  • School's potluck here I come!

  • thanks for doing that my mom made it and it was yummy!

  • Love this so much but every time i cook this my neighbors say it stinks. Instead of cooking it i just microwave it and mix w/ white radish. And ahhhhh....taste like heaven but still stinks my whole house....lol

  • Thank you! it's very helpful, and you make it easy to understand!

  • anyong haseyo maanchi thank you for uploading everytime you cook and have a request::) it really help:)

  • Hi Maangchi, with this dish, can I use the original syrup that I eat with pancake to substitute for corn syrup? Thanks a lot

  • @jaden191brown That sounds good to me! Happy cooking!

  • Hey. Thank you for this. I'm guessing you could use lots of different flavours. It look like the oil, water and sugar are the basic ingredients and then I think I can experiment from there.

  • do you have to eat this right away to keep the texture?

  • <3 So delicious, every time my friend come with me to eat Korean food they always like omg you eat that I say yes very good, try you might like. =] Some of them do.

  • Don't forget molasses .....and cayenne....garlic...etc..

  • what do i use to replace corn syrup if i don't have it? my dad loves this, thinking of doing it for him =)

  • @thiscrazymonkey You can replace it with honey. If you use honey, use less because honey is sweeter than corn syrup. Or skip it and use only sugar.

  • I'm curious, when eating the small anchovies as a snack right out of the bag, do people eat the whole thing or also remove the intestines and head? I'm thinking about buying some and I imagine that they'll be a good snack but me and intestines xD I don't know.

  • @Ominee Eat the whole thing.

  • @Ominee I think you can try to find dried anchovies that already clean at the market.

  • This was a great demonstration! But lose the background Alicia Keys music.

  • Can I eat dried anchovies like how Americans eat potato chips?

  • in malaysia, the anchovy is a bit salty,

so,my mom wash it before cooking . it is the same in korea?

can i wash it or it is supposed to be dry?

  • @saraazman129 no never wash dried anchovies. Skip soy sauce or use less hot pepper paste in the recipe. Check out the recipe on my website.

  • @saraazman129

Yes, Malaysia anchovy is far saltier than the korean anchovy. What i normally do is, wash and rinse the anchovy two to four times depends how salty the anchovy is, then sun them till very dry. Then you just follow the recipe and you will get very nice result! Try it out!!!!

  • I got all the ingredients to make this!!! I'm really excited! When i was in Korea it was my favorite! It's still my favorite :)

  • i don't need the recipe!!! just send me your cook by mail :D :D

  • i just fried this but mine became so hard afterwards!! like rock solid. its like the brown sugar crystalised after it cooled down.. : is it supposed to be like that??;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

  • @michyc08 use less sugar or corn syrup next time you make it again.

  • @Maangchi thank youuu :) i love ur videoss!! i coked the spinach and tofu side dishes and it tasted great! keep posting :D

  • Reminds me of 오징어제 무침.

  • I loooove canned anchovies but I hate the little bones. Is there any way to possibly remove them? They sting my tongue when I eat them.

  • i dont have corn syrup,,what else can i use to substitute that?? thanks

  • @immortalz3113 sugar or honey?

  • Ohhh so these are anchovies. I feel so stupid lol. I've heard of anchovies and I've been eating them for all my life but I never knew they are the anchovies. I never really wondered how those fishes were called in english. I just enjoyed eating them and only knew them in my language. XD

  • @BakaFai lol, cute!

  • Hi Maangchi!, it´s being a long time since i watched your first videos and you have a lot more now and the side dishes i ever wondered how to cook them, it´s fantastic!, i was making them on an empirical way and i was very close on many of them but the spinachs and the egg plants were a total mistery how to make it look soft without over cooking them, thanks a lot for creating this channel!.

  • @manonpiano : ) thank you very much! egg plant side dish is very delicious, right? That's my favorite!

  • i love anchovies. Fried anchovies are great for snacks

  • Most people complain about anchovies being to salty & to oily, because they are canned in salt and oil. Here is what you do. Take them out of the can and put them in a cup of milk, over night. The next day, rinse them off and pat them dry. Then you have a tasty, smoky fish pieces. That taste good on pizza or salads, without the ove powering salt / oil taste.

  • I love anchovies, I just got done eating a can of them lol......they go great on a triscuit, or a bagel crisp, or just straight from the can.

  • umm i was wondering if there was a easy stock i could use the big anchovys for.

like simmering the anchovys first and then take it out and add vegetables? would that work?

    thank you =]

  • @YenSturr yes, it's a perfect way to make good anchovy stock!

  • @Maangchi , oh okay thank you very much

  • great vid. i make anchovie and kelp tsukudani at my site that is pretty good.

