  • Ah si je pouvais, je vous donne des compliments pour chaque chanson, mais je le fais une fois pour toutes! vraiment, vraiment merveilleux!

(Je m'excuse pour mon français) buona giornata

  • @LeSymposie

    Merci beaucoup ;-)

    Valéry

  • hi, ive listened to a few of your videos and love the renaissance music. I also have a question if you wouldnt mind, im 15 years old and i was interested in playing either the lute or guitar, but i didnt know if the lute was extremely harder to play. so what would you recomend?

  • @Marostega99

Do you mean lute / renaissance guitar, or lute / classical guitar ?

Lute is not so much harder than classical guitar, juste you have to get used to double strings.

Renaissance guitar is easyer, but repertoire is quite small regarding to the lute or the classical gutiar.

    Good luck !

    Val

  • @Luthval ,

in refference to you question about the renaissance guitar or the classical guitar, is there a huge difference? and thank you very much

  • @Marostega99

Yes, there is a lot of diferences, the renaissance guitar is much smaller, with four double strings. Probably easyer to play, but the repertoire for this instrument is very small. It is interesting to play it as a second instrument, but not a principal one. The first should be the lute (if you prefer the repertoire of this time) or the classical guitar, that is a general purpose instrument for all periods.

  • angelic

  • hey i have 2 qustions. what scale (or mode) did you often play here(it sounds like deorian) and also do ou "harmonize" with the fourth ? (in the bass)

  • @yootesa1515

I do not harmonize, I just play what was written by Le Roy. I think the piece is in C key.

  • @yootesa1515 That is a good question. It is common for 'resolving' a minor progression with a Major V chord. This produces a good leading scale of the 'melodic minor' which has only the flatted 3rd as opposed to the dorian (3b, 6b). I like to consider the 'minors' as just alterations on the aeolian(natural minor). The old rule of thumb, way back in the day lol, it was said that the melodic minor was for ascention and the aeolian was for descention to get clean 'resoluion' and no invoke demons!

  • this awesome!! what tuning is this?

  • @Guitarbro221

GCEA (same as ukulele ;-) you can play renaissance guitar music on ukulele if you want ! try it it's fun !

    Val

  • Hello Val we meet again ;-) Every time I search for certain 16th century pieces I find your channel and wonderful playing. This time I simply typed in Renaissance guitar and here I am listening once more. Thank you for uploading so much great music. My best wishes to you, Mary

    V.

    Val

  • Subscribed!

  • Thanks a lot ;-)

    Val

  • brilliant

  • Thanks a lot ;-)

    Val

  • What book do you play from? I'm looking for some renaissance guitar books.

  • The Chanterelle edition of Le Roy books is out of print now. A few modern typing are avalaible on some lute sites.

Look for used books ? perhaps with luck...

    Val

  • @GutterColin You can download for free Adrian Leroy original tabs on Alain Veylit Django's website "musickhandmade".

  • Thanks (I'm a django user too ;-)

    Val

  • Beautiful !!!!

  • Thanks

    Val

  • pure merveille , merci.

  • Merci beaucoup ;-)

    Val

  • It rains here on Saturdays in the Muskoka region of Ontario Canada! Short and honey sweet - beautiful playing, Luthval! Your garden looks beautiful.

  • It was beautiful in june... in october it is not so nice..;

    V.

  • Where do you get your music from??? I looked all around and cant find this song anywhere

  • It is in the fac simile book by chanterelle edition (now out of print) You can find some modern tabs on lute sites (make a search for lute society or subscribe to a lute list as the one by Wayne Cripps)

    Good luck

    Val

  • nice playing and beautiful garden,

wonder if it can be played on ukulele

  • Yes, of course it can ! (renaissance guitar is tuned the same, here low g but could be high g too)

    V.

  • hey val how would i be able to reproduce the sound of the ren guitar on my classical

  • Impossible... your classical doesn't have double strings. try a tenor double strings ukulele ?

    ;-))))

    Val

  • ive been trying to play this by ear, but cant quite get it! especially all the emelishments, i dont suppose you could post the chord progression? thanks

  • great !!!

  • Thanks ;-)

    Val

  • Glorious playing and lovely garden! I always find that the acoustics in the garden are very good, especially for my classical guitar. I've favourited the video - wonderful. :)

One question though, what tuning do you use for the instrument?

    Thanks,

    Jamie

  • About tuning, put a capo on 5th fret, and with the 4 treble strings of the guitar you'll have the ren. guitar tuning... ;-)

    Val

  • No remix... Original sounds always better... no erzatz !

    V.

  • I love this type of music but i dont have a clue where to start with it. I have heard so little.

  • Have a look on the net on "Lute society" you'll find some infos on early instruments, makers, teachers, scores...

    Good luck

    !

    Val

  • I will, thankyou.

  • Great playing, and the sound or acoustics outside sound so good!

  • Thanks ;-)

Instrument is very good (and the mics too !)

    V.

  • Val, you inspired us to upload a nice vihuela or guitar video outdoor too. Very, very nice !

Scuse me, I wonder what's that black thing, right in front of you, on the table?

    Greetings from Mexico City !

  • This is a guitar, not a vihuela (4 courses here) and the black thing is a piece of rosewood, used to turn pegs when too hard for tuning.

