  • Is it just me or are the early batman comics just as bright and colorful as early superman

  • That's John Romita @00:32, right? If he still has that copy of Action Comics #1 in that wax paper bag, and if it has never been out and fundled, he has the finest copy of that comic in the world. God damn, what a backup if he looses his pension!

  • My director likes to say that Batman is a very anti-semitic character, while Superman is a very zionistic comic.

  • I've always thought that if the comic book world really reflected reality, that Superman would be worshipped as a God, Batman wouldn't have a damn thing to do with ANY other superhero, and that Aquaman would be a conservation icon, probably on a reality show like Whale Wars.lol

  • that clip of superman, i had that on vhs back in the day when i was like 3 or 4 i use to watch it so much....damn i gotta look for that now

  • So Captain America wasn't created by Stan Lee?!?!?!?!

  • its a bird, its a plane NO ITS SUUUPERRRMANNNN!!!!!!!

  • I agree with the contrast between Superman and Batman. Even the cities where they live. Metropolis resembles NYC during the daytime while Gotham, night. Personally I like Batman better because he is a more realistic costumed superhero. He does not have any superpowers but instead use intelligence and gadgets. His enemies are some of the most hardcore in comic book history (who can beat Joker?) and his story lines are complex.

  • Superman is a dick.

  • wow those are really awesome superman animations

  • @stunner8000 Just about everyone who was involved in the early Batman comics cites Bill Finger's role in the creation of Batman such as Jerry Robinson who along with Finger created The Joker & Robin, the exception being Bob Kane who in his lifetime took credit in just about every aspect of Batman's creation even over just about all the ghost artists who worked under him.

  • @cha5 : Kane actually gave Finger credit around '89 in his auto-bio... of course Finger was dead and buried by that point...

  • Comment removed

  • @DeepSouthWrestling1 Well better late than never I guess, did he also give Bill Finger & Jerry Robinson credit for creating The Joker & Robin? I haven't read Kane's auto-bio yet, if he actually made that admission I'd be impressed if he came clean on that point. I just wish DC would list in their Batman comics credits something like 'Batman, created by Bill Finger & Bob Kane' with everything we know about Batman's creation these days; it only seems fair IMHO.

  • @cha5 : I didn't read it, either... I knew it was nothing but a puff piece that was trumpeting how "great" and "trendsetting" Kane was so I knew better. I'll go you one more, however... I think Finger and Robinson have more to do with Batman than Kane. I don't think Finger will ever get credit, however... I think Kane signed some sort of agreement with DC, legally binding them to an agreement with Kane to list him as the sole creator in perpetuity... not a great artist, but pretty smart...

  • @DeepSouthWrestling1 Yeah I believe I remember a mention of Kane's agreement with DC in the Gerald Jones book 'Men of Tomorrow'

I'm going to pick up Jerry Robinson's auto-biography sometime soon just to get his perspective on it.

Joe Simon in his auto-biography has several interesting anecdotes about Kane in his auto-biography 'My Life In Comics'

"Kane would swagger into the DC offices. 'Either you've got it or you don't got it' he'd say.

    'I got it' he'd conclude."

  • @cha5 : Yeah, I kind'a got the feeling that Simon was holding back throughout the whole book... it was ok, but he was obviously being diplomatic... That Robinson book looks fantastic, btw...

  • i just realised that cbs archive announcement about superman was broadcast the day john lennon was born,i know its not relevant to this, just thought it was interesting

  • Why does superman punches the laser?... I mean... he could just... go superfast and destroy the gun...

  • @T3Mo:-

The laser's more of a heat ray. It's sending out pieces of molten rock as well, and they're forcing Superman back with each hit.

You can't see it very well in this video, but it's clear in the cartoon itself.

  • @taffysaur oh! That´s why, thanks!

  • yeah, I don't know what he's talking about either, Wonder Woman comes from an island full of women, therefore she's suspicious towards men, Captain Marvel is actually a kid, but turns into the superhero by magical forces when he says "Shazam!".. what's wrong with that?

  • @DemiathDoomhammer WONDERWOMAN HAS ONE OF THE BEST ORIGIN STORIES IN HISTORY..I KNO ALOT ABOUT BOTH CAP N WW...WONDERWOMAN ORIGIN IS ONE DA BEST ILL SAY IT AGAIN ITS REALLY CREATIVE FOR ITS TIME N IS BEYOND ITS YEARS

  • What does he mean by "terrible stories"? Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel had terrible stories?

