciate it or not.

@hameld The biggest reason that this country (among others) was founded as a republic is because the lack of technology at the time limited the possibility of a complete democracy (counting milions of votes on every single issue, without computers, is not practical) The only "rules" that were meant to be set in stone is the constitution. Keep in mind... states who no longer fit in with the other states have the right to part with the union!

The problem with a republic is that ANY crook can (and does) pretty much manipulate almost anybody into voting for them via media manipulation... and most people are just stupid enough that it actually works!
At least with a democracy, that isn't as much of an issue since there wouldn't be a position for any crook to run for.
