all those who argue which is better please stop. if you can use it fine. if you can't then it's not for you period.
i have xp, osx, slack and obsd at home and i dont have any issues using them.
when i want to play i use xp, when i design websites i like osx's feel much better, slack for perl/python code, obsd protects my home network and serves the movies.
so if i were you don't confine yourself to one thing. be good at different things. and have fun.
Linux is a replacement for Windows its good but u need to pick the right one.. ( Slackware ) is the one that is closest to Unix like, and its based directly to the Linux Kernel without modification witch make him damn fucking fast...
For BSD, the Kernel is the most advance one i have eva seen, and the fastest BSD-OS is NetBSD and OpenBSD have fun!!
IMHO it's way better than Linux. But I only tested OpenBSD so far.. There are lots of guys out there using OpenBSD as Desktop system - try it out - it's definitely worth it! :)
That what I love about openbsd. I have used it from 2.6 to 4.8, the installer has not changed.

@orgthingy, sure it is not better than Linux, it is BEST.

If you want UNIX, you can't go wrong with BSD since it *is* UNIX and is directly derived from it. Linux was written as a clone.