  • I wonder why we don't need to wash them. Are they cleaned before they sold ?

  • @L3S3R4 yes, they are clean. Don't worry.

  • @Maangchi Thanks. I have bought a big box last week from H Mart. I will make some and give to my friends. I really enjoy these fishes and other side dishes. Thank you very much for posting them.

  • Hi, I wonder why we don't wash the fishes first, were they cooked and dried before they are sold ? If not, only cook for 1 minute, are they really well done ?

  • how long can you keep them in the fridge?

  • @rhumball you can keep it in the fridge up to 1 week.

  • is there a healthier option instead of using corn syrup?

  • can i left this over night??

  • Yummm....

  • Do I have to wash the fishes first ?

  • @L3S3R4 no, you don't have to wash them. Check the written recipe on my website please.

  • Thank you very much, I am cooking them now.

  • thanks for the great recipe, already try this recipe and it turn out great ^_^ although i reduce the sugar a 'lil bit coz i don't like sweet flavor, but it's still taste great XD once again thanks U for the recipe

  • @kinanti Thank you for using my recipe. Cheers!

  • wow im glad i stumble upon your site and youtube, thanx for sharing the recipe's Maangchi, perhaps now I dont have to travel all the way to the city to eat korean food now =)

  • Maangchi, why is it that korean cuisine has so many side dishes?! Is it compulsory?!

  • in the philippines we just fry it in oil and dipped in soysauce or vinegar.

  • i love anchovies

    korean food rocks

  • hi.... first of all i just want to tell you that i love your videos :) but my real purpose writing to you is that i was wondering if you knew how to make pork belly.... i don't know exactly how it is but based on korean dramas the pork belly are often eaten with soju.... if you do know then would you make a video on that... thanks... keep up the great job...

  • hmm, pork belly on Korean dramas, I think you saw them eating "samgyupsal gui". Check my grilled beef recipe. You could replace the beef with sliced pork belly. Is that what you are talking about?

  • I wish I knew if there was a korean market in seattle washington. Then I could make all of these delicious korean dishes.

  • I posted the list of grocery stores in Seattle on my website. Check "where do you buy your Korean ingredients" section on the forum on my website.

  • Maangchi you are truly a life saver. You are such a good cook and a really nice. I would love to meet you one day.

  • Try Super H Mart. One in Lynnwood and one in Federal Way. Tons of oriental foods including Korean.

  • thank you!:D

  • instead of corn syrup ,can u use honey?=]

  • yes, you can!

  • many people do not like anchovy.

  • haha, Thanks a lot!

  • Would you be able to provide us with a recipe on how to make 마늘쫑 고추장 무침?

  • sure, I will include it in the list of my upcoming cooking videos.

  • Hi Maangchi

I made this dish today using the small anchovy. A lot easier. No need to remove parts ! My parents love it. I wonder if you will consider posting a video for potato pancake, gamja jeon. I have tried making it with a recipe I found on net but it didn't taste like the ones in restaurant.

  • potato pancake, sure, thanks,

  • I am now missing home cooking. Thank you for your wonderful videos.

  • thank you!

  • I was in the korean section at the asian supermarket and I saw tons of dried anchovies, I thought of you :) I didn't buy any though because I am a vegetarian

  • lol, dried anchovies reminded you of me!

  • YUM!!!!!!

  • if we dont have corn syrup, we just add another tbsp or sugar?

  • I would add 1/2 tbs sugar and 1 ts water because sugar is sweeter than corn syrup.

  • So delicious!! I'm Japanese, but I LOVE LOVE LOVE Korean panchan! I have a lot of extra dried anchovy and I'm going to make this right now - and extra spicy! :-) Kamsahamnida!!

  • haha, you are welcome!

  • i love all your cuisines, i visit always your website when i want to eat korean food. thanks for sharing your recipes :-)

  • Thank you!

  • With the large anchovy, does head and intestines have to be removed? Can head actually be eaten??

  • Check out my Tofu Stew video where I show how to clean dried anchovies. Thanks

  • hmm. my family and i always just eat it straight. it may seem weird to some people. but its so small that it really makes no difference if you have the head on or not. the bones are way too small plus everything else is too insignificant to remove anything.

  • where'd you go?! ;)

  • I like it...where can I get the red pepper paste...what is it...would it be easy to make??? Do you think this recipe cld work with fresh sprats(the little white fish with black eyes)??? And once again, good cooking from a great cook...can't wait for another bite...thankyou...Steven:)

  • I don't think it is a good idea of cooking this recipe with the fresh sparts . Dried fish will work. Hot pepper paste is sold at a Korean grocery store. Check out my ingredient blog. Thanks

  • oh also hey Maangchi hammer down :) heres another idea how bout you give us your recipie for fish cakes the dreied korean style kind....also i have masive fish access here in Alaska and would be interested in how to make the dried cakes if you know how?

