As of the season 6 premiere of LOST, the monster is confirmed to be Jacob's nemesis. It claims to not be a monster, and insists its a "who" not a "what". So apparently it is some sort of shapeshifting person. Probably the same race as Jacob.

i think the monster in lost was first created as a guard for the dharma initiative...remembering that Benjamin Linus has the ability to control what it does...(like when he sends the monster after the marines in the fourth season) i believe it isnt necessarily a bad monster...

I agree with MarionettePrincess, but I also believe the monster can take the form of anyone who has died or is found dead on the island, and that it can leave the island. Main examples: Yemi and Christian Shephard.

I believe that Christian Shepard was actually restored to life by Jacob, that's why his coffin was empty when Jack found it near the caves. But anyway I think they will leave it till the last season to explain exactly what the monster is, can't wait!

I think it's a shape shifting organism and it's smoke form is a very clever way of scaring the hell out of the losties. Rather than it be Jacob himself, I think it's more likely to be controlled by Jacob.

I'd like to just say that while most people seem to think the monster takes on the form of dead people etc, nowhere has it actually been shown transforming into them, so perhaps the island's ghosts are merely connected to the monster somehow, perhaps they control it.

i think in lost they are already dead because the girl from the helicopter crash said they found the plane at the bottom of the ocean and all the bodies were there.i think they are just lost souls cause they had things they wanted to do but cudnt like locke never went hunting,jack never fixed the problem between his dad and him.hurley wanted to stop his curse etc.they were given a chance to do all those things cuz jack kept seeing his father.now lokce can walk and hunt.

I think that the Others somehow staged the deaths so no one would look for the survivors, and that way, no one would find the obviously super-wanted Benjamin Linus. He probably made this happen with his limitless resources of people, money, and violence. Just my theory.

The smoke is believed to be a form that Jacob can take, or possibly Cerberus, as there are three small clouds which come together to form that large Cloud.

My other theory is that it isn't actually made of Smoke, but rather theres something inside that emits smoke.

Anyway, when the camera pans through the monster you hear the clicks and u see flashes in the smoke, if u pause it in time u see ecko holding his borther, him standing in a doorway and something eles. You just have to get smack in time
