This was a very good documentary, but I don't know that I agree entirely with the end view. Historians comment on how surprising it is how quickly society normalized after the bubonic plague, which wiped out a third to a half of the European population. Things changed, obviously, but records indicate that it actually initiated the Renaissance period and show that the Industrial Revolution has its beginnings there; the invention of the printing press and so on.

A very good story...I'm not too down about it though. Mankind has survived these Dark Ages before. After the fall of Rome, Europe entered the Dark Ages and endured the horrors of Islamic and Mongol invasions, the Vikings, the Black Death, and a complete collapse of learning and science (preserved only by studious Monks) but then emerged to glorious rebirth in the Renaissance. I'm confident with our combined knowledge, modern civilization would be reestablished in the span of a century or two.

In all reality, if this happened today, I believe basic electrical power and transmission as well as simple fossil fuel refining would be established in as little as 5 years or so. The big ctites wouldn't be running again, but smaller communities would be thriving. The infrastructure is still there, people will use it to their advantage to redevelop a sense of what was normal. The world went from horse and buggy to the electronic age in less than a 100 years, it would all happen again quicker.

I'd be willing to bet that at any given time, even in a disaster senario, you have access to salt. In the abscence of antibiotics you could toss some salt into the wound. It'll kill all the bacteria by dehydrating them.

apply fire in fast passes immediately after a cut without clean water. also - superglue, gel is best, is excellent for sealing up wounds. its saved my ass on major wounds many times. stings a bit but doit. your body will work it out eventually

A very good story...I'm not too down about it though. Mankind has survived these Dark Ages before. After the fall of Rome, Europe entered the Dark Ages and endured the horrors of Islamic and Mongol invasions, the Vikings, the Black Death, and a complete collapse of learning and science (preserved only by studious Monks) but then emerged to glorious rebirth in the Renaissance. I'm confident with our combined knowledge, modern civilization would be reestablished in the span of a century or two.

In all reality, if this happened today, I believe basic electrical power and transmission as well as simple fossil fuel refining would be established in as little as 5 years or so. The big ctites wouldn't be running again, but smaller communities would be thriving. The infrastructure is still there, people will use it to their advantage to redevelop a sense of what was normal. The world went from horse and buggy to the electronic age in less than a 100 years, it would all happen again quicker.

I suppose the slightly unsettling thing that should be acknowledged is that this thing will happen - sooner or later. Why? Because it's happened many times before. The scale each time was larger because of population growth so the next time, the scale will be enormous (from our perspective). I suppose it just has to be accepted. If you happen to be a survivor (I fully expect I will not be - I've never been that lucky), then live up to your new title - and make the most of it!
