Dont be afraid to pick up and move on because home, or wherever you're leaving, will always be there as will most friends, family, etc. Change can be a very good thing sometimes and occasionally a necessity.
Reminds me of a guy who I played in a band with growing up. Great guy and great guitar player. We had talked about maybe playing together again. A month later he developed Schizophrenia and took his life
Someone sent me the link for Bobby Jean a couple of days ago. It reminds me of a guy I spent a lot of time with and was madly in love with during the early years of life. Life takes it's own direction over the years but some memories never fade.
This is a great song. Brings you back to some place and some one, who some how touched your soul... Can have its own meaning for any one. If you can not relate, then you have just never felt it & would not understand. For me?...here's to my beautiful little Secaucus angel....Thought I was "stuck with you". Miss you...
This song always reminds me of the drummer in my first band. We used to rehearse in my basement every day after school. But one day he came by my house and told me that he was moving to Sydney. And that the rock n roll dreams we swore all those nights were washed away. He just didn't feel the same about music anymore. He said no one believes that we'll ever get out from the factories that built this city. But this song reminds me, why Im still holding on to that dream. One day I'll rock for you!
Well, Bobby Jean, as we know, is the story of a friendship lost (temporarily) when Steve Van Zandt left the Bruces band. Both of the two mothers were from Calabria, a region of southern Italy (now unfortunately famous for its mafia - called the "Ndrangheta" - which controls much of the cocaine around).
In this song feels a strong bond of blood, which contains this common origin, mixed with the history of American "streets". Simply a Masterpiece....
Bobby Jean is a song about Stevie leaving the band but since Clarence has passed away it's hard to not get teary eyed listening to this song and thinking about him..RIP Big Man
@GuitarTosh007 It just doesn't seem real. I keep remembering all the great shows I saw & I can't picture them w/o Clarence. Danny was a loss, yes & they did go on OK w/o him. But, the Big Man? How? Yet you know Bruce will try to. B/C that's who he is. Before all this happened, Clarence said he was hoping for a tour next year.
So I think Bruce will honor that wish...for Clarence. No one will ever fill his empty space in our hearts on that stage, regardless. Reminder for us; how fragile life is.
The reason The Boss puts on such a great show has less to do with his musical ability and singing, and has everything to do with the joy and love that goes into every performance. The guys have a blast on stage, and the audience gets to come to the party.
We'll all miss Clarence, who was the soul of E-Street. Rest in peace, dude.
Repose en paix Big Man, tes solos m' on fais, me font, et me feront toujours frissonner, Toi, Bruce et le E Street m' avaient aidés a construire ma vie Merci, RIP CLARENCE
@dlc1119 Goodbye Clarence Clemmons... This song got me through some tough times after a friend died much, much too young... I never got to say goodbye and that still haunts me to this day.
Now we went walking in the rain talking about the pain from the world we hid
Now there aint nobody nowhere nohow gonna ever understand me the way you did
Maybe you'll be out there on that road somewhere...
RIP Big Man. You have been at the centre of so many unforgettable songs, and this is one of the very best. So sad that you're no longer with us - you will be missed! x
Awwwww. This is my favourite song of ALL TIME and wouldn't be half as great as it is without The Big Man's contribution. So bummed out that he he's gone. :(
Haven't read all the comments, so this may have already been pointed out. Bobby Jean is Steve Van Zant, who head just left the band to pursue his solo career. Bruce wrote this as a goodbye to his friend--he just put it thru the prism of a male/female relationship.
@fringer166 One of the greatest SOLOS ever, sax or not. Before I officially heard about Clarence today, I thought of this tune and that solo. When I heard the news, and turned on this tune, oh man.
I can close my eyes and remember August 9th 1985 Bruce Springsteen Concert Tour, Soldier Field, Chicago....My girlfriend and I listening to this song and so many more. This song is from the sound track that is my life.

Maybe best or very wonderful live performance of this song at his peak time (in a way). He might wore a torn tunktop showing his woriking class image to his audiences. To think about it, he is also a grunge rocker. Anyway, I have never heard another song which depicts male friendship so passionately other than this song.
this song was written when steve was still in the band -- in fact he was playing on this album. it seems like springsteen dedicated the song to him in later performances, but overall i think the rumor that it was written specifically for steve is false.
This is such a guy's buddy song. As close as a man will ever say to another man. And to know that it is about Bruce and Little Stevie makes it even cooler.
this song alwasy makes me think of my HS buddy, who died in our senior year. He was a huge Springsteen fan, and it's exactly the way I felt at the time and still do...I always wished I could have just said "good bye"...

