First time 2nd after Karpov in 1982; then he seems to have fallen down and then jumped up several times, coming in 3rd after Kasparov and Karpov, finally reaching his top rating in 1990. Somewhat later, while staying a very good player, he was overtaken by the next generation, such as Kramnik and other young players.
I think he could have become world champion... if he had narrowed down his huge opening reportoire and played with less risk.
@Matute7231 I think you won't see him too much nowadays. He is now a writer and editor. Timmand had hist best time in the late 70's and early 1980's: according to Wikipedia, around that time he was almost as strong as Karpov, ranking 2nd after him on the world rating list. He obtained his higest ever ELO Rating in 1990, which was 2680.
He's been steadily declining since 2000. Pity, but that's how it goes.
@SilverHammond Yeah, i know all that; after winning the Linares tournament in '87 journalism was trying to compare him with Fischer because of the contundent way in which he won it ahead of lots of elite players. I meant I hope to see him more maybe in opens or senior tournaments, at least when his writing job leaves him time.
@Matute7231 I won't be the one to hold him back :) Open or senior tournaments could be an option. I can imagine that it's not really fun anymore for a legendary once-star player such as Timman to be beaten by young people being 1/3rd of his age, but 200-250 ELO points stronger... However much I would like to see it to be otherwise, I don't think he stands a change ;(