  • all of those factors make him jewish? haha that was the dumbest thing ive ever heard

  • @Simeontalon superman is very much an outgrowth from the jewish american having immigrated from a europe which was destroying itself. they had no means to return to europe as it no longer had a place for them.

don't dismiss something because you may not understand it.

even the name kal-el has a hebrew sound. "el" is the hebrew word for "deity."

  • I also own the"Max Fleisher Studios Superman" and agree way ahead of its time . I believe the "Rotoscope Technique" was used to animate the characters...way ahead of its time...Love it!

  • I own that Superman animated series on DVD by Max Fliescher and till this day it holds up as great animation.

  • I can't believe how good the animation on that 1941 Superman cartoon was

  • One of the coolest things Max Fliescher did was apply a special look and lighting to the animation that gave it terrific atmosphere. It was noir, and realistic.

  • @HDibbles yeah i have it on dvd its amazing for the 40s considering all the crappy and cheap 70s animation.

  • @journeyanimation1 Definetly

  • It was made for cinema. TVs weren't around back then.

  • I think he meant Chinese people instead of jewish ppl.

  • I didn't realize Jewish people were originally ILLEGAL immigrants...

  • Who is today that in early America the bureaucracy was strong enough to register and keep tabs on newcomers?

  • what?

  • When I was young, I learned about death by reading Batman comics about the loss of his parents. It left med a deep impression wich I still carry to this day.

  • True, the Batman is not a super hero, he's a vigilante, he wages a war on crime and corruption, but what makes a super hero is that he would never kill anyone, ntil the Batman R.I.P. story arc. And even if Superman had been there for 9/11 there was nothing that he could have done, Captain America, the X-men and of course Spider-man were unable to do more than they could; by the time any of them had arrived, the towers were almost demolished.

  • sorry about the second part of my comment comment dunno what i was thinkin . but how does that make him a super hero?

  • Well as grim and gritty a character as Batman is he has always made it a point not to kill anyone, because violence and desperation took his family from him, if he were to give into rage and have nothing but bloody revenge then he would be no different than the evil that he had swarn to fight. That's what makes him a super hero his will to be stronger willed and restrained than his enemies.

  • yeah but none of that makes him super. He has no super power so he is just a hero. no ?

  • He's a super hero because he chooses to do whats right, he see's how fucked up our world really is and unlike any of these other heroes he decides to not just sit back and wait for panic and destruction, he fights back. What makes him a hero is the fact that he also realizes that he's only human not superhuman and still fights an impossible war against evil.

  • @eireisthebest You might be right on that one, its' a good point

  • Fuck Bob Kane. It was Bill Finger who created Batman, all Bob did was trace over other's peoples work. Bob took advantage of Bill's timidness and took all of the credit for Batman.

  • @OwMyBrains no shit, although kane said he always regreted not giving finger a byline

  • @OwMyBrains bill finger wrote batman. but it was indeed bob kane who came up first with the concept, the name "bat-man" and the initial design. bill finger suggested changes to the costume which led to the final design. bill finger also wrote the scripts for the first few issues from dectective comics #27 onward.

in his autobiography bob kane credits bill finger as co-creator and as being a major force in the creation of batman from the very beginning.

but bob kane supplied all the visuals.

  • @kausertellslies Yes but Jerry Robinson created such characters as The Joker and Robin The Boy Wonder as I recall. For me Robinson and Finger have been criminally overlooked in their creation of the Batman mythos and are only now finally getting some recognition.

  • @OwMyBrains Kane created Batman Julie madison Alfred Pennyworth Two Face Vicki Vale Finger created Robin both claim creidit for the Pegiwin. Jerry Robinson threw down a joker card in front of both of them. Thus the Joker was created.

  • what would happen if Superman needed to lift Earth would he be able to do it?

  • superman can do anything.why would he need to lift the earth for though?

  • Batman isn't a superhero because he doesn't have any.he has intellect and gadgets he himself makes because he is super rich.even though he gets called a ''superhero''.

  • Batman's super power is prep time.

  • They misspelled Bruce Timm's name, they spelled it Tim instead of Timm.

  • Flesischer too. They put Fleisher. Good documentary, but they needed a spellchecker. lol

  • Geez, and they screwed up the title. It's Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. Not "Mask of phantasm".

  • That's what we get with comic book articles or comic book historical programmes. Half hearted research and half truths.

