i have an SM58 mic.. so should I use a pre-amp for that? I noticed that if I don't use the analog gain of Magic lantern, the recorded sound is very low. But if I do, noise starts to appear.. What's your suggestion?
Thanks for the kind words! I was a bit rushed when I did this, so I didn't get into as much detail about mixers as I had planned to. But, I'll be doing another video soon about feeding external audio into the 5D (using stock firmware), so I'll cover that info then. Stay tuned!
@5DFilmSchool people are recommending field mixers that do not have audio levels or 1Khz tone! like the rolls mx124 promix IV. the price is attractive though. what do you think?
@unprofessionalvids I actually bought a Rolls mixer. It was so horribly noisy that I immediately returned it. If you crank up the gain on a decent mixer (like the Azden or Juicedlink), you'll hear a tiny bit of hiss. On the Rolls, it sounds like someone just started taking a shower next to your microphone. Absolutely awful.
I was left with one question about condenser mics that I've wanted to know for ages. It was explained on wikipedia: "Here, the diaphragm acts as one plate of a capacitor, and the vibrations produce changes in the distance between the plates." And the dynamic ones are based on induction using a coil. So this explains a lot about the quality differences and why condenser mics require power.

Good addition to your clips. Info people can use. I just did a series on 5D filmmaking. Cheers.

This is very well explained.
