This dude is not giving good advice for ANY beginner. DO NOT count a groove or approach it the way this person does because it's WRONG. In a basic rock groove the snare is on the 2 & 4, Bass drum on 1 & 3. His bass pattern is 1& - 3&. The hi-hat is straight eighth notes 1& 2& 3& 4&

Not to mention that his setup is all kinds of jacked up. That setup would create all kinds of bad habits and create fatigue in one's playing.

1 bar / measure in 4/4 is counted 1&2&3&4& rather than 1234... so the bass drums land on 1 and 3, and the Snares on 2 and 4. Don't get me wrong... you're video is helpful, but you're not helping kids who're doing grades by not getting basic terminology right.

actually the hats are usually played in beats of 8th notes...like the kid below me said , hats are only used to keep the beat usualy and its kinda supposed to go:

1. hats-bass

2. hats

3. hats-snare

4. hats

5. hats-bass

so bass on 1, snare on 2, bass on 3 and on the 'and' of 3, and snare on 4 again...if that makes any sense...

Correct way to play this:

Beat 1: Bass drum and flam on the floor tom.

Beat 2: Bass drum and flam on the floor tom.

Beat 3: Flam triplet on the snare drum.

Playing the flams gives a delay effect, which the studio version has, but using foot stamps and claps. This is how to re create that sound live.
