Advice: If you are listening to this and someone asks what you are listening to. You say Steely Dan. If their response is who are they, well Justin Bieber this Lil Wayne that. Look at them and punch them in their face.
i swear no gets this guys tone right cept me! not even the the steely dan guitarist! by the way lead guitar on this track was played by studio guitarist elliot randall. his solo on this song was quote "my favorite solo of all time" - jimmy page
@AVEIL I'm afraid I'm not knowledgeable about the guitar playing. I guess what I mean is the harmony of the guitars sounds like two playing in cadence. One high, one low. Know what you mean about the dueling thing as in deliverance though I can't remember the name of the song either. That is amazing, just one guitar?
The 69-75 was an interestng ear b/c lots of experimenting w/studio mix using conv instruments and some synthesizer. When CBAThrill...I was 15.It finally dawned on me that this was a special period-only the Beatles had gone full studio up to that pt. Steely was master at this, their music v.original, amazing mixing. Elton John early as well. Listen to the mix of Tiny Dancer- all the instruments, awesome in the true sense of the word. Steely-like every one of their songs on the albs were solid.
@autodrafters There are no dueling guitars, the session guitarist is simply playing the lead in harmony. "Dueling" is like what you hear on that song from Deliverance, where you have a kind of question & answer scenario going on w/ the banjos. Can't remember the name of that song. But the lead on this song IS amazing--I've been playing for a long time,& it's a tricky guitar part; it's not that technical, it's just played so well, w/ so many articulation techniques & weird timing at parts..
one of my favorite leads and runs of all time....melodic...if i ever take guitar lessons again I will pay the instructor to teach me this lead and then i will die happy !
@AVEIL Interestingly, almost the entire song (save for the verse/keyboard part) is played with just 2 chords-G & A. But instead of switching between the 2 keys, the solo is in the key of D. If you know why this works, then you have a good understanding of music theory. People have mistakingly said some of these runs are in G, but there's the C# note disproving that. The key of G has only 1 accidental, F#. BTW, the hardest part of this song is playing the keyboard part on guitar.
No other band in the history of popular music so effectively melded Rock and Blues phrasing into jazz structures so effectively , Their arranging skills are peerless , and for all its subtle complexities and virtuostic performances , the music has raw heart and soul and grooves hard , every song these two fuckers wrote was unforgettable....They have always been simultaneously behind the times and ahead of them ,an aural playground of their own ..and dont get me started on their lyrics .lol

This music is tied to the emotions of the times we lived thru...those of us who were in our teens in the 70's. It was the most uplifting carefree and magical time for those of us who experienced those years. This music brings it all back.
You cant talk down about a whole generation, everyone listens to what music they find is good whether it be C-Rap, Metal, Classic Rock, Country, and so on. Just be yourself quit judging people based on their generation.
LOL, I am a DNA deficient spermatozoa ready to swim up the canal and I Like this song....I started listening to this band when i was a mix of proteins and enzymes and carbohydrate sugars..My other friends who are also sperm cells are silly cause they listen to Justin Biebers proteins (he doesnt have any sperm cells yet) favorite songs...they do seem to like rap....maybe there is a musical connection (or lack of it)
I used to have to listen to this song every day at my retail job. It was not only the reason I quit but also the reason I almost set the place on fire. This shit is beyond awful.
In 1972, I drove across the country from Seattle to Atlanta, to Chicago, then back to Seattle. It was in a good riding 1964 Dodge Polara 500 with a 383 cid V8. This song was my companion throughout the trip, even as someone road shotgun from Atlanta to Chicago with me. I looked for it everywhere on AM, turning the knob on the radio until I found it again and again. I couldn't get enough of that song! Nothing's changed. I liked it then, I like it now! (Oh...this is music, not a video).
I herd this song on the radio and it was so amazing to hear an amazing song instea dof that gay rap and hip hop shit they overplay now a days!!! Thumbs up for this amazing song!!!

