There were ideas for lunar missions with Gemini, lunar landings and lunar orbit missions. Different boosters were suggested.

Gemini may have been the point at which the US overtook the USSR. It could change its orbit in terms of longitude and latitude at a time when Soviet spacecraft could only change altitude.

Also, they were flying a lot more missions than the Soviets--ten in two years, basically.

And even though the Soviets spacewalked first, the Gemini astronauts did it more and took better pictures.

Anyway, this shows you the progress of space travel. They didn't just go to the moon in one shot, they had to perfect a number of procedures. The early missions proved something was possible, which was used for the next mission, and that mission proved something for the next mission.

Great footage...where did you get it? This was one of NASA's greatest achievements prior to circling the moon (Apollo 8) and landing on the moon (Apollo 11). The Gemini 7/6a missions set a number of records, and marks the exact point that the United States overtook and passed the Soviet Union in the space race. Thanks.
