i've never ridden a friesian so i dont know... but what makes them so difficult to ride? are they slow? fast? edgey? i dont geddit... they look alright to me! :? x
@leeleeebabesxxx Clumsy may be a harsh word, and they're not clumsy, but it describes them to me. ^^ Heavy, like any big horse. But other than that i think they're allright. :)
It's crazy that a so-called "grand-prix" trainer can allow this to happen.
Why do people not follow the TRUE classical horse training? Not all this rubbish we get today with "beautiful" behind-the-vertical head carriage. It's awful. People need to be re-taught how to ride. Leg without hand. Hand without leg. Why force the horse into a contact which isn't natural? Even the FEI have photos on their webpage of behind the vertical.. what a great advertisement. It really peeves me off.
See the video above of my horse the past year , he was 4 year old. . He wanted to wear his head on his chest all the time and he was behind the hand , . And yes, they can be terrible stubborn !lol
I saw you your trot video, very nice trot and he wears his head correctly. Canter is the hardest gait to work with friesians if you want his head up . : )
mondrono, I do agree--his nose SHOULD be in front of the vertical, and his balance should be on the rear. But, it is not hard to do--she is holding his head in that position. And, if by some small chance she doesn't realize he's behind the vertical, then she shouldn't be training horses in the first place. He is on the forehand BECAUSE he is being held behind the vertical--therefore, he will never have the chance to push from behind and lower the croup.
Young friesians must be ridden forward as she does. So is fine for me :) They are very difficult horses to ride properly. They have tendency to be behind the hand and go downhill, so you need to gallop vigorously forward !
Wow, that's awesome, he can hardly negotiate turns and he's already being ridden behind the vertical at the canter. Poor guy. Pretty horse, shitty trainer.
EquineGal, thanks for your response. I would suggest you look at my other videos for more info about this "shitty" trainer who just happens to be a Swiss Grand Prix Rider.
Horses in Europe are taught differently and some methods have always been a subject of controversy. I am very familiar with the ways in the US since I am from there.
All in all, my guy is happy, healthy and learning timeless dressage movement from someone who knows and has been doing so for many, many years.
Yes, he is behind the vertical as most of young ( and badly ridden adult ) friesians are . I don't support rollkur . But the point is in the difficult of leghten the neck of a young friesian , I know how hard it is .
Their conformation is naturally downhill and they has his balance on the front of his body (sorry, bad english, hope you understand ) so is very difficult to make them engage the hindquarters though the loin pushing active with the their feet under their body . So we musn't ask a young friesian for collection until he wears his balance on the rear , what is very hard to do for both horse and trainer .
What every friesian rider wants is his horse wearing his nose before the vertical , but it is so hard to do with a young friesian ... A lot of work to do :)
Sounds like you know exactly what you are talking about. When I got him, his head was too far down, probably from the way he was trained in Holland. It was a totally false frame. Therefore, I now ride him and let him find that "happy place" with his head which happens about 20-25 minutes into training. See my other trot video.
However, my trainer will do alot of half-halting to coax him into dropping his head which is her way of working with him. He can be really stubborn at times!
NOT only is the horse unbalanced but he's off the vertical, on the forehand, falling out, and not over his back. And it's all because of the rider! Young or old Friesians...Friesian are Friesians, with the correct rider, the horse can learn to be on the vertical, over it's back, and on the aids.
AbeyHorror have you ever ridden a Friesian??? Friesians do everything fast and BIG. It takes a flipping good rider to teach and school a Friesian with a forward going personality. ESP in canter. Mind you I do agree with the hat comment! xxx
evertything looks too fast for the horse, not everything has to be done at top speed, im sure your trainer is a great rider i just think she's a little to advanced for your horse f thats the way she rides.
Not sure I understand the whinging about obscure terminology A and obscure terminiology B as long as the horse is happy.

Just a question. Have you ever ridden a 5 year old friesian?
modrono 3 years ago
I have no problem with the 'forward' aspect of the horse.
He's behind the vertical.
'Poll must be the highest point!'
...Except for training? That doesn't make any sense, and he's just falling onto his forehand because his chest is caving in.
I don't care what the trainer has done--accomplishments don't make you good, it just means that you ride like everyone else.
Welcome to the bandwagon of rollkur, I hope you enjoy your stay. I know your horse isn't.
Things are controversial for a reason.