  • Mcfarlane*

  • Stan Lee wrote and Jack Kirby drew one of the first stories for the X-Men and Avengers,if im thinking correctly.

  • Jack Kirby created Capt. America but he also created DC stuff like Darkseid and the New Gods-he created alot of shit.Stan Lee and J. Kirby also did alot of stuff together for Marvel Comics.

  • WOW people were stupid to turn down Superman and also i know Todd Macfarlane was turned down with Spawn i think. When i create some characters, people won't like them so maybe Ill start my own company.

  • no no, im sorry bout the note, it was a mistake jajajaja its a good, very good documetary

  • I love spiderman & batman but spidey a little bit more (after reading the original amazing spiderman isu 33 & 12).

  • 121 not 12 hehehe.

  • batman..number 1 comic character of all time. the most tragc hero of all.

  • Somebody should have thought to build the World Trade Center towers out of rubber like that building Superman saved.

  • We should also have thought to have a brightly colored demi-god on standby.

Not for 911 just in general.

  • that is the truest thing i have ever heard...

  • weren't almost all the original creators of super heroes Jewish?

  • 9:14- WTF!?

  • Superman one of the best!

  • let me correct that for you...

superman, spider-man and just about any other SUPERhero ever created suck, and marvel is worst than DC

batman in the other hand is more digestable, he isnt a super hero, I love comics, i'm in an illustration program, but super heros and this corporations that makes them suck, you guys should read real comics with real art, not non-exist4ential genetic art wich is what marvel is all about

  • How is batman not a superhero???

  • because he doesnt have SUPER powers, he is a vigilante, there is nothing super about him, iron-man is kind-off like him, but he is already altered human cus of his heart being a battery, ut batman has no alterations, just gadgets

  • Being a superhero doesnt mean U have to have superpowers. It means possessing skills and abilties beyond those of normal humans. Batman dedicated his life to training and disipline. The skills he learned over many years made him more that a regular human. He may not have powers but he makes up 4 it with his arsonal of weapons, his genius mind, and unparalleled fighting skills. He can hold his known against some of the most powerful beings in comic history and thats not super? Come on!

  • If Batman didn't have kriptonite Superman would DESTROY him.

the Hulk would wreak him no matter what.

    Thor is a god so.....

The flash, Batman could probably take, but he would need to get VERY lucky.

    He could probably beat Spiderman.

And he would have NO CHANCE against Wolverine due to his healing and adimantium skull (can't be knocked out)

Captain America would be a good match though.

  • The one time I can think of when Batman did fight the Hulk he won. He used some sort of gas pellet and when the Hulk held his breath, Batman double kicked him in the stomach so he had to inhale again.

  • Well that doesn't make a whole lot of sense given that bullets seem to cause the Hulk no pain, and a kick even from Bats would probably not be as powerful as a bullet.

Also I once saw Hulk fighting on the moon so I question the effectiveness of knock out gas on him.

  • Hey I didn't write the comic, but it's there and it's canon so making sense doesn't really enter into it. Still, if it helps it was an old comic, back when Hulk was pretty stupid.

The other fight that happened in the same issue was Spider-Man vs either Superman or Superboy, I forget now. That fight ended in a draw which makes even less sense to me, but there you have it.

  • Ok you may be right bout superman, but not Batman. He's one of the best superheroes of all. U must not have seen the dark knight...

  • to centuria13-there is a batman and spiderman comic book, and its awesome!!!two of my favourite super heroes all of time!!!:)))

  • man, I miss those old cartoon tv series. mark hamill pwned as the joker.

  • mark has VA's the joker for a while. even in the new series.

  • the guy who said that superman sucks, hmm you suck

  • man the fliescher cartoons were ahead of their times

  • superman sucks.

  • because you're not american

  • Who cares about being American? I wouldn't want to be Amercian.

  • If Superman sucks then Nick Fury sucks, Nick00Fury

  • AH! Everyone were so much hats bak then. lmao.

superman is never goong to die is he?

like comics are fairly new. People whove seen he first superman comic are still around, but what happens when like 200 years pass?

will dc eventually kill now and forever supeman or batman or wonderwoman?

  • Its amazing to think that those old superman cartoons were drawn and colored completely by hand. They look so much better and more realistic than any other cartoon i know of ever

  • i like Batman more than Superman...what does that say about me?

and also: when i went to see Dark Knight, it was rainy and very dark...when i went to Superman Returns, it was a very nice, happy day outside(i couldn't be bothered to go to the midnight showing of that movie.)

