The good old days of romance when lesser teams had hopes of securing domestic and European titles by beating favourites. Gone are such day with the injection of big money by foreign owners. Villa and Forest winning EC, Derby, Forest, Villa, Everton winning the League Championships. Sunderland, Southampton, Wimbledon, West Ham, Everton winning FA cups, Wolves, Forest, Villa winning league cups. Upsets did happen and were much celebrated.
what the fuck are you going about you sad cunt. fuck off thicko. what glory ha ha ha. bunch of useless twats with no history. now fuck off you thick cunt
craig gordon is a top keeper i do think sunderland will lose him and in surprised hes not been mentioned to replace van der saar at mufc or for arsenal
is that right horswill and kerr were fucking each other. 2 ugly cunts as well. as for your old cunt manager stokoe, he was as bent as a thai tranny. now go and piss off, you bent bastards.
@peter7409 fuck you go watch something were you dont kick off at some thing you no you dont like before you watch it because you just piss on peoples glory
shut the fuck up, you sad twats. sunderland , what a joke you are. fucking wankers. the whole country knows you are absolute shit, shit fans, shit town, and a fucking shit team. you cant speak properly. you sound like retards when you speak. i remember when i went to see rangers play, at gary bennetts testimonial at joker park. the sunderland fans couldnt run fast enough. you took a lot of casualties that night. you were fucking soft as shit. and still are. we took the place over. so fuck off
@peter7409 Ha ha, we are evil, hark coming from a Leeds fan. Leeds are notoriously the dirtiest cheats in football with vicious fans. Clough was right you won everything through cheating, you were prepared to break legs and end careers to win matches, Leeds epitomise Evil!
"Hawaah the lads" - XD Posh attempt at mackem there like. :P
I just got chills. I am far too young to remember this, but my gosh, it looks like it was one hell of a day! 37 years is too long without another trophy though ;) Let's hope the lads can do something in the next few seasons to give me stories to tell my kids. "I remember where I was back in 20XX when Sunderland lifted the FA cup.."
I was 10 in 1973, and I really wanted Sunderland to win, even though at the time I supported Norwich! The goal was a cup final 'great' from Ian Porterfield, but the thing I remember most was the fantastic save by Jim Montgomery, and to this day I still say it was the best save EVER! but the most poignant moment for me was at the final whistle when Bob Stokoe ran the from the halfway line to hug Jim Montgomery, for the save that kept Leeds out! wonderful memories!
And as has been previously pointed out, proof also, that favourites do not necessarily always win. As was also shown by Southampton (76), Coventry (87) and Wimbledon (88) to name but three.
Another really underdog yet entertaining cup final was last year when Portsmouth met Cardiff, two teams that had won nothing since the thirties. It makes a change from some of the borefests we've had when Man U meet Arsenal or Chelsea. 1973 was the biggest surprise, though, but even more surprising in recent years is the decline of Leeds, now forced to visit Brunton Park instead of Old Trafford, and the relegation of Newcastle I find hilarious.
Sunderland were the underdogs in 73 and Leeds were similar to Man U now. However, Sunderland proved that underdogs can win and this is still fondly remembered on Wearside now. As a Carlisle fan, we also like Mr Stokoe as he got us promoted in 1982 and we currently have one of your old players Kavanagh at Brunton Park, so respect. Also my brother is a massive Black Cats fan and they are my second team.
I never understood why Cherry lay on the ground for so long. If he'd got up right away he might have been able to score when the ball came off the bar.
I remember the save on Tv (BBC) commentator : "It hit the crossbar" and me in the living room jumping up and shouting "NO! it was a save"!! I will always remember it.
I was behind the goal jimmy montgomery save was just magic, both saves in one second...nothing compares to this and Monty had been doing this all his long career for sunderland a true gentleman
forget banks etc watch this over and over lorimer buried it...where did Jimmy come from to tip it onto the bar
Aye his dress sense was stuck around 1953, not 1973, but who cares he was a good manager for both Sunderland and Carlisle, who he rescued from a bad period to go into the old Second Division.
sunderland could be lifting the fa cup in 2012 i think they have a very good chance

WHERE'S THE PROPER COMMENTARY? David Coleman's yell of PORTERFIELD is far more famous than Brian Moore's commentary.

I remember right near the end of this match Leeds keeper Harvey pulled off a great save to prevent it being two nil. Was a great save.
MySilverr 1 year ago
Brian Moore calls him Porterhale and is very slow to spot the goal as well as the save - not good in an FA Cup Final and one of the very best.

This was a memorable match to watch (and coming from non-Sunderland fan by the way).
Just about the whole country was behind Sunderland that day. It was marvellous to see Bob Stokoe run on and hug Jimmy Montgomery at the end.
I recall the Russian gymnast Olga Korbut was in television studio and when asked who she wanted to win, replied," The little ones."

Jimmy Montgomery was an England Under 23 keeper but never got his chance in the full side because of Banks, Bonetti, Stepney etc.
Ian Porterfield was an under ratted manager, and as a Chelsea fan he did a good job at the club in difficult circumstances.

Such is the "magic" of the FA Cup.
