I would never want to switch off the engine, I would be way too scared that it wouldn't start again! Says a lot about the R1's reliability though I must admit. When I saw this bike at the mcn show, it didn't look TOO bad
Who cares who did it first or on what bike, the fact of the matter is he accomplished something hardly anyone can say they've done or will ever do, yet alone on a sport bike.
Already been done... Look up "R1 goes extreme"... Guy from the findlands did a 5 year trip around the world on a R1. And took a R6 up to the artic last winter...
Man was this guy trying to do a mission impossible but hey i take my hat off to him for having the balls to travel around the world in a R1 where most takes the KTMs+BMWs and others.
But it also shows how tuff the sports bikes are in the desert but must be a bitch to handle in the sand by the looks of it.
Kick ass! Sure there are bikes MUCH better suited to this trek, but it's cool to see something swim upstream and test themselves (and the bike).

Sjaak Lucassen already travelled with a R1 around the world,it took him 5 years and he is from The Netherlands..not finland
And he went on a R1 to the Artic..not R6 ;)
type " Sjaak Lucassen" in searchbar,then youll find his video's.
Nelis280 3 years ago
Nick has been doing this a lot longer that Sjaak. This is his final trip, not his first.
motorcyclenewsdotcom 3 years ago
Alot longer?? Sjaak Lucassen crossed the world in 1995 on a Honda CBR.Nick Sanders his first trip ever was in 1993 or 1994 on a indian.
Nelis280 3 years ago
Actually it was 1992, which in my book still qualifies as a lot longer
motorcyclenewsdotcom 3 years ago 4

ericpog87 3 years ago 3
@motorcyclenewsdotcom
but not on a racing bike an indian chief is a bit easier because of it's seat-handle bar positioning and because it has more torque on lower revs.
terror2thecore 8 months ago
@motorcyclenewsdotcom
does it matter both stupit to do it on an R1, there are bike out there that are a lot more qualified.
