Yes they did ask him but he didn't speak and when he did, no one understood. That's part of the mystery. Was he keeping a secret? was he mentally ill or traumatized? etc. it's one of this region's most enduring mysteries.

Thanks for the comment. I know the swashbuckling pirates is a tempting theory and the one that everyone back home clings to. But really, nah. Poor guy just spent the night in the freezing cold in the woods and later had to have both legs amputated so gangrene wouldn't spread. Saved his life. But just a regular landlocked surgeon, YARR Matey. There be no pirates in this tale I'm afraid.
