I can't believe how long the intro is before the song actually starts. But this is some classic stuff. I don't think I have seen anyone else play the Chapman Stick except for Alfonso Johnson. Great find!
I can't believe this is on Youtube!!!!!! Classic!!!!! Thank the Creator for George Duke, Billy Cobham, John Schofield, Alphonso Johnson, and YOUTUBE for blessing us all with this classic!!!! I first heard this when I was sixteen...1976...Philly...timeless classic!
got this album on wax...what a come up...was at the record store digging pulled this album out saw the right price so i picked it up,didnt know i was gunna hear something so funky,i bought it used, some dumbass didnt want it,what a joke,no soul havin ass humans, feeln really sorry for you,now im the keeper and never gunna let go....an unforgettable jam
@thePhunktOGraphist HAHAHAHA how great same thing happened to me HAHAHA music is calling us I kinda think that, and true this is high sofisticated funky jazz peace
@WahkibaJ Those toms were made by the NORTH company in the 70's. Their inventor, Roger North also had another company make them named MTI. The toms were made out of fiberglass and they stopped making in the early 1980's. - Isn't Wikipedia wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!
This definately the earliest footage i've seen of someone playing the Chapman Stick. I guess Alphonso (along with Levin, of course) were the first two high-profile players to use that instrument which I think first came out in 1975.
This song makes me cry it's so good. Heard it on record (vinyl) tonight at a drum mentor's house who has a ridiculous Cobham collection. Instantly, hearing the first few notes Gave me chills instantly. I mean it was so intense that I do even think I can listen to on mp3 or cd and not feel the same as I did with hearing it on record.
Seeing Alphonso with The Stick, it hit me.. this band could pull off Crimson's Indiscipline if so inclined (if it had been written yet). Scofield does Fripp? It... could.... work!
I went to high school in Vaud. One day, a friend left "Total Eclipse" on my turntable and I became a Cobham fan. When we saw the Montreux Jazz schedule that year, we bought tickets and went - it was a big deal for a couple teenagers so we couldn't believe we were there either. The next year we saw Shakti and Sun Ra and the year after that I became a jazz DJ in the US. Been one ever since.
As soon as I read "We" in your response I had to check your channel...hahaha.
Jammmessenger, I remember seeing you @ Beat Cypher in LA like, um...maybe 4 months back. Anyway...where the heck can I find any new music you've done...
i have a bootleg of the hofstra 1976 show, they played the zappa songs echidna's arf and uncle remus, amazing show, excellent band...Cobham is the greatest power drummer in the world.
What great memories i took a hot babe to a concert at hoftra university i think 1976 she loved it Duke, cobham i think stanley clarke at that time also was there.scofield etc,. david sanborn was a no show he ws sick anyhow. and wow ..I had great sex that night,...hahahah
Best drummer, best jazz guitarist, best new talented bassist, most soulful, jazziest keyboarder and a she-alien with a "mighty low voice". Still one of my favourites !

But he used the album version. I think that this one is way hotter...

No the sample in the song is a flute sample no keyboard!
P0rn0ralle84 2 years ago
Sorry You are wrong . It was a sample of the same kind of Moog synth in this video .
However with a sine wave , not the square wave you hear on this video.
jammmessenger 2 years ago
Yes he did sample this song , but not this version.
We got it off George Duke & Billy Cobham live in Europe.
Good ear my man .
