A seriously awesome and even frightening track. If Gram Parsons rubbed off on them, it is here: their ability to sound Christian, to sound afraid, but remain aloof. Yet there is an authenticity to this which can't be faked.
This song was so important to the album. It gave you such a feel of where the album was recorded. Sort of reminds me of Shoes by The Electric Flamingos
@shanehenning26 ..greetings shano...........long time no see dude...............i agree this is a great song................are you still after that bad a s s gossip from the stones '69 stop-over in tokyo?.........go to "chantoozies wanna be up saw1110" and press "see all" to find the 3 hidden comments................lizzie sends her best................hope you are well. regards.
When I first listened to the album back in the day (yes--I bought this album in the fall of 1972). . .this one was my fave! I loved the driving beat and the lyrics are provocative in so many ways--it is, as BloozeDaddy76 said above: "rather atmospheric gospel number"!
this song has alot of instruments and LOTS of background vocals, but the production was purposeful in the way it's almost muted. My ex used to tell me who produced this album but I can't recall the guy's name now. Anyway, the whole record is a perfect mix of talent and excellent production. This song is a key example and one of my favorites on Exile.
took this to 8th grde and have my buddy listen on hdphnes in the AV lab....I wanted to do music like this....never got close..TWaits -That song had a big impact on me, particularly learning how to sing in that high falsetto, the way Jagger does. When he sings like a girl, I go crazy...nody does it like Mk...this is just a tree of life...is the watering hole. Kth plays his ass off
A cover of the song is featured on the Blind Boys of Alabama’s album, Spirit of the Century.
@chinahands100 absolutely! so Tom Waits. so Swordfishtrombones and Mule Variations at the same time! I didn't know that. I love how much sense it makes.
I was thrilled that TW did vocals on Harlem Shuffle with the Stones. Sadly I couldn't distinguish him so well :(
i had to listen to this after the crappy phish version (and im saying that in full knowledge that phish is my favorite band) . Im sorry but phish fucked up the atmosphere of this song.
this song is amazing. Just a pure gospel jam, nothing more than a good southern jam session. Not sure how a bunch of white brits do it like this, but they do.
Love this track,,,,,,Gospel / Blues flavor......I love the guy with 3 billiard balls in his mouth,,,,He is in Ripley's Believe it or Not Museum.......
I used to think this was the most useless track on the whole album, but now I see it is a rather atmospheric gospel number that grows on you. Very hypnotic.

The great Bobby Whitlock on electric piano here really fills out the "gospelness" of this track.

May I recommend the book 'An Essential Guide To Music In The 1970s' by Johnny Zero. The author is a big fan of this track.
