merc260ss, I'm not sure what Shecky308s experience is, but I have seen many hundreds of cottonmouths all three subspecies throughout their range. I spent several years working with a group collecting cottonmouths for scientific research in SC. Shecky308 sounds like the only person here who knows anything about cottomouths other than old wives tales. They aren't aggressive, they don't chase you, they don't drop out of trees to attack, etc. Those stories simply aren't true.
to the big dummy who said cottonmouths aren't aggressive.....apparently you've never had one come after you! of all the snakes Ive ever encountered, they are far and away the most ornery.
I dont even live near water and we have cotton mouths and copperheads... but when it rains the ditches fill up... they come in our yard.... so you dont have to live near a body of water just to have them if your anywhere near woods is a chance you have them...
i live by cotton mouths they dont just swim in swamps i lie on the lake and theyre every we live on the water with cotton mouths and theyre little buddy copper heads!
One day I will post a picture of the rare but deadly Copper Mouthed Coral Rattler. They are found only in Southwest Louisiana (Acadiana to those in the know) and are so mean they follow you on vacation and rent a room net to yours just to get a chance to bite you. One simple look from this snake is enough to put down an entire army of herpatolo.....eh, herpa...um....herp...Those people what catch snakes for fun.
normally agkistron will not attack you, first they will only gape[show the inside of the ir cotton-white mouth].This is the beginning of their telling you to stand your distance.Since you live in the range of agkistrodon you should learn how to re-locate and not to destroy. These snakes were here before you and me.Ask me how to relocate, thanks ! Ive been teaching people how to do this for over 40 years.!