    ;-)

    Regards

    Val

  • Thanks for asking maestro!

I mentioned a vihuela or guitar because a friend of mine (mixcoquense), upload vihuela video recently. I noticed your are playing a renaissance guitar, by the way, it's beautiful !

    Thanks again.

  • I hope to order soon a vihuela and play again all spanish repertoire on it ;-)

    Val

  • I can hardly wait to hear you playing the vihuela !!!!

    :) :=)

  • what is the tuning of the guitar?

  • GCEA (bass to treble) Octave string on the G course, outside or inside as you wish)

    V. ;-)

  • thanks

  • You play so beautifully - I've been interested in playing renaissance guitar and lute for our local SCA chapter, but finding appropriate (and good) written music has been difficult. I'll definitely have to look for this one :)

  • playing such music outside is so beautiful, greatly done!

  • That's beautiful playing. Now I would like to try a renaissance style guitar.

  • Look for Carlos Gonzales, luthier in spain.. he is making very nice student renaissance guitars... (less expensive than mine...)

    ;-)

    Val

  • Great. That's a "Rockin'" tune. Nice outdoor scenery too. Were you playing to your flowers? I heard good music makes them grow better.

    --Van

  • Love the setting as well as the music!

  • Gorgioso! Al fresco is a nice touch, too.

  • Wonderful work!

  • Thanks a lot

    Val

  • Thanks, I have played Blues all my life, but due to you and PO Kindgren AndanteLargo, I've found the best guitarists and it made me start all over again, playing classics. Not like you, but for fun,and I give it a try !

    Peace and take care.

    Urban

  • really glad to read this message from you, and honored to be besides PEO in your intention.

Good luck and have fun !

    VAl

  • Particularly beautiful.

  • This piece is really nice, isn't it

The first I played on renaissance guitar.

    Val

    Thanks

    Val

    KEN

    Val

  • Luthval, your playing is magnificent; thank you so much for sharing your videos with us!

  • Quel cadre enchanteur qui va bien avec la si belle musique !

    Merci, "Syre" Val !

  • Hello.

You play it very well! it really made me go back to that renaissance era!!!

i have my renaissance double strung harp! now preparing some tunes to post, plus some more with the clarsach....

    thanks!

  • Oh, I'm waiting to hear this new instrument !

    ;-)

    Val

  • It's wonderful, does the Renaissance renaissance-gitaar have 6 strings?

    Beautiful background, location and garden!

  • no 3 double and one single string...

    ;-)

    Val

  • That guitar has such a sweet and smooth sound - thanks for posting your videos they are fantastic.

  • Thanks a lot

    ;-)

    Val

  • Wonderful music, I love this instrument. A question, was it played like that(right hand position) back then? so it's like lute playing? can it also be played like a classical guitar right hand position?

  • Hello,

easyer with lute position, was also used for strumming... classical guitar position is only from the middle of the XIX century, not before.

    ;-)

    V.

  • Belle musique dans un jolie jardin!!!

  • Merci beaucoup. C'est agréable de jouer dehors mais pour enregistrer c'est difficile (voitures, peu mais quelques unes, mais surtout des tracteurs... les joies de la campagne...)

    Val ;-)

  • I've been a subscriber for a while and always enjoy your videos, but especially now the new videos with this beautiful guitar. Very nice, I'll be trying to play this tune myself!

I think your guitar is tuned like a ukulele (GCEA)? But there seem to be more pegs (can't make out how many), which strings are in courses? Thanks.

  • In fact seven strings (eight pegs, one not used...) the first is single.

    ;-)

    Best regards

    Val

  • Yes, I noticed that in the presentation video. I'm looking forward to more videos with this wonderful piece of art.

  • Never mind, I just watched your presentation video of this instrument. You must have uploaded a few videos shortly after eachother, that's why I missed it. It's absolutely beautiful!

  • grate my frind

    adil

  • Thanks a lot Adil, always a pleasure to read you and to know you're taking your precious time to listen.

    All the best,

    Valéry

    Salut Ernst,

    Valéry

  • magnifique ! l'interprétation , le jardin ,

et cette guitare (" Made in France" LOL )!

    j'adore ! merci Val !

  • Musique Parisienne, jardin du Poitou, guitare fabriquée dans la Drôme (soyons chauvins, mais pas trop, le luthier est Australien, ne l'oublions pas... ;-)

    Amicalement

    Valéry

  • interesting how the original, arranged version varies from the folk version taught me - repertory piece as opposed to boozy ballad. thank you val!

  • Hello bill ;-)

There are so many differents tourdions... Is the folk version the same ? or the one by Attaingnant (most famous on the song quand je bois du vin clairet...)

    Val

  • i learn something every day ... i thought there were many, variable arrangements of an original song - as published by attaingnat.

    grazie maestro!

  • Well Tourdion is the name of a dance, many time you can find this form at the end of a suite with bassa danza, recoupe, and tourdion. So even in Attaingnant thre are many tourdion on different tunes.

    V ;-)

  • music, directly from the paradise ;-))) -thank you - another 5,5 stars and warmest greatings from Berlin - Siegfried (and Dorothea, now also you your fan)

  • Hello Sigfried and Dorothea ! hope you are doing beautiful music with cello and theorbo. (I would like to listen and see you playing on YT !)

    All the best,

    Val
