@toMarsQuickly I wash my brushes when they need it, I can't really say how often that is. LOL. I use baby shampoo to wash all of my brushes - the ones for my hair, my make-up brushes, and after they've soaked in turpentine - even my oil paint brushes. Most of my brushes have natural hair and I find baby shampoo to be gentle on them.
I had a question about the u pins. I didn't get a good look at them, are they thick like a knitting needle or thin like a bobby pin? I have these pins that are meant for thick hair but they're bendy (i bent one side up to make em stay) . Have you used those?
@evilfoxtail I have two sets of u-pins - I have a set I made by bending double pointed knitting needles in half - they are awesome, and then I have the bendy ones like you described. They aren't the best. ( They are what I used in the tutorial, however.) What I need to invest in are Amish hair pins - they are u-pins that hold their shape. Google them! LOL.
I always failed at the sockbun until I bought a donut with a tiny hole that had finally enough grip to hold in my fine hair. I use two scroos to secure it and it works just fine. It even looks kind of natural because the donut is comparatively small and I have fine hair, so the bun is reasonably sized.
Gave this a try but failed epically. My bsl hair isn't long enough or maybe its the darn layers. I still wore a super cute side rope braid bun and quite enjoyed it. Thanks for all your hard work and my 19 month old approved of this vid! :0)
As soon as you upload a new style I am sold and have to try it :D Torrin, I have a question/request which might be little less challenging than the usual braided updos - a retro high ponytail (hollywood starlet-like), I would like to wear it for my upcoming wedding and just cannot figure it out :( I think it is not even a ponytail, just looks like so, but how to make it so voluminous and thick at the base?
@pilarternera do you have a link to a picture? I can see if I can figure it out for you. Just message me here on YT, I can copy and paste the link, no problem. :o)
Btw, I want to have Sissi hair for my holidays in Vienna (having a historical ball at Hofburg), do you have any ideas on how to do that? I will very likely use fake hair for that as well, as my hair is not that long... But yours looks like it has the right length and volume!
(eat that Romy Schneider, she had to have loads of fake hair for her role in Sissi)
Hi Torrin, I really like this up-do and thought of trying it out...
However after making the sock bun (which is great by the way! I seem to have a huge bun with that alone!) I ran out of hair... :(
But as I have a ball this saturday and have some spare (fake) hair to go with it, I used that to finish it! The finishing is more like you grecian braiding video (with one big braid instead of 3) with the ends of the braid going around the bun...
I looked for the Upins and it says it's for jewlery displays and look really sharp. Do you have those kinds? Did you sandpaper the edges so that they're not so sharp?
@RachelLee113 I use two different kinds - the Tangle Teezer and a Goody paddle brush. Sometimes I just need the leverage of a handle, and since the TT doesn't have a handle, I rely on my dependable Goody.
Thanks a lot for this, I've been struggling with updo's since my hairloss but this is a fantastic option. And of course I've gotta love everything that has a sock bun, haha xD
This is definitely really cool. My hair is definitely not long enough (my poor barely BSL layered hair!), but it's cool! You totally have to do more for fine haired people like me!
I actually got some at sallys this weekend and they werent as sturdy as i hoped they would be. Im returning them and ordering Amish pins online instead Thanks for the input!
Hi Torrin I love all of you videos! I was wondering if you had any advice for me. Whenever I put my hair up it looks oily even after I have washed it. Do you have any tips for me?
@MichaelaUbienski You might try a different brush that'll smooth it more, like a boar bristle brush. I know that when mine is getting up to wash day, I find that smoothing it into an up-do with a BBB gets me much better results. Granted, it's REALLY shiny because it actually is so oily, but I figure other gals put product in their hair to get that shine, so I just roll with it.
@HyperSensitive88 Sally's Beauty Supply. However, I have been told if you Google Amish Hair pins - those are WAY better than what I have. I'm gonna have to get some for myself. They are much more sturdy.
I LOVE YOU SO HARD! YES! This will be lovely ad classy and fancy as hell! I may do a slight modification, but it is GORGEOUS! I will try to have y trial hair up this week. Ad THANK YOU for the sock bun confessional lol. I also use my old man's old (clean) socks. And the tip about the stocking> Genius! xoxoxoxoxoxo
do you wash your brushes? how often? what do you use for your BBB?

@WinkyGirls I would need lots of fake hair as well. MY hair isn't anywhere long or thick enough to replicate the Sissi styles.

@MsArmitage just google hairpins or amish hairpins - They are U shaped and I just say u pins to differentiate from bobby pins.
