  • Thanks for the video my question i dont think you were able to tight the harmonic balancer bolt to 150 ft pound , or that was fine the way you did it, i am getting the parts to do mine now , nice video!

  • @estrelladelnorte1308 That was one of my point of concern. After this job I got new 30 gallons air compressor and a new serious impact wrench for next time.

  • thanks for posting this. how much were the parts and how long did it take you?

  • @redentor78 The total cost was around $100, not sure now. I took me about 8 hours to do the job. If you remove the video camera setting time and my lack of experience time, then the job should be done in about 4 hours or less with the help of this video.

  • @MrEnergyFree

I recently purchased the Timing belt and water pump repair kit from Courtesy NIssan and I believe it was over 300.00 USD. Around 370.00 if I remember correctly. with shipping. w w w . courtesynissan

  • @chews4life I got my from ebay and you can get a timing belt, water pump and tensioner for as low as $93.95 today. Probably your is better quality.

  • I have a Pathfinder 96 XE

  • thanks for the video

  • is it tdc on compression or intake for proper alignment

  • @purefriction1 I not sure. I just remove the old belt and put a new one without moving any thing.

  • Thanks a ton for taking the time and effort to make this vid! Helped a bunch!

  • great video man

  • lol the close up to the packages was funny

  • Thanks for showing me this procedure, I finished replacing the timing belt for my 1997 nissan pathfinder without any problem. It saves me some bucks, now I can use that money to take a vacation. Thanks for sharing your knowledge to other. Thanks,

    Weekend mechanic from Jersey

  • 1)I was wondering if you tried using a pneumatic to remove the crankshaft bolt at first? Then no luck you deferred to the wedged breaker bar method with starter to undo it?

    2) Did you change your thermostat? I didn't see?

3)Also it seemed like you had the new timing belt on there tightened pretty well, and covered, then you uncovered the cover and played with the belt tensioner again? How did you know it was off setting after you covered it?

4)didpressure water work for gascket removal?

  • @chews4life

1- Yes, I used the pneumatic tools first with no luck, then I when to the old trick of starter. I recently got a new heavy duty pneumatic wrench.

    2- No thermostat change.

3- If you have set the belt correct with all the teeth inside the pulley, the teeth will not skip unless you loose to much the belt tensor. Still you must double check by turning several times and check for alignment.

    4- No, I use a scraper very gentle .

  • Wow!!! There are a lot of bolts and pieces being removed to get in there , it seems like there would be a lot of stuff all over the ground and easy to lose screws or get messed up. This is truly inspirational. My Frontier 2002 has 222,000 and its due!! I don't know if I want to tackle this job, seems like a lot going on. But maybe after watching this video and studying a little more I will build up the courage to tackle it. Changing the sparks plug was a challenge! but fun.

  • Hello my friend aim ready to change my timing belt on my xterra i need to know how your disable the ignition are your remove the spark plugs cable from your distribuitor?and what tools are you using?

  • @issada2

Remove distributor cap to disable ignition.

  • Great video. Wish you posted it in real time with commentary. I have to do my water pump and belts. I have an '02 with 105k on the motor.

  • @BrushWrks

Very long video in real time.

  • Wow! Had mine changed on My 01,at 80,000..manifold cracked and dealership replaced manifold, timing belt, water pump and drive belts probably a couple of other things too..sitting on 140,000 now..

  • I have yet too see one I worked on these Nissan turds most of my life,it seems like... I just fixed one the other day the supposedly mechanic cranked that engine so much the battery died he gave up at that point... I took distributor cap off and low and behold no movement during cranking...pulled covers off and hello belt with missing teeth... Put new belt on and tensioner...good as new... Maybe I should post video of my daily Nissan crap ha ha

  • First off jeez u took a long ass Time taking off that radiator and of course u need a special tool unless u want to destroy your harmonic balancer...while your replacing your timming belt it's always a good idea to replace Cam and crank seals aswell as the waterpump....and remember this is a non interference engine so In a case where the belt goes bye bye u have a chance of saving it...

  • @elsifu85

This engine is interference engine so in case if the timing belt breaks the pistons will hit the valves and the motor will have to have a complete overhaul before it will run again

Remember that Nissan Frontier has several engines for same model.

  • Good job,

  • Hi there,

How do you disable the engine ignition ?

  • @cognos444

Disconnect battery to disable the engine ignition. I use the starter motor to break free the wheel.

  • Great job!

1- Is this the first timing belt change?

2- Can you list some of the special tools you used such as the ones for removing the tensioner, the special wrench you used to tighten up the crank, remove the fan clutch and any other special tool that I may require?

3- Did you change the valve cover gasket?

4- How long it took you to finish the job?

5- If in the event you notice engine oil leak, is there any seal in that area I can remove and change? Thanks in advance

  • @cognos444

1- Yes, this is the first timing belt change in this car.

2- No special tools required. Good set of socket wrench.

    3- NO.

4- About 6 hours. Can be done in less with experienced. Took longer because my experienced and video camera.

5- It is recommended to change the from crank from seal.

  • I'd like to know who the music is by in your video,BTW this video has been a great resource for me as I do the same repair on my 2002 frontier. It's great that you do the whole thing from start to finish. The only thing is I wish I could slow it down in some spots, plus it would be cool to hear what you have to say as you do the repair.Still great job and thanks for posting this video

  • what music is this?

  • @massdiffer

    Music by 3 Legged Monkey

  • Being a retired mechanic, I can say what a pleasure it is to see you at your craft. That crank bolt removal was classic, most times I put a breaker bar on it and crank the engine over to break it loose, pretty sure this is what you did here?

Tools and the brain to use them is what it takes, obviously you have both. Excellent work my friend, the creation of this, with the video editing is over the top.

Superb, just wonderful work, Thank you

  • Thanks.

Yes I removed the crank bolt with engine starter. Very easy, hold the breaker bar to the chassis on the direction of the engine rotation, disable the engine ignition and crank the engine for few seconds.
