What I love about this man, is that he is so original. And by original I mean simple, I will even dare to say, his stuff is TOO simple. I don't mean that in a negative way though, most musicians think, "okay, I've got to be original, so I have to play something that is REALLY hard to follow and complicated." This man does the opposite, and plays simple notes, and yet produces the most beautiful sound in this song. His simpleness, I will say for this song, is what makes it absolutely beautiful.
So we have 1)Barn Owl, Night Killer 2)The Lord God Bird, and 3)Majesty Snowbird (one of my favorite songs by anyone)....is it safe to say Sufjan is taking a break from the states to make an entire album about birds? Fine by me...Sufjan can do no wrong.
I've been saying this for years. Sufjan's hinted that New Jersey is next n the list--I suspect he'll do double-duty and make NJ an all-bird, piano-based album. (At least, I hope so!)
i agree. and the only time he mentioned new jersey was with a little sarcasm, saying it would be "new jersey - the musical!", so i think ill have to wait for my home state a while longer : (
I wish the EP version was more like this. I would do almost anything for a quality recording of this performance.

I think a better word than 'simple' would be 'pure'. All of his songs sound very personal and full of spirit.
He really lets his heart out in the music.

It's an old song from an album that he wrote while in college but never released at least on a large scale.