I know that you are out there and I know that you can't hear me sing this or any other song and even though all the "miles" are between us, I promise that you will hear me again baby. You know that I think of you every day since I wake up and until I go to bed for dreaming about you.
I miss you baby. I miss you so much that it hurts, but I love more than nothing in this whole damned world so I will hold on until you are back in arms again. I promise.
I always think of you Susan A. Good luck to you wherever you are now. Whenever I hear this I think of you my friend and wonder if you ever hear it. A great friend when we were kids.
THIS is what is missing in today's music, at the risk of sounding like an old man (41)! The emotion & heart in this song is amazing! EVERY note builds onto the next! GREAT, SAD SONG!
@jrldorado The Black guy is Clarence Clemons who has been a prominent member of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band since 1972. And can't a song have a groove and be heartfelt at the same time. I am sure he's not missing the point, especially considering the emotional impact of his sax playing at the end of the song.
@bmnatty Yeah. I have researched about him and learned how great he is since I saw the video. I only have much respect to Bruce and everyone in his band. It's just to me, he really looked like he was "missing the point" in the parts I pointed out. I just thought it was funny and then posted a comment. That's all. :)
thats whats beautiful about any songwriter and the artistry of songwriting... it can be heard by millions and have a million different meanings to someone... all I know is I relate this song to a girl I once knew. lol
Bruce is actually speaking of lead guitarist Steve Van Zandt, who abruptly quit the E Street Band in the early eighties and whom Bruce was buddies with, as the song says, since they were sixteen. Notice Steve is not in the group in the video.
My top three always change. This used to be in my top 3, and probably will be again. I listen to my top 10 so often, that I get temporarily saturated with them, then move to a new top 10. My cycle is about 2 years. That's because he has too many good songs.
Omg, now I'm crying. R.I.P Clarence. You & Bruce had the most strongest bond in the whole world :(

Have u lied? Have u stolen? Jesus said if you look at a woman with lust you have committed adultery with here in your heart. have u done that?
If God judge’s u by the Ten Commandments will u be innocent or guilty? Heaven or Hell? Does this concern you?
Do u need a Savior from your sins?

I know that you are out there and I know that you can't hear me sing this or any other song and even though all the "miles" are between us, I promise that you will hear me again baby. You know that I think of you every day since I wake up and until I go to bed for dreaming about you.
I miss you baby. I miss you so much that it hurts, but I love more than nothing in this whole damned world so I will hold on until you are back in arms again. I promise.
LOVE YOU.
ALWAYS.
ALWAYS.

GREAT, SAD SONG!

rumor is he wrote this for Steve when he left the band

Bruce is awesome in this video. I love this song but the black guy was so missing the point of the song, dancing merrily in his bright red get up.
LOL @ 1:23 to 1:32 XD
jrldorado 1 year ago

That's all. :)

what emotion and power when he says ''good luck good bye baby'' fantastic

The song is open to interpretation I think. It could be about many things
It could be about Steve leaving
It could be an anti-war song
It could be about a past love
Some say it's also about Bruce saying goodbye to his depression that he suffered from in 82'
BRUUUUUUUCE!!!
TehRatchet 1 year ago
@TehRatchet It's about Steve leaving... No doubt about it. God bless both.

thats whats beautiful about any songwriter and the artistry of songwriting... it can be heard by millions and have a million different meanings to someone... all I know is I relate this song to a girl I once knew. lol
krissikixx 1 year ago
Bruce is actually speaking of lead guitarist Steve Van Zandt, who abruptly quit the E Street Band in the early eighties and whom Bruce was buddies with, as the song says, since they were sixteen. Notice Steve is not in the group in the video.

this in the top 3 springsteen songs anyone?
afcsang 2 years ago
My top three always change. This used to be in my top 3, and probably will be again. I listen to my top 10 so often, that I get temporarily saturated with them, then move to a new top 10. My cycle is about 2 years. That's because he has too many good songs.
