I had a rather funy experience with the "Loreley". Born and raised in Bavaria until I was 8 years old, I had never been to the Rhine nor had I heard of that song. Then my family migrated to Australia. On my first day at an Australian primary school I entered the classroom and they were singing the first vers of "Loreley" (in more or less bad German but nevertheless)! The teacher asked me if I knew all the verses but I had no idea. My mum finally helped out, she knew them although from Selesia.

"die lorelei", by Friedrich Silcher, (1837), song about a maiden on the Rhine River, near Boppard. You can GET rest at 'St.Gore" and you can watch the water's stream around the little hill where the maiden live ........ You should find the lyric at : google search/die lorelei/lyric

Im Ausland ist der Ausflug zur Lorelei sehr bekannt. Aber wenn man von einer Deutschlehrerin mit dem Buch der Lieder bis aufs Blut geärgert wird, dann ist die Lorelei auch nicht so toll. Wenn man dann auch noch mit der Dame von Heidelberg mit dem Schiff zur Lorelei fährt, dann gibt es nur eines weinen oder Wein und wir haben uns für den Wein entschieden, damit wir den Tag überleben. aber lange, lange ist es her.

aaaha..... Just back from a two day cycling trip to Koblenz long the river. Through out the trip I was all lit looking at the surrounding. Rhine valley is truly beautiful. Seriously thinking of take the same route over more number of days when the hills and vineyards are green. Loreley was one mesmerizing spot. Sadly cud not spend much time with her ;-)
