@viskitjarommit The basset hounds changed in LOOKS, it used to be much smaller in build but its NOT fat just bigger built, i know they are prone to health problems like all pedigree dogs but they can run, just like a dachshund can still run, i know because ive seen them. Be more concerned for the British bulldog, breeders have bred them to have massive heads with serious health and breathing problems just for LOOKS, even though i do like pedigree dogs its cheaper to own a cross breed.

@D86shanks no their not. if you bring them on walks when they are puppies, or let them run in a fenced in area they are not lazy. they love to play and can run around for hours. :) and dont let them run around without a leash. if they pick up a scent of something it is hard to get their attention.

nice attention span, thats what i love about Bassets. The concentration on the chew has to sometimes give way to yawning and scratching urself. A jack russel would have demolished the dachshund, taken the chew and bounced off the wall with it ten minutes ago... This is slow and deliberate, just stating displeasure with the situation . I have one of each and this is why i love the Basset.

I heard Basset Hounds are stinky...is that true? I know all dogs smell at some point but some breeds smell more than others...for example I had a Cocker Spaniel and she was stinky most of the times even if we bathed her...it seems to be an issue among Cockers. So...I heard Basset Hounds had the same problem..is it true?

The hilarious thing is my friend has four dogs, a basset hound, a cocker spaniel, and two other dogs and the basset hound and the cocker spaniel are the ones with noticeable odor.

@fairycristela that probably comes from problems with their ears. If you don't keep their ears very clean, the ears will start to smell. If you clean them once a week with a good product from the vet, you should have no problem with smell. I use T8 nKeto ear flush, which is a topical antibacterial and antifunglal agent, I purchased it at my vet's. Take care of their ears and give them regular baths and bassets don't have any odor problems. I have had them since the 80's.

My best friend has a 9 year old tricolored Basset Hound named Ferb. He weighs 65 lbs and is registered with the NAPDR. Ferb is a fanctastic dog. He is so loveable. I love Basset Hounds, especially Ferb. He loves raw chicken breast, legs, thighs, and duck breast!

Our Basset (my 4th) usually gets whatever he wants. If he wants to get in kennel occupied by our Labrador', he'll start whining or chatting, or he'll pretend he wants to play. If this doesn't work, he'll squeeze in beside her, work his way to the back of kennel, then unceremoniously push the Labbie out. Result: 1 Content Basset asleep in the kennel and 1 bewildered Labrador sitting on brick pavers wondering what on earth just happened.
