1st video that had completely gave step by step instructions, that actually work. I completed my 1st full spool with out cursing, and felt I was in control of my spinning wheel, very relaxing, and the spinning went so quickly. I have a single drive wheel the Hitchhiker.
Hi, I am glad the video helped, I have been thinking about a full one for some time, but finding the time is part of the problem, I am also looking for some editing software that is easy to use. The one I was using doesn't work with our new operating system so will have to look into others.
What kind of wheel do you have? if it is an Ashford you should be able to move the base plate that holds the flyer, if not and there is no way of moving the flyer attachment in line then a stretch drive band should solve the problem. If you contact yopur local wheel supplier many of them sell it by the metre, is it also a single or double drive wheel?
Thanks to you Sue I've gotten past the first "road block". Smooooth treddling. The fishing weights, (I am a fisherwoman too, mostly Walleye), helped in the beginning a lot. ! tied 2 good size lead weights onto one of the wheel spokes. I also started feeding on already spun cheap trash yarn to help me get all things working together with out having to card my arms off. Another day of practice and I'll be working with roving. You are a GREAT teacher. No book would have been as good. THANK YOU !!
I love how you go through all the things that can go wrong and what they mean (can't pull the lead out again, too much tension etc). That is really invaluable information for those of us without a teacher nearby!
I am getting my first spinning wheel in a few days and your WONDERFUL videos are going to be my "teacher" . I can't thank you enough for making them and placing them here so that even all the way "across the pond" people like me can learn from
an expert. I too LOVE the little tricks you share with us that will make us great spinners.
Sue, this is the most helpful video on how t get started I have found on the web! I especially liked the hints about learning how to control the wheel with the feet and also hoe to tell if the tension is ok. I cant believe how much my spinning improved after watching this (Still lumpy and not so consistent but getting better every day) Thanks! And looking forward to looking at your other videos.
I am glad you have found my videos useful, I am hoping to do a full length DVD for sale after the winter, but my editing software has been changed so need to re learn another!!!
Sue, this is all really great information. I really appreciate learning your treadling tip-thanks! I purchased a Wendy Pipy spinning wheel yesterday at an auction- now I want to learn how all about it. Could you suggest sources of information for me? Any information specific to my wheel's operation would be welcome!
Where can I get a spinning wheel? I want to knit something I spun the yarn for. but, I dont know where to get a spinning wheel, what kind to get, how much it will cost or anything, can you help me?
Hi, depends on where you live, but if you look up Ashford on the web you will find stockists near you or look up Spin Off magazine by interweave press is full of adverts. There are many makes of wheel available now, I personally would go for a single drive wheel if buying new there are many wheels available, if you see yourself doing fine spinning then go for as big a drive wheel as you can afford/accommodate and the ability to take both lace & jumbo flyers will give you the most flexibility.
I have a question about the spinning wheel I have... My spinning wheel does not start spinning with the pedal. You have to first start it with your hands and then you can get it going. my spinning wheel was handmade and given as a gift.. Im wondering if this is normal and can still work this way, or if something is wrong with my pedal and I should replace it (the pedal that is)?
The wheel should ideally be possible to start by foot as when you get on to things like Navajo plying you need your hands to hold the yarns ready, Is the wheel stiff to treadle or is it just "locked" in one place. For spinning anti clockwise put the upright Footman just to the right of upright then press the plate with your toe, does this work? If not it sounds like there is a part of the wheel which is too tight.
Very nice video, Sue; thanks! The info about weighting the wheel was new to me (and funny!) and I'll give it a try. My Babe wheel gets "stuck" at the very top and I have to nudge it with my toes.
Me too. Had third attempt yesterday. Found the tensioning part very useful as we couldnt figure out what was going on and it was all knotting up. Know we know. Thanks for posting.
thank you so very much for this informative video. i'm just starting out spinning and there is relatively little practical information available to me.

Wonderfully concise and full of good information. The best, and quickest explanation of how to set the tension that I've ever heard. Thank you.