@ExtendedancEPlay It makes me feel good that kids listen to GREAT classic rock. I'm 55 years old and I grew up listening to this type of music and still enjoying it today ! If you haven't listened to Mahogany Rush yet, play 'Land of a thousand nights' and crank it up very loud ! It will blow your mind !
@ExtendedancEPlay you are a genious i am 15 too and i cant stand the ignorant attitude of some people who just dismiss the music i like because it is old or diferent to the current trend.
@TheNickelKnocker keep it cool. im glad kids are listeningto good music from the yester years. what kind of example are you setting son. let those who appreciate do so, especially when it comes to our children. peace
@TheNickelKnocker .....I think it cool that they do that...and the music they make today has the production value of disposable lighters.....And dude last time I checked they don't care what you are Sick of seeing
@TheNickelKnocker Well aren't you cool? How about you leave the 15 or 16 year olds alone to enjoy their final years as children before they grow up to be grumpy old fools like you...
I was their when this music came out and I loved it. This music is the real deal and hearing it never gets old. Thank you Steely Dan for being true to your craft!!! Reeling in the years is the best.
Yes i agree with you kaychikybabexo .. no one in the charts can make great music lkie this anymore and its about time it ended and someone boot this rubbish they call music out of the charts.
@kaychikybabexo i'm 15 years old and i listen to steely dan, Tears for Fears, Level 42 all that sort of stuff.. to me, the garbage that is on the music channel these days is just auto-tuned, drum machined, chavy slutty shit! i don't even class it as music because if you hand one of those people an instrument i bet they can't even play a note.. THAT'S NOT MUSIC! Anyone else agree?!
@samzz00zz Listen to Ronnie Van Zant of LYNYRD SKYNYRD fame of the 60s and 70s anything prior to the plane crash of oct. 20th 1977. Just give them a listen.
@samzz00zz The ironic thing is, on almost every classic rock song on youtube there are comments like this. So obviously a lot of young people like a broad range of music. (myself included) although I do like some current music as well.
@samzz00zz alright dude i get it im 14 and i totally agree with you but really... you dont have to proclaim it to the world, people get it... we love this music too not just older people. it will live on trust me
@samzz00zz Join the club buddy. I'm 15 as well and also agree with you 100%. Our generation that even listens and likes this music isn't that big, but I'm proud to be a part of it.
@samzz00zz Learn to appreciate the music that we have today. You just aren't looking hard enough. When you are as old as your father is now, you will hear the music that will be playing 20 years from now and look back on how much better the music is today.
@cheeseman369 This was a complicated post, but I think I agree... people keep seem to come up with awesome stuff... but it seems to get harder and harder to get distinguished without compromise...
@samzz00zz Yah man I know what you're saying. I'm 4 and no one in my preschool appreciates the greats like Steely Dan and Pink Floyd. They all like that Wheels on the Bus and Itsy Bitsy Spider bullshit.
@samzz00zz To an extent, the radio sucks, but there is still alot of good music out there. You just have to have an open mind for the sound of it. I listen to this, classical, metal, heavier metal, tribal, and all sorts of other stuff.
@samzz00zz We wouldn't be listening to this if we didn't like it and agree. But, no one cares that your 15 and you listen to old music ok. Pass it on.
You are pretty much on the money there Sunshine. I am glad at your age you know how to separate the chaff from the good stuff. Much of the great music of the past is being copied, remixed, and sold as the latest thing. Cheers
@samzz00zz not really,ur just being immature and stereotyping all music to be that genre.Listen to some of the proper rappers, the messages they get across are amazing.
A little traveling music, maestro.

Wow... I Heard this song when I was like.. 5. At 14, I didn't think I still knew the words.
FanOfRandomThings099 4 months ago
I heard that the solo in this song is Jimmy Page's favorite guitar solo. :)

I'm 5 years old but I say this:
The shmo who produced this LP should have been fired for cutting such a great guitar riff off way to soon. Even Justin Beaver agrees.

good music is timeless... lot of young teens think if its old then its not good.
kaychikybabexo 5 months ago 3
@kaychikybabexo i'm 15 years old and i listen to steely dan, Tears for Fears, Level 42 all that sort of stuff.. to me, the garbage that is on the music channel these days is just auto-tuned, drum machined, chavy slutty shit! i don't even class it as music because if you hand one of those people an instrument i bet they can't even play a note.. THAT'S NOT MUSIC! Anyone else agree?!

@samzz00zz The ironic thing is, on almost every classic rock song on youtube there are comments like this. So obviously a lot of young people like a broad range of music. (myself included) although I do like some current music as well.
Gumblej6ck 4 months ago
@samzz00zz alright dude i get it im 14 and i totally agree with you but really... you dont have to proclaim it to the world, people get it... we love this music too not just older people. it will live on trust me

@samzz00zz Join the club buddy. I'm 15 as well and also agree with you 100%. Our generation that even listens and likes this music isn't that big, but I'm proud to be a part of it.

@samzz00zz I listen to steely dan and pink floyd etc as well but you have to learn to appreciate other ppls music choices or likes don't be a faggot
MeshMovies 3 months ago
@samzz00zz Learn to appreciate the music that we have today. You just aren't looking hard enough. When you are as old as your father is now, you will hear the music that will be playing 20 years from now and look back on how much better the music is today.

@samzz00zz To an extent, the radio sucks, but there is still alot of good music out there. You just have to have an open mind for the sound of it. I listen to this, classical, metal, heavier metal, tribal, and all sorts of other stuff.
GoodaBuddha420 3 months ago
@samzz00zz We wouldn't be listening to this if we didn't like it and agree. But, no one cares that your 15 and you listen to old music ok. Pass it on.

You are pretty much on the money there Sunshine. I am glad at your age you know how to separate the chaff from the good stuff. Much of the great music of the past is being copied, remixed, and sold as the latest thing. Cheers