  • haha,

you must have seen my cold noodles video where i used my hammer. : )

I don't know how to make fish cake as it is, but I can cook fish cake side dish. I will post it later.

  • wow maangchi is really a world traveler!

  • maangchi! i absolutely love all of your videos. i'm really wondering how to make jjajangmyun. do you know how to?

  • Have you tried substituting corn syrup with honey? Do you think it would work?

  • No, I have never used honey for this dish, but I think it will be ok. Use less amount than the amount of corn syrup in the recipe.(about half)

  • noooooo never use the honey it will give it a tase of flowers and nuttyyness u can use cooking syrp, but thats unhealthy. i strongly recomend a korean molasess called yut in korean you usualy get it at any korean market

  • they both look delicious! Can you make kong goo soo? I think it's a white soybean noodle dish served cold. PLEEEEASE!!!!! I'm really craving it but I have no one to cook for me and the restaurants don't have them!!!! :( :( :(

oh, and the side dishes look yummy!

  • Kamsa hamnida, Maangchi! I really love this side dish... specially when it's extra spicy!

    Thanks again for sharing!

    yours,

    Tony Sunsaengnim

  • Hi, Tony,

    You are very welcome!

  • Maangchi.. I try this out and it taste great, however; my fishes seem to be really sticky. I've bought this side dish at the store and the fishes does stick together like mine, so can you tell me what I did wrong, thanks!!!

  • corn syrup makes it sticky and shiny. Next time you make this, use less corn syrup or sugar.

When you keep this in the refrigerator, it will get harder due to cold temperature. I usually take it out from the refrigerator 1 hour before eating it.

  • is it just me?or the video's kinda blur this time?anyway, thank you for the video, love it.

  • You are right. It looks blurry. Youtube makes it blurry. : (

  • if it's blurry, just click on the "watch in standard quality' option underneath the number of views.

  • I'm definitely going to make this. It looks so tasty.

Wow. Your pan is so clean and scratch-free. I wish mine looked like that.

I love your cooking show, Maangchi! Keep up the awesome work! :3

  • Thank you Rosalae! This recipe is very simple and easy, right?

  • if i can't find the corn syrup can i use sugar?

  • yes,you can use only sugar.

  • Thanks for this video.. I really like this side dish..

  • I'm glad to heat tha!

  • Thanx you so much!! i've always wondered how to make this!! Luv ur recipes! i'm spending more time in my kitchen again!! LOL

Just wondering...there is this seaweed/kelp side dish(my daughter's favorite at the korean restaurant) is that on ur list of up n coming recipes??

  • Check out my website and find Seaplant soup (Miyuk Guk) recipe. I posted written recipe there. If it's not what you are interested in learning, let me know with more detailed description about the food. Thanks

  • I love your cooking... KAI

  • Thank you, KAI, your cooking skill is great, too!

  • can you please show us how to make 양념통닭?

닭강정 is very delicious too but I love 양념통닭, but its hard to make that consistency with the sauce and spicy-ness.

  • sure, yang nyum tong dak is included in the list of my future cooking videos. Thank you!

  • yummy

oh and i love that song :)

  • Thanks! : )

  • i love you

  • Background music - Alicia Keys - No One

    very nice, me likey!

  • yayee!

  • I'm from Vietnam and I remember my mom made this. She did not say it was Korean, lol.

We also can eat this with plain rice congee in the morning or during cold days. The shiny oil is really tasty so we must not waste that.

  • : ) Another person left a comment that it will go with congee (porridge). Nice,

  • OO sometimes i dont like eating these because if they're too hard it like pokes my mouth :(. also how do u use metal chop sticks?! I'm like the only person in my family who cant use them, they're so hard to use! they're heaving and soo tiny :'(.

  • whatever you say, I understand you because I can put myself into your position. metal chopsticks are very good. lol, are they poking your mouth? chew them carefully then.

  • Should the dried anchovies be washed first?

  • haha, cute!

No need to wash, it's clean.

  • Again, another great dish! Thank you

  • Thanks!

  • at a korean restaurant near my house, they give you these anchovies plain along with kimchi, dried squid, and some turnips as a starter, i think its called banchan

  • yes, banchan is side dish in korean. Thanks

  • ^^ Looks very yummy~~~ hmm~~~~ Your anchovy side dishes bring me the memory of a school lunch box. Oops I miss my mom. ㅠ.ㅠ Thanks for a good video. Have a good day~~

  • right, it is number one favorite side dish for school lunch box in Korea. Call your mom if you miss her. : )

  • Maangchi, you're amazing!...you actually answer EVERY comment! Very sweet of you.
