I saw this guy on a Taylor guitar tour promotion in San Angelo Texas @ Caldwell Music a few years ago. Phenomenal player. I remember he played Beatles 'Penny Lane' with the vocal parts, bass, and all of the brass parts at the same time!
NOT THAT PERFECT? HE SAYS IT'S NOT REHEARSED? Good lord, I hope he doesn't make a rehearsed one and post it so I don't suddenly want to quit playing! He's too good!
so you can go the Joe Pass route and become a good solo guitarist, or you can go the Lenny Breau route and take the Bill Evans feel, or you can go with Steven here and... ah fuck it, dude's like the Art Tatum of the guitar!!!
Does anyone know if he takes the same approach as Tatum? It seems like his methodology is very consistent and systematic, but his lead lines are they also based on a set of patterns in the same way that Tatum worked out his solo repertoire? Or is it all off the cuff???
From waht I know, I´d say it´s not that jazzy anyway. Steven arranges these tunes systematically (look up his instructional clips)in his style, which I agree is freaking awesome. One of the best I´ve seen ever. But I bet you, it´s nothing like "off the cuff"...you can even order tabs of his arrangements on his website, so it´s all carefully worked out stuff.
saw this guy live a couple years ago at our local music store for a private concert. it was a Taylor Guitars sponsored event and it was sick. notice how there is a staggered pickup in the center... he runs that pickup (strings E and A) through a bass cab and the others through a standard amp and that's how he gets the full sound of two guitars at once.... crazy.
Its interesting that he uses barre chords ,most fingerstyle guitarists avoid them like the plague -Merle Travis made a point of saying he NEVER uses them and developed all these strange thumb chord work arounds -anyhow they work for Steven King
Maybe its something to do with classical training? I always use barre chords myself and never thought EVER of using anything different - only recently found capos! heh. This playing is amazing!
I think this pickup formation captures the sound of the 5th and 6th strings and lowering them an octave so that it sounds like and actual bass guitar.
No offense to you personally, but a common misconception is that natural talent is the reason a musician reaches this level. Although it's true that some are born with a higher degree of natural talent, that isn't what gets them to the top of their field - hard work does that. I'm putting this here so those willing to do the work will know they can make if they work for it. Knowledgable musicians will tell you that hard work wins out over natural talent every time. This vid shows both. :-)
We'll now I don't know what to say... I must confess I thought you might be a one tick pony but now I see you are nothin' but a endless magic truck of surprises... I love these little packets of pleasure one stumbles across on this box... Thanks for it all!
Stephen: I'd forgotten how good you were since I saw you live 10 years ago.
BTW: Thank you so much for your little book on quick and dirty improvisation. I read it, I dug it, I do it. Thanx for the inspiration. Oh, yeah, it took me 10 years to work it out...
That's too amazing for words. I have an Epiphone ES295 w/ bigsby. I wonder sometimes if the bigsby renders it a not quite a jazz guitar guitar. Especially after watching this video.
you know i've been playing fingerstyle a while and there aren't many players who can do this. his sound is great- it is one thing to sound like a guitar, but he actually sounds like a bass, a snare and a guitar in places.
