Rik is pure fun in a man's body. I once had the luck to see him on an empty London street. I called his name, approached, and told him I was a fan. Rik is up there with the modern comedy greats in the uk. Check out The Young Ones, Bottom, and Filthy Rich & Catflap. He's been doing a bit more serious tv acting recently i believe, as well as some theatre. Rik also made a few appearances in Blackadder which are absolutely classic.
@ods1ODS Rik Mayall was one of the dominating forces in British comedy through the 80's and 90's often with his long time collaborator Ade Edmondson. Unfortunately he had a serious quad bike accident in 1998 so has not been as prolific since then.
David letterman was very horrible and bad mannered in this interview. He made Rik Mayall very uncomfortable. He always made Richard Simmons uncomfortable in interviews. If You want a a laugh watch him on the video with the cobra

Aside from Fawlty Towers most great British sitcoms last for more than 12 episodes. Dad's Army lasted 9 years, The Two Ronnies lasted 15.
And look at The Simpsons and even Frasier. Once they get past 8 years their quality started to fade. But instead of ending they kept going.