  • Batman is cool. But Spider-Man is the best...

  • i can't decide... it ould be cool if they could make a movie or even just a comic-book cross-over starring Spidey and Bats...!

  • i have a comic where Batman meets Spidey :P Its in a different language though.

  • No prob :)

  • The co-creator of Batman. He wrote the early stories. Thanks to him it was decided that Batman wouldn't be a Superman knockoff in a mask, would be a detective, and things of that nature. Early on,Bob Kane's middle class parents had their lawyers draw up a contract that they made Finger sign stating that Kane was the soul creator of Batman. Bob Kane treated Finger (who was in awe of Kane)like shit and stole other artists ideas. According to other artists, he wasn't a nice guy either.

  • You've got a lot of things wrong. Finger didn't sign away his credit, he signed away his credit as a writter but that was common practice during the Depresion. Kane didn't treat Finger like Crap as a matter of fact was the First to credit Finger for his contributions, AND according to other Artist namely Jerry Robinson, Carmine Infartino and Stan Lee he was a great guy to work/be with. According to both Finger and Kane Batman was a joint production, a Vigilante by Kane and a detective by Finger.

  • Joint production? Not in Kane's eyes, trust. According to Sheldon Moldoff and Steranko, Kane stole other people's ideas, treated Finger like shit and wasn't a nice guy. Perhaps he was (selectively)nice around Lee, Robinson and Infantino but he screwed Finger big time (gave Finger the finger). An article about the "Joint production" was written in an issue of Wizard a year or so ago as well. The subject comes up every few years and the stories are usually similar.

  • And By the Way, there was no Middle Class during the Depression. Kane Had pitched Batman to DC Comics who signed him in without a finished work just a concept(This was during the Golden Age were every Company needed a Superhero no questions asked).

  • Kane's family was financially well off enough to have their lawyer(s)make sure that only he got a created by line in the books. He even lied in interviews stating where he got ideas for the character as if he was the sole creator. You should read Alter-Ego magazine sometime as there was printed examples of his lies there as well.

  • i like reding comics more than wathching T.V. Jack Kirby RULES!

  • I love how Bill Finger is yet again snubbes as being the co-creator of Batman.

  • technically, there was one superhero that came before superman...doc savage...

  • doc savage dusn't have super powers; but i get wut u mean, there was Hercules, the Monkey King way before superman

  • i wasnt talking ancient myths... im talking pulp/comics

and if you read doc savage, the way he is described in the pulp, is pretty close to being a superman...

  • There were the shadow and the phantom also... and doc savage is supposed to be the pinacle of human perfection just like many superheroes. i think there were superpowered heroes before superman but they didnt embody the concept as perfectly. He was the ultimate refination of the idea.

  • i forgot to add that doc savage is described as "the man of bronze"...sound familiar? i think that superman is considered the penultimate superhero because he is more biblical...his kryptonian name is kal el, hebrew for all god and he was sent by his father to be a saviour of earth

  • You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

    (Google "penultimate", why don't you?)

  • ya...i goofed

  • There is just something about Superheros...

I can't wait for The Justice League movie.

    Wahoooo!

  • that cartoon of Superman looked badass and it came out in the 60s. Marvels cartoons in the 60s and 70s looked crappy

  • sorry 40s

  • It was made for the movie theaters so they had a lot more money and talent to work with. It is unfair to compare it to the cheap t.v. animation. It's a lot better than current t.v. animation too.

  • Superman... Jack Kirby... Batman... Stan Lee... Wonder Woman... and Woverine. THE MOST IMPORTANT FIGURES IN COMICS AND SUPERHERO FILMS in that order. OK, maybe Jack should be first on the list but Superman was first in the comics. Spiderman is the most popular but not the most influential. Give your list!

  • In my list, I think the most influential figures were: Superman, Astroboy creator Osamu Tezuka, Spider-Man, and Alan Moore.

  • I agree, when thinking globally, that Osamu Tezuka is a MONSTER figure BUT to leave JACK KIRBY off your list... AAAAAARRRRRGH!!!!! lol!

  • You're right, without Kirby the superhero comics companies like Marvel and DC wouldn't be here today, and Kirby's ability to capture a heroic or normal body in seconds with his pencil sounds outstanding and god-like, as much as Mr Tezuka puts manga on the silver platter.

  • what about captain america?

  • I put him under JACK KIRBY. CAP IS AWESOME!

  • Superman, Batman, Captain American, Justice League, and Spider-man
